Sleep Study

2008-05-31 15:10:42

Hello, I am new to the group and have found a lot of useful information from all of your posts. I am in the process of getting all my appointments ready so that I can get a surgery date. I have a question I would like to see if someone can help me with. I have had my initial visit with the surgeon, my psych eval, cleared by my PCP, and my support group meeting. When I had my visit the first of this week the scheduler - Debra (?) at Dr. Schmitts office said she would probably have everything to send to the Insurance company by Wed. to seek approval. Then wed morning I had my visit with Dr. Kim Schmitt. She is going to send me for a sleep study. My appt is not until April 5th. Can any one tell me about how long this will push things back for me? Before I had my last appt I was hoping to have my surgery in late April or so. Now it looks like it will be a lot longer. Especially if I do have to go on CPap. Does anyone know if they still send you in for Insurance approval or if
they will wait until I have cleared the sleep study? Sorry this is so long. Thanks for any help, Jane

Hello Everyone...Here is my Question
I met with Dr Schmitt on Feb 11, 2004. he told me that I had gained
about 9 lbs since July 2003 he wanted me to lose weight before the
surgery. At first he said 5-6 lbs then it was 9-10 and then 15-20.
Ainxce 02/11/04 I have lost 7 lbs and 10 inches (went to be measured
and weighed last night at the gym). Becasue I have n't lost more I
am freaking out that he is not going to do the surgery on Tuesday.
Maybe I am just nervous, I have waited for so long and it is finally
happening I am weirding myself out I don't know. Could someone
PLEASE help!

Support Group Meeting Info

2008-05-31 01:01:18

Hey friends,
Just to let everyone know that the "Blue Awning" entrance that most
of you come in when you come to the support group meeting is now
closed. This is because of construction. It's going to be closed
for about 18 months. YIKES!
The best thing to do is to come in the main entrance and use the
elevators that are immediately to your right to come up to the 2nd
floor.
I know this is an inconvenience but we'll all get used to it. AND -
when the construction is done we'll have a BEAUTIFUL new Bariatric
Center!!
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Love,

On the List!!!

2008-05-30 19:54:58

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the group and I must say right off the bat, this group is wonderful. I've gotten so much helpful information from everyone and I can't wait to truly be a part of the group. I haven't got a surgery date just yet. I finished my psychological evaluation yesterday and thank God I passed it. [INLINE] That was my last thing to complete. I called Dr. Miles office and the lady told me she would put me on the list. I'm not sure exactly what list that is. Can anyone explain what happens now? Thanks again for all the stories and wonderful information.

I feel sick

2008-05-30 08:49:31

I'm nearly 6 weeks post-op and doing well. I would like to know
if anyone has had a problem with throwing up. I was worried about
stomal stenosis and called Dr. Schmitt's office. When asked if I was
taking my Pepcid regularly I had to admit that I wasn't. It's been 4
days that I've been back on Pepcid and am doing much better. I've
thrown up twice. Is this something to expect on occasion? Am I
eating too fast? It seems as if I try to eat something 'new' I
throw up. One day I eat something and do OK. The next time I eat
the same thing I throw up.
Thanks,
Flo

AWESOME NEWS!!!

2008-05-29 10:08:55

Hi guys! First of I wanted to say Thank You to everyone who kept my
Mom and I in your thoughts and prayers over the last two weeks. Also
thank you to all of you who either posted on here or emailed me
privately and wished her well. She is home and is recovering well.
She is of course having to take baby steps and let nature take it's
course on healing her but you would never know she had open heart
surgery just over a week ago now. And for those of you who have asked-
yes of course she will be at the next support group meeting!
On to another note: While in the crisis of last week I forgot to post
that I received insurance approval for my first plastic surgery which
is for the panniculectomy. I decided to pay for the abdominoplasty
(tummy tuck) and just have it all done together. Well this week I
scheduled it for 4/14!!! I am so excited! I decided to wait this long
because of a couple of events going on before hand (2nd World's Most
Amazing Yard Sale and the EHF Gala that is a fundraiser for the
bariatric department at MCE) and also because by then my Mom should
be fully recovered.
So I just wanted to share the exciting news with you guys!!!

Prayers

2008-05-28 16:08:24

To Everyone ,
Thank you so much for all your prayers.. This has been the HARDEST 2 1/2 days of my LIFE..... Getting the news on Tues.. and then going straight to B'ham on Weds.. Shew.. This is all so shocking .. Gonna have surgery very soon.. Dont have a date yet.. This is not the surgery I had planned... :( Ya see I was going to try and have some more surgery with Dr. Eich (Plastic) in March ... But as you see God planned it a Lil different... So I guess the skin on my stomach will have to wait....
I'm sorry I'm just lost for words.. Please know that I really do APPRECIATE all of your prayers.. PLease keep them coming.. :)
Love to all of you,
Kristy Brooks

Prayers Needed and Requested Please......

