Good luck on your upcoming surgery TJ. I was a surgical icu RN for 17 years
before changing professions. Kiddo, I have seen it all. This surgery is
major surgery, no doubt.....but I have seen people die from having their
gallbladders removed, while watching an open heart surgical patient recover
and go home after lying in an icu bed for 4 months with an external heart
pump keeping him alive after surgery for the first 2 weeks. He also became
septic, had his kidneys shut down, coded, but made it home and survived.
This surgery has the potential for complications and even death, but
the risks are MUCH higher by staying morbidly obese. One death for every 200
are fair to goods odds when one compares the morbidity, misery, and general
health deterioration of those of us who remain obese.
My surgery is an open (my choice) RNY on 5 Feb 03. I can't wait,
and I don't care what price the future bills me. Take care all you brave
and wise people.
Frank
Thank you luv. Stay in touch.

Hi Susan,
I read this entire site. The fact that Sherrie isn't very forthcoming
with her surgery details and from the descriptions of what she has
been eating, I'm not surprised that she has the problems she is
having. She is obviously vitamin deficient as well as protein
deficient. I don't think that she received good support and follow
up, and I feel bad for her, I hope her life improves.
As for the horror stories that are listed there. It seems that many
of them come from Fresno, CA. It wouldn't surprise me if they were
all done by the same group of doctors that stopped doing WLS. I
realize that there are risks in having this surgery and there are
probably many more horror stories out there (the statistics say that
there are). I am aware of the risk and I am willing to take it to
change my life. I didn't see anything on the site that I haven't
heard from the 3 lists that I read. The only difference is that
wlssideeffects.com is presenting them in a shocking almost tabloid
fashion. I have also seen sites that paint WLS as a quick fix and an
easy out for the obese. As far as I have seen this is not accurate
either. Yes, we are changing our problems around, exchanging our co-
morbidities for nutritional challenges and possible medical
complications, but it is a decision that should be made only by the
well informed.
I have investigated everything that I can about this surgery, and I
understand that there are going to be risks and changes to my life. I
am willing to accept these, but my decision is one that is being made
from an educated perspective. I hope everyone out there thinking
about having the surgery investigates as much as they can, looking at
the good and bad.
Best of luck to everyone!
Take Care,
TJ

Thanks Frank,
One of the things that really has given me encouragement is that
there are so many people in the medical field, who have a much better
idea of what they will go through, who are condidering or have had
the surgery.
Best of luck with your surgery,
TJ