2008-05-28 08:13:44

Many of you know Kristy Brooks. She is a dear friend of Lisa and I, and many of you as well... Kristy had WLS about 2 years ago as has done an awesome job of losing well in excess of 200 pounds.

Kristy has been experiencing extremely bad headaches recently, as well as significant hearing loss in her right ear. Not knowing the cause of either of the problems, she went to her family doctor who ordered a CT scan as well as an MRI. The test results revealed that Kristy has a tumor on her brain that is about the size of an egg. The tumor is pressing on the brain stem, causing the headaches, and has also compromised the auditory nerve, which has resulted in approximately 75% hearing loss in her right ear.

As I type this e-mail, Kristy is being seen by a specialist in Birmingham to further evaluate the course of treatment. The tumor will be surgically removed ASAP. The doctors feel confident that she will do well with the surgery, however, the hearing loss in her right ear is very likely to be permanent, and there is a chance for some facial paralysis on her right side.

Kristy asked me to share this with the group and for you all to please keep her and her family in your prayers... As always, she is more concerned about them than her, that's just Kristy... She is a trooper and she has said she can handle it, but please do keep her in your prayers.

Thanks in advance to you all...

Wes

Stomach Pain

2008-05-28 03:01:55

Do any of you have stomach pain after lying down for a few hours. I
usually have to get up a few times during the night. Just standing
for a few minutes helps. Is it just the weight of all that skin?

Sad

2008-05-28 02:17:04

Hello all. I am doing good. I have lost a total of 59 pounds. The
reason for the post is I have experienced some hurtful things. First
of all, the things that are being said are coming from someone close
to my family (mother-in-law & her boyfriend). Well for starters,
they say I am going to look like an old hound dog after I get all
the weight off, (because of the droopy skin) and the all the time
call me names, this has all just started. I am very hurt from it.
She weighs 230 lbs , so I am thinking maybe its jealousy?! I dont
want her to be jealous of me, I just want to fit in. She dosent say
it when my hubby is around, they wait till I am home alone or they
will call me so he cant hear it. I wish they would except me for the
decision I made (WLS). I think there is more to it but I cant figure
it out, unless she just hates me. That is so sad. I am always good
to her and her boyfriend and I have always been a shoulder to cry on
while she is going through her divorce. My mom seems to think maybe
her boyfriend has said something good about me and maybe she got
jealous, whatever the reason, I just need her support. I am not a
bad person, just a fat one. She was nice to me until I had the
surgery. But anyhow, Thanks for reading.

Off Topic- Family related post : )

2008-05-27 05:35:39

Hi guys! I need to first say please forgive me for not letting you
know something was going on while this was happening. It was at my
Mom's request that no one know and that she have ZERO visitors. And
honestly, I don't think I could have handled seeing anyone either. I
seemed to do okay as long as I had to stand strong for her and no one
asked me how I was doing. Hey I can admit now that I was scared to
death and ready to bust into tears at any given moment.
Anyway- my Mom (Jill- who is normally selling protein at the
meetings) had a heart attack on Monday 02/02/04). We spent some time
in the E.R. and then they did a heart cath and discovered she had
100% blockage in the L.A.D. artery which is the main artery in the
heart. They tried 5 times to do a stent or angioplasty and were
unsuccessful. She had to have emergency bypass surgery at 1:00pm on
Tuesday (02/03/04). She only had to have one bypass and they were
able to use a vein from her chest so they did not have to bother her
legs or her arms. To say it has been very stressful for both Mom and
I is an understatement because as most of you know we are the only
family we have.
My Mom's sister Jody flew in from Florida and that helped me quite a
bit as she has been with me or stayed with Mom at night and let me
come home to attempt to get some sleep. I must also say that I would
have NEVER survived last week- especially Monday- without Rona and
Wade. PLEASE PLEASE do not be mad or upset with either of them for
not telling anyone. Like I said it was at my Mom's request that no
one knew and under the circumstances I was doing everything in my
power to keep her happy and stress free.
An update on the situation: Her surgeon released her to come home on
Friday (02/06/04) which is like 2-3 days ahead of normal open heart
patients- but again she is WAY younger than the normal patient as
well. She is doing okay overall- just very sore of course and I think
it might finally be starting to catch up with all of us.
So- please just keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Amanda

How much is 2-3 ounces?

2008-05-27 00:41:56

I know that sounds like a really stupid question. Is that weight or
fluid ounces? I feel like I'm able to eat too much and I'm only a
little over a week post-op! Is a whole single-serve cup of
applesauce too much? I've been trying to go by the 3 spoonsful
thing, but I'm afraid I might be using my old, skewed, pre-op
definition of a spoonful. I typically eat 1/4 - 1/2 cup of food at
at time, depending on what it is. More of things like applesauce or
cheerios, less of things like mashed potatoes or pasta. For
example, I couldn't finish the KFC mashed potatoes at one time. I
did finish an order of Pintos and Cheese (over the course of about
an hour) - and that made me feel too full and uncomfortable, though
I didn't get sick.
Am I just being paranoid?
Thanks!
Laurie

post-op

2008-05-26 18:13:10

Hello all,
Monday will be my 3rd week post-op. I am doing much better now. I
have recovered from the dehydration and the infection of my drain
site is getting much better. I guess I will be Dr. Miles personal
poster child...When he says you have to drink alot after
surgery...He really meant it. So for all of you Pre-op people, I am
here to tell you, DRINK, Just Do it. I thought it was felt like I
was getting alot of air when I drank so I just kept putting it off.
Well, boy did I mess my self up. Spent another 2 nights in the
hospital. But I am much better now and PROPEL(drink) is my new best
friend. I learned the hard way.
Good news, I did lose 20 lbs my first week post, I have to go back
to see Dr. Miles again Wednesday and I feel like I have lost a good
bit more. We'll see.

resentment

2008-05-25 20:27:43

Hi everyone,
I guess I need to post this for a little moral support. Even though I knew this would happen from listening to other people in our group, I am totally and unbelievably amazed that there are people in this world who will resent you because you are losing weight. Folks, I have lost almost 90 pounds and I have two co-workers (both overweight) who will not even speak to me. It doesn't exactly hurt my feelings - I am just amazed. I know you have to take the bad along with the good and for those two people who don't speak, there are so many others who do speak and do notice how much I have lost. So I don't dwell on those two but like I said, I am just amazed.

Thanks for letting me share.

water and taking pills

2008-05-25 01:03:29

Kimberly,

What type of water are you drinking? I could only drink Desani for about the first 2-3 months. I am almost 6 months out now and I can drink anything now. I can even take pills without gagging (I thought that was going to last forever). The frustrating feeling you get when you eat and drink, or take pills goes away around the 3rd month. I feel really normal now and this is my way of life. Hope this helps. Amy

Please respond and let me know what further steps you took.

World's Most Amazing Plus Size Yard Sale

2008-05-24 08:05:46

Dear World's Most Amazing Plus Size Yard Sale Vendors and Buyers,
A very unexpected error on the books at the Trussville Community
Center has made it necessary to reschedule our much awaited 2nd
World's Most Amazing Plus Size Yard Sale. Please accept our sincere
apologies if this causes any of you inconvenience. We're trying to
look at this delay as an opportunity to make the sale bigger and
better than ever.
The new date of the yard sale is April 3rd. It will be held at
the Trussville Community Center which is located on Clay Chalkville
Road in Trussville. We are very excited about holding the sale at
the community center for several reasons. It will be wonderful to
have the sale indoors which will protect us from heat, cold, rain,
cold, etc. There are also clean restrooms and electricity. Further,
if it happens to rain on sale day we can still expect a good turnout
because weather will not be a factor.
Our first sale was held outdoors and John Kosie was generous
enough to allow us to use his property at no charge. We are having
to pay for the two rooms at the Trussville Community Center which
will result in booth prices being $15.00 instead of the $10.00 we
charged at the first sale. It is our hope that this very small price
increase will cover the expenses of renting the facility. Spaces are
10 feet long and will accomodate a regular size folding table. You
may purchase more than one space but must have a minimum of 15 pieces
of plus size clothing for sale per space. You are welcome to use
racks and card tables if this would work better for you. Regular
size folding tables will be available for a very nominal rental
charge and can be rented for use in spaces on a first come first
served basis. You are certainly welcome to use your own tables. At
the end of the day you will donate 10% of your sales and receive a
tax deductible receipt for your space fee and for your 10% donation.
It's a wonderful way to sell your clothes, buy others and enable our
support group to fund our goodie bag program, social events and other
benevolent causes.
In addition to selling plus size clothing you are welcome to sell
household items, collectibles, regular size clothing, baby clothing
and other baby items, DVDs, CDs and small electronics. Due to size
limitations it will not be feasible to sell furniture or large
appliances. Just remember - you must have a minimum of 15 pieces of
plus size clothing per space. All items for sale should be clean and
in good condition. You will price your own items and collect your
own money. It will also be necessary for you to bring your own
change as change will not be available at the community center.
We are attempting to develop a clothing donation program for the
obese who are needy during the holidays. After the sale, if you
would like to donate any unsold clothing items to this program you
may do so. You will be given a tax deductible receipt for this
donation as well. Ideally the donated clothing will be divided by
sizes and boxed. During the holidays we will contact radio and
television stations and try to arrange for the clothing to be given
to the needy. As I'm sure you all know, it's almost impossible to
get plus size clothing at a reasonable price so having a program like
this would certainly be a community service. We're going into this
program with little to know idea of how to accomplish this goal but
still believing we'll be able to help people. In addition to this -
we will arrange for a Hannah Home truck to be at the community center
at the end of the sale in the event you do not want to take your
unsold items home.
The community center opens at 8:00 for setup and the sale is from
9:00 to 3:00. You will need to be setup and ready to sell at 9:00.
We're looking forward to a successful sale. Our last sale had
$6000.00 plus in sales. We will be advertising on all television
stations, all local radio stations and in the Birmingham News and
Post Herald. We hope you'll participate. Please contact Amanda
Sawyer at MandiKS@aol to reserve your booth and for information on
remitting your space fee.
Thanks,
Amanda Sawyer, Jill Cole, Rona Scott and Wade Scott

Return to Work

Got a question. I have a desk job. Would it be realistic to hope
and plan to be back at the office after a week? I can go

they would help/do anything that would be too strenuous for me.

Hey RONA!!!!!

2008-05-23 03:40:08

Hello Rona,
Just wanted to know when we would be recieving any info
about the April Gala!! I'm so excited!!!! Will it be black tie only
for the men???? My husband will be my guest, and he is not sure about
the Tux! thing. I know it is 3 months away but you can never plan to
early. Also wanted to know if anyone has had or ever had any problems
with their back hurting after surgery? I know i have some hanging
skin back there, and my breast are realy saggy with hanging skin all
the way from them on the sides to the back, My doctor says it could
be my gall bladder manifesting itself by projecting/radiating the to
my back and shoulders. I was wondering if anyone else has had this
problem???? LOL Denise Williams 361/175/goal 165. Dr. Miles

Dr. Schmitt Patients

2008-05-22 21:09:54

Hi there again.
After a patient has finished all the stuff they are responsible for, how far out
is
a surgery date? I have no idea how far out Dr. Schmitt is in surgery
appointments and I would love to give my employer (and my 500 clients) a
little heads up so that they can prepare for my absence.
Can anyone give me any info? What was your experience?
Any info would be appreciated!

WLS Tea Party.... NEED YOUR INPUT EVERYONE!

2008-05-22 13:30:03

I've been talking with Rona about having a WLS "Tea Party" so we can
all get to know each other better. Saturday when we had pictures
made, I really enjoyed the time getting to know everyone while we all
had to WAIT (forever... lol) on our "glamour shots". I thought a tea
party would be a great way to get with each other and be more than a
face with WLS stats.
We had a tea party at church a few years ago and it was great. Of
course we won't be having any religious devotions like the one at
church, but it will be WLS oriented and a great way to get to know
each other better.
We are thinking either the 1st or 2nd SATURDAY in MAY around 2PM. We
are asking for $5 a person to pay for the tea, sugar free cookies and
door prizes. To help with decorating, we would like people to
decorated a table for a contest... best table wins whatever cute door
prize we can find that is tea party related. Now... it will be
BYOP... Bring Your Own PROTEIN. :)
This would be a dressy thing... sunday dress and if you have a frilly
hat or something, that would just add to it. I'm not a hat person
myself, so I can understand if anyone doesn't want to wear a hat.
SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm trying to get a count of who all might be
interested in doing this before we go out and start buying stuff. You
can either post on here or email me at lori@... and let me know
if you would like to attend. If we can get at least 20 people, then
it would be worth it. More would be better.
So, let me know what you think!!!!!
THANKS RONA for supporting my idea!!!
Lori

WLS Tea Party.... NEED YOUR INPUT EVERYONE! - For the MEN :)

2008-05-22 12:34:11

Norm, you will just have to get on the ball with that dress. I don't
want to see it dragging the ground getting dirty and all. Well,
depending on how short the skirt gets depends on whether or not you
need to shave. Now if you don't mind having your hair legs showing
underneath, go right ahead and come wooly. :) I won't be touching
them anyway... LOL
OK... MEN, Let's say dress pants and dress shirt... suits would be
too stuffy and uncomfy... please no blue jeans or cuts offs with
holey t-shirts. :)I didn't mean to leave out the men... we would like
to get to you all of you, too. If you want to come to a tea party
that will be great!!!! You still need to wear a frilly hat... for
posterity... LOL unless you has for permission to not have to wear
one. Then we will think about it. :)
I hope a LOT of people... men and women will attend!
So, Norm, do I count you in?
THANKS!!

Gallbladder problems

2008-05-21 14:18:25

Dear Rona and Wade,

I'm about 9 months post-op and have begun to have some problems. Around November I started with gallstones and had to have emergency gall bladder surgery. That went fine and now I'm having problems with my liver. My liver enzymes # is still high and I had to have more blood work done. There is talk of steatohepititis. Is this a problem of wls? I looked it up at the mayo clinic and it lists gastric bypass as one of problems. I'm getting a little worried or second guessing this surgery. Is there anyone out there, that might have had the same problems or can give me some advice?? Thanks for any help, Rosie in Huntsville

Hello

2008-05-21 12:07:45

Hiya everyone. How is everyone doing? Well I am alot better since I
went back to the doctor. Come to find out (about the vomiting) my
opening to my pouch was closed, so I had to go in Monday and have it
stretched. By the way Rona, you have such a wonderful hubby. He came
in and gave me some juice. But anyhow, sorry I missed the meeting. I
was so relieved to get to eat a bite!! The doc said I would probably
have to come back for another stretcher! I feel so much better now.
Good luck to all the pre-ops and post-ops. God bless.

And away we go!

2008-05-21 07:38:06

Well folks, I am on the way . . . sorta!
I am still waiting for Dr. Pennington's office to schedule a
Powerpoint presentation for Feb. and I am "pre-existing" until April
anyway.
-BUT-
My wife says I sound like boiling water when I snore. I knew that I
would have to have a sleep study performed anyway, so I went ahead
and began with that. I am going to Dr. Doekel's office on 2-17. I
doubt this is the actual sleep study date, as my appt is at 9:30 AM...
Well, I checked the American Sleep Apnea Assoc. and they
say "cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency,
and headaches" can be attributed to apnea. That sounds like my
autobiography. My PCP says that they may put me on a CPAP, or may
not depending on severity.
Anyway, one test is on its way.

my big realization

2008-05-21 04:48:13

Hi everyone,
I was at the meeting Saturday and even after having heard the
words "Weight loss surgery is a tool" since I began this journey last
July, it was like I was hearing them for the first time. Thank you
Rona for saying exactly what I needed to hear. I realized that I had
made this about seeing how much I COULD eat comfortably instead of
how much I COULD NOT eat comfortably. And I can't explain it but
this realization has made a 100% change in how I feel. For the first
time since surgery, I understand now. I may fall off this wagon
tomorrow but today I am in control. And for the first time since my
surgery I am getting in my protein and not even having to force
myself to do it. I don't think about it, I just do it. I went
through months of "I can't tolerate it, it upsets my stomach". And
in all fairness, it did. But I started forcing as much as I could
and now I have no problems with it. I have been
walking a mile everyday on my lunch hour, I have cut back my food to
just what I need. I wasn't cheating before, I stayed well within the
guidelines of what I was supposed to have; I was just eating too
much. All of a sudden it is like a light switch clicked in my brain
and I realize how incredible this is. I had taken it so much for
granted until Rona said how many people there are in this country who
want and need this surgery but for whatever reasons are unable to
have it. I have never felt so lucky and priviledged to be a part of
something and it is totally overwhelming.
Sorry this has gotten lengthy but when I stand up at group I usually
get out my surgery date and weight loss and that is about it. I am
PAINFULLY shy in large groups of people. Do okay with two or three
but that is my max.
Thank you all so much, especially Rona who always knows just what to
say!

Vitamin dosage and schedule

2008-05-20 11:59:57

Does anyone have a schedule for which vitamins we need to take and
when? My surgery is on 1/30 and I'm trying to make sure that I have
everything ready at home before then. I know we need a chewable
vitamin (check - Flintstones with calcium), calcium citrate (check -
got that at the support group meeting Saturday), B-12 drops (check),
and I think that's it. What I'm not sure of is how much to take of
regular vitamins and calcium citrate.
Thanks!

WLS on Strong Medicine (Lifetime)

2008-05-19 20:13:07

I watch Strong Medicine every Sunday night on Lifetime. Tonight,
two patients (A husband/wife pair) decided to proceed with WLS, with
the wife going first. They had complications (something about the
blood vessels making it more difficult) but she survived surgery.
Once back in her room, the doc came back in and they went over the
usual points...eat often, but not much, the sizes (football to egg)
that fatty foods and sugars have to be avoided, regular exercise
routine...all that. They had her eating mashed potatoes and boiled
chicken in the hospital, though. That didnt seem very accurate to
what has been shared with me so far. Then when they released her,
the two went to the movies where she proceeded to eat like she used
to...so of course, they then rushed her back to the ER. All in all,
it wasnt totally bashing. I thought I would share. Night to all of
you!!

Hi all

Congrats on all the weight loss everyone....Wolfie - good job with that demon.
:-)
Tina - I know what you mean about postpoining. I was supposed to have done all
my visits this week except Dr. Schmitt...then I wrecked my car and, you guessed
it, every penny of Dr. money had to go to fix the car. Now I go at the end of
Feb for everything and Dr. Schmitt mid March. Im so excited. I hope your sleep
study goes well.
Rona - Im looking forward to hearing you speak. Everytime I hear you speak or
read your posts, it reminds me of why I'm doing this.....FOR ME!!!! ( Wow -
just getting to the point that I can say that is an accomplishment!) Big hugs
to all of you and we'll see everyone Saturday!

The Steel Demon of Terror and my century mark...

2008-05-17 12:17:22

Well well here I am again with the latest news. I overcame the aqua blue steel demon. I took it out one day last week and rode it and broke its spirit. I got on it again yesterday to make sure it knew who was the boss. I got astride that two wheeled reign of terror and sped off. The wind was blowing my little bit of hair and my lips were peeled back from the high impact of speed that kept rising against my teeth and it was on. It tried so hard to throw me off but I held on. Daring it to try and get cute! I braved the odds of me falling off and ripping skin and won the war this time! The only thing is that my legs are so out of shape that the left knee wants to buckle on me when I get off. So the now docile machine of speed also aids me in supporting myself so the steps leading back up into the house don't swallow me up! lol Bad steps bad steps!!!!! I was truly glad to overcome this thing and be able to ride again. And for the second bit of news...as of today I lost a total
of 100 pounds. Now weighing in at 249. It was quite an emotional rush for me to realize that I had truly lost 100 pounds now. I still can't believe it! Thanks to Rudy who gave me some pointers that worked out great and much to my advantage for the long haul and maintaining the weight loss. Thanks Rudy! It is so nice to go and buy jeans and not have to worry if they will fit or not. And to go into a store and buy a blouse that I don't have to worry about the big ole belly showing and so much smaller now. I just love it! So I am now heading for my goal of 200 then after I reach that one I will go for the next goal of 150. That is where I want to stop, hopefully I will be able to maintain at that goal. I thought I had done well yesterday when I got up and weighed and had lost three pounds after sitting still for a while, then today I weighed and had lost another five pounds. Makes me wonder...where does the weight go? lol. Just away is all I know but no matter what I love it!
Thanks for letting me spread my good news. Hugs to you all! God Bless and Skinny Wishes!

Saturday's Support Group Meeting

2008-05-17 09:21:05

Hi Folks,
For those of you in the Birmingham area our F.A.C.E.S. of WLS support
group meeting is Saturday at 3:00. Over the last few weeks I have
learned that one of the biggest areas that is neglected in
preoperative education is what to expect long term. Because of this,
I have put together a presentation entitled Getting Back On Track. I
hope it will be helpful for those of you who can attend. I also hope
we have some good interaction from the audience. I think the meeting
has the potential for being helpful and educational for all of us.
I'd love for you to be there.
Love,

Freaking out about pre-op visit

2008-05-17 04:57:15

I have my pre-op testing tomorrow and I'm completely freaked out
about it. Mainly because of the 20 pounds that Dr. Miles told me to
lose, along with the phrase "if you come in here and you've lost only
18 or 19, I'll cancel your surgery". According to my home scale
this morning, I've lost 23, but what if my scale is wrong? Anyone
who's ever weighed over 300 knows how inaccurate bathroom scales can
be at that weight. Still, that's what I've been using from the
beginning, and it's been steadily going down as I've dieted.
I'm tempted to take my bathroom scale with me just in case to prove
what it says. I've worked so hard to lose that 20 pounds and I'm
terrified that it won't be enough. I'm afraid to eat anything for
fear of gaining an ounce.
Have any of you had pre-op visits with Dr. Miles where you had to
lose weight and just missed or were cutting it very close? How did
it go? Will he really cancel my surgery if his scale doesn't match
mine?

plateaus

2008-05-16 23:16:30

Hi everyone,
So how long do these blasted plateaus usually last??? I am about 4
1/2 months post op, have lost 71 pounds, and have completely hit a
brick wall the last month or so. I thought it had finally ended and
that I had lost a little but went to my doc's office today and the
scales haven't budged. Do they usually last this long? I am trying
to be patient and reasonable about it and take it in stride as just
part of the process but it surely is getting frustrating.
Can't wait to see you all Saturday!

FMLA paperwork question

Hi guys, I have a question. I'm filling out Family and Medical

2008-05-15 17:16:48

Did anyone have cyatic nerve problems after surgery? I am

Also, cold beverages seem to really take a toll on my new pouch (3
days out)...is this common? Should I stick to hot or warm liquids
and/or foods?
Thanks for any replies:)

having bowel problems that are getting worse. So I called the office
today and they want me in the office Monday. She said I shouldnt be
vomiting like I have been doing. Please dont think I have been over
loading myself on food, cause its NOT possible. I cant even eat 1
cracker without being sick and vomiting. The lady I talked to said
it could be an ulcer (please god let it be). But anyhow, I dont mean
to scare anyone. Everyone is different. I dont understand why I
vomit. Good luck to all you pre-ops. God bless

Hi and Questions

2008-05-14 16:01:51

First of all I want to say hello to everyone. I'm Stephanie and pre-
op currently 285 lbs. I was kinda bummed because we had to delay
things because of non-WLS reasons, but only by 6 weeks... Anyways...
here are my two questions:
1) I like to be very prepared, and since I'm single, this means
making sure my mother, who will be visiting when I have this done,
has all the necessary documentation just in case something were to
go wrong. We have had a medical directive (aka living will), final
will, and power of attorney drawn up. Which of these documents will
need to be in my file with Dr. Schmitt and at the hospital, and who
do I give them to?
2) Also, when I shared with a few friends what I had decided to do,
most were supportive. Two, however, constantly remind me of every
case that goes wrong...every person who wishes they hadnt done it
and choose to share these thoughts through the media. Both of these
two are very healthy...both are solid muscle and have less than 7%
body fat...and have always been like that, so obviously, they don't
understand this side of the fence. One has finally dropped the
issue...the other (who is an ARMY nurse, would be LPN if a
civillian) brings it up all the time. He asks what I eat and what
exercises I have done, then tells me to eat a little healthier and
exercise a little more and the weight will come off (like I havent
tried that a million times over the last 17 years). I've listened
to this for the last 6 weeks nonstop and its getting real old. Have
any of you dealt with this? How do I politely tell him to drop the
issue? I've done my research - I know the risks, the pros, the
cons, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I researched this for 2
years before even selecting a surgeon...now I'm ready to go..
Thanks so much to everyone for their input.
Stephanie

Questions...

2008-05-14 03:13:10

OK. am about 3 1/2 weeks post op...and have questions...

My 64 ounces of protein and water a day....is any protein that I eat
counted in that 64 ? or is that the amount I am supposed to be
supplementing and eating as a separate amount?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on late night eatting. I normally eat dinner around 7pm and since I am in college I am up late almost every night. Around 10pm I get a little munchie. Most times I just get something to drink and hurry through my work and go to bed. However, sometimes that does not work. so any tips would be very helpful.

Helpful Hint

2008-05-13 03:09:21

Hey All,
I bet 95% of you already know this but for those of you who
don't..... if you're looking for a delicious, easy, high protein,
zero carb, 60 calorie snack you can eat a whole package of Carl
Budding or probably any brand of that paper thin Chicken that you
find in the bologna department at the grocery store. The ham and the
beef have a bit of carbs but barely worth mentioning and very few
calories as well. I took the chicken and rolled it up into 4 chicken
rolls and just savored it. Sounds silly but it was so good and
filling. I can't believe I never thought of it before. Divide a
piece of cheese into four pieces and put it in the chicken roll and
you have an even yummier snack with more protein and only 130
calories and no carbs. DEEEEEEEELISH!
Happy Day!

Hi Sarah,
Sorry to hear that you're having a hard time missing food. That's
not that uncommon and the best place you can be is on this list and
at meetings in person. Are you exercising yet? You'll be amazed
that if you get active it will stop alot of the craving issues and
make you feel more satisfied overall. Sounds crazy doesn't it? But,
it really works. Are you supplementing your protein? That makes
your boyd physically happy and usually results in an improvement in
being emotionally happy.

90 lbs. in 7 months

2008-05-12 08:33:13

Just to let you all know, I am 59 years young and am in the best
health, mentally and physically I have been in in several years. I
had my gastric bypass on May 22, 2003 and have lost 90 lbs.
The Lord opened all the doors for me to have the surgery and sent me
to a wonderful doctor and staff. I use Dr. Schmitt at Medical Center
East. I could not have found any people that care about you than
this group of people.
I had to retire on Disability in May 2000. Since then I had gotten
where i could not walk, drive myself anywhere, or go around other
people because I was so unhappy with myself. I have been given a
SECOND CHANCE and am enjoying every minute.
I had to have my Gall Bladder removed December 15, 2003 and have done
excellent. I also went to the doctor New Years Eve and I have
shingles now, but with the Lord on my side I will conquer them. If
anyone is afraid of this surgery, don't be, it is a blessing for
those of us who reach the end and find this help.
Martha
Thanks Dr. Schmitt and all of your staff.

think I have finally quit losing and I am happy with my weight and

I am very content. My flabby stomach is a different story, but I am
hoping that will soon be taken care of with some exercise. I am

Recipes

Hello all. I hope everyone is doing good. I am doing better. I tell
you what, The first 3 weeks of this surgery is awful. I thought I
would never be so sad to give up my food, but let me tell ya, I have
cried, gotten mad at myself, and then wondered if I did the right
thing. But deep down I know I did the right thing. I weighed 326
pounds before surgery, and now I weigh 285 pounds. My goal is to get
down to 150 pounds. But anyhow, I am writing to find new recipes. I
tried one on the Faces website that a lady named Ann made, It was
awesome!! It was called Crunchy Baked Fish, ohhh it was good. If
anyone has any new recipes or any ideas, I would greatly appreciate
it. I would also like to see if anyone knows how to order or get and
issue of the wls magazine? Thanks alot and God Bless.

New Years Back on Track

2008-05-09 18:04:39

Hi Friends,
I was watching TV yesterday (WONDERFUL totally lazy day - so few and
far between) and I saw a commercial for Special K cereal. Frankly, I
was kind of dismayed when I saw it. They are advertising that you
can lose 6 pounds in one week by substituting a bowl of Special K for
breakfast and lunch. Sounds like Slimfast, huh? Here's the deal -
you can lose 6 pounds in a week by substituting a Hershey bar for
breakfast and lunch and eating a sensible dinner. Now, am I
suggesting you substitute Hershey bars for your breakfast and lunch?
No - what I'm trying to do is show how corporate america is jumping
on the money bandwagon when it comes to weight loss. The new Special
K program and the age old Slimfast program are both good "programs"
they're just selling very poor quality products to implement the
program. Special K and Slimfast programs have some success because
they are restrictive programs. By substituting Special K or Slimfast
you are restricting the amount of high sugar, high carb, low
nutritional value foods you are eating so you naturally lose weight.
As I said, you could do this with any food that's 250 calories or
less so you could substitute breakfast and lunch for an apple or a
banana or a bowl of soup or cereal, etc. How can we actually make
the program a success and defeat corporate america's exploitation of
the obese? Use a high quality protein supplement instead of poor
quality ones like Slimfast or Special K. You all know that we sell
protein supplements at our support group meetings but you can also
get good products at places like GNC as well as Gyms and Fitness
Centers. Remember that whey or cassienate proteins are the most
desireable and it shouldn't have more than 100 calories per 15 grams
of protein. Also be sure to check the carb and sugar content.
I read CNN every day and they have a quick vote poll they do every
day and I wish they would've had one asking "How many of you are
starting a diet on the 1st Monday following New Year's day?" I bet
there are millions of people starting diets on Monday, don't you? I
know Wade and I have resolved to eat healthier and exercise more.
We're not necessarily starting a diet but we are going to be more
mindful of what we're eating.
Wishing each and every one of you a healthy and prosperous new year!
Love,
Rona

Hey Wes and group...

Whatever happened with the bowling plans everyone was talking about at one time? For Christmas I got a customized bowling ball and bad and shoes and Im ready to bowl. I aint promising I won't throw a few gutter balls but I am willing and wanting to learn this game again and get started if possible. If nothing else come and watch. Did anyone ever get a WLS Bowling Group underway? I know Wes bowls. He called me from the bowling alley. I sure would like to know more about it. If not then I will plan a different route but I can't think of anyone I would rather bowl with than my WLS Family members. Love ya all....Jo Jo

I would just like to thank all of the people I have met here and can honestly say I have developed wonderful friendships with you all. You were there to pick me up when I needed it and to pat me on the back when I worked to do well. You ladies and gentlemen are all super people and I don't know what I would do without ya. I have come to rely so heavily on you all. In life GOD blesses us well I find that out more and more with each passing day. So many blessings...isn't he spectacularly AWESOME!

VH1 Promo

2008-05-09 02:58:02

Just wanted to give the group a heads up (especially you Rona). Saw
a promo for an upcoming show on VH1 calle Rock Bodies. What caught
my eye (and got my goat may I add) is the way the promo is worded.
It talks about celebrity bodies and how they have worked hard
or "cheated" to get them. When the announcer uses the
word "cheated" a picture of Carnie Wilson flashes on the screen. As
a soon-to-be RNY loser (Jan 15th--YAYYY!!) I happen to respect
Carnie Wilson for her openess about her experience.
Anyway, the show comes on Monday, Jan 5th. It will be interesting
to see the slant they put on RNY.
Much Love,
Yvonne

question

2008-05-08 15:01:58

Hello everyone, i hope you all are having a great Christmas and i pray that your New Year is just the way you want it to be. I was hoping that I could get a little a feedback from you all on a few issue I have been dealing with? First, for the past week or so when every I take my meds in the morning I feel as if it is not going down all the way. At least not for a few hours. The pills I take are very small about the size of a tic tac or smaller. There is no pain or major discomfort but I just don't want it to keep going without having any idea as to what may be happening. When I try to drink something after it (about 20-30Min's.) i feel as if i have to burp but can not and it seems to be affecting the way i eat. I feel hungry but I don't want to eat because I don't want to get sick or anything so I go as long as I can without eating or I wait until the feeling goes away. which is about an hour or two.

Second, i am 10 1/2 months out and I have lost 155lbs and I am concerned that my appetite has begun to increase. What is the normal rate for your appetite to increase? Up until my 9th month i was able to eat one cup of turkey chili or a third of a 6oz chicken breast and besatisfiedd for at least 6-7 hours. but now it is getting to the point that if i eat one cup of chili i am hungry again in 3-4 hours. and as far as eating solid meats like chicken i can eat 3oz and maybe a few bits of salad or some other side item.

I try to keep this all in prospective and remember that i am still not eating more then a three year old. but i still want to make sure that everything is going the way it should. it worries me when i see that i am able to eat more and more often. when i run my daily food intake through fit day i am getting around 650-700 calories a day.between 30-60 grams of protein,20-30 carbs and10-20 fats. and it also seems that my weight loss is slowing down.

any input will be appreciated

thank you

Latoya Clark

first plateau

2008-05-07 23:39:43

Hi everyone,
Well, I have hit my first serious plateau. I have lost only 5 pounds
in over three weeks. I am grateful for that 5 pounds and I have lost
a total of 67 since my surgery on August 28, but this plateau stuff
is for the birds!! I have eaten more, I have eaten less, I have
drank protein and water until I am floating so I guess I will just
have to ride it out.
Hope you all had a great holiday and I am looking forward to seeing
everyone in January.
Happy New Year!
Selina
