have my first appointment

2008-01-31 19:38:59

Hi everyone,
I have my appointment with Dr. Schmitt on July 2! I have all my
records from my Internal Medicine doctor to take with me as well as a
letter from him recommending I have the surgery. Hopefully this will
make the process smoother and quicker for Dr. Schmitt as well as
getting that approval from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Can't wait to
meet you all at the meeting in July (just can't get to the one
tomorrow.)
I keep having to pinch myself - can't believe this is actually
happening.
See you all soon!

I've attended two seminars and plan to attend the
support group Saturday. Can someone tell me which
classroom and can I enter the building on the left
side where the blue awning is? I've been coming in
the main lobby of the hospital and taking the elevator
to 2nd floor.
Also, I've seeing some emails where people are getting
appointments in July & August. I made mine a month
ago and my appointment is not until November. I've
been real anxious about waiting so long, afraid
something will happen to keep me from being able to
have the surgery. But maybe there's a reason for me
to wait longer.
It's good to read all the postings about everyone's
experiences. I hope to be a part of the group real
soon. Thanks!

YEAH!!! I got a DATE!!!!

2008-01-31 10:59:17

Dr. Groves' office called me this morning. It is set for July 2nd at
10:30 at Marshall Medical Center North (between Arab and
Guntersville).
Keep me in your thoughts and prayers!!

question about medications

2008-01-30 19:11:45

Hi all,
This will no doubt be the first of a lot of silly quesitons, but do
pills still work the same way after surgery? I take daily hormone
replacement therapy and Ambiens for insomnia (not weight related). I
will always have to take these two medications. How does the
medication get into your system?
Thanks!

Hi all,
I am new to the site. Went to Dr. Miles seminar last night (what a
character!) and have my first appointment with Dr. Schmitt on July 2.
I am so excited about this - can't wait to have this done and see
those pounds go away forever!
I am 46 years old and celebrated my third anniversary in February to
the greatest husband in the world. We have two dogs, a scottie and a
westie. I am human resource manager for an archaeological firm in
Tuscaloosa.
I have the same story as everyone else mostly. Struggled with weight
since 2nd grade, tried everything, lost and regained about 50,000
pounds. Ready to get it right this time!
Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. Will be seeing you all
soon!

After Surgery Issues Excessive skin

2008-01-30 00:11:05

Does anyone know after weight loss does Blue cross insurance pay for Cosmetic surgery for excessive skin?

I would appreciate anyone who has had this done response.

My One Year Anniversary!

2008-01-29 22:53:41

As my one year anniversary for my WLS approaches, it is hard to
believe something so wonderful has happened to a fat girl like me!
In eleven months I have lost 108 pounds and went from a size 22 to a
size 10. I am truly blessed and not inclined to believe otherwise.
Dr. Schmitt has helped me change my life in a way that is impossible
to describe. Well, maybe, for an example; crossing my legs is
something that I think about a lot--when I look down and see them
folded beneath me and I am, like, "Wow, I can cross my freaking
legs!" To some people that thought would not normally be a part of
their lives', but, to me, I am amazed...
Thank you to each and every person who answered my silly questions
from the beginning of my nervousness before surgery to the last time
I wondered if I was eating too much (I am). You guys can honestly
call yourselves a "support" group because so much has been learned by
so many people in this wonderful little group! Best wishes to all in
their WLS journey and I am more than happy to answer any "newbie"
questions or "longer-term post-op" questions...I feel pretty
qualified!

Protein

2008-01-29 15:00:31

A word near and dear to my heart now. I do have a question though- I
know Rona and both Dr. Miles & Dr. Schmitt say that you can not
absorb more than 30 grams of protein at a time. What is 'at a time'?
How long between should I wait to know that my body is absorbing it.
I was thinking about this today as I was opening the top on my
wonderful strawberry protein drink and now I am concerned I have not
been waiting long enough between cans to be absorbing the full amount
of protein.
Thanks guys and look forward to seeing you all at Saturday's meeting.
I am excited because it is time to weigh and measure again!!!

Nectar for $23.99!!!

2008-01-28 20:26:30

Can I just say how amazing this Nectar stuff is? It is DELICIOUS,
and for the first time, it is not a struggle to get in my 64 grams.
This summer I'm in grad school, and I can freeze one overnight and
have lunch and dinner ready in a matter of seconds. I'm not a big
pina colada fan so I haven't tried the Carribean Cooler, but I love
the Very Cherry Berry and the Apple Ecstacy.
Anyway,FYI, FitnessONE.com has it for $23.99. I placed an order for
six and received my package within THREE days! For those interested:

Sugery date is 6/20!

2008-01-28 11:58:09

Hi,
This is my first post. Just thought I would say "hi" to all you
fellow travelers of WLS. My surgery date is next Friday, June 20th
at Medical Center East with Dr. Miles. I am having so many mixed
emotions. Not so much about the surgery, though some there too, but
more about saying "goodbye" to the many ways food has been in my
life. I hope I am ready. I bid your prayers. I doubt I am alone in
these thougts...so I hope you can encourage me through this
transition. I had a co-worker I used to work with stop by where I
work now and I told her of my upcoming WLS and she looked shocked and
asked, "has God told you you could have that?!"
Well...I hope and believe I have His blessing....but that kind of
question hits me harder than any of them. I do pray His blessing
over our surgeons, nurses, and all who are pre and/or post-op!
Godspeed ya'll!

Alcohol

2008-01-28 05:13:02

Can someone give me some info about when we can start having a glass
of wine, etc? I'm not interested, or haven't really ever been, in
the fruity drinks, but would like to know when a beer, glass of wine,
a martini can be tolerated. AND does it effect you differently than
before?

QUESTION!!!

2008-01-28 02:12:15

Hello Everyone,
Let me start by saying that I went to Dr. Schmitt's office on
Tuesday for my staple removal and I have lost 15lbs. However, I now
have a question. I think this question came up once before but I
can't remember what the responses were. When I first came home from
the hospital, I was feeling like if I took 3 bites of food, I was
stuffed to capacity and couldn't eat anymore if I wanted to. Now
since maybe yesterday afternoon, I feel like I am somewhat satisfied
with the amount of food that I have eaten, but not as full as I was
right after I came home. I feel like I don't want to eat anymore,
but definitely not stuffed. Is this maybe because I had an excessive
amount of gas on my stomach or have I somehow managed to stretch out
my pouch? Also, is it possible that it has something to do with my
drainage tube being removed, because I feel a little different since
that was taken out...almost like I did pre-op...like I didn't even
have surgery. Thanks for listening and any input would be very
helpful and much appreciated. Oh the other thing was that I was not
even close to being able to consume the amount of liquids I should or
protein, but today I drank a whole shake and it was about a 6 - 8 oz
glass that I had it in. I sipped it but I couldn't do that when I
came home. God Bless!!

2008-01-27 06:30:23

2008-01-26 11:11:46

I saw the news clip last night with the one and only Wes last night
on the 10 o'clock news. How great is it to know that some of our own
(Rona, Chan and Wes) are getting the opportunity to help someone who
truly needs help? I think we should all give them a pat on the back!
Way to go guys!

YEAH!!! APPROVAL!!!! FINALLY!!!

2008-01-26 06:51:21

I got the call this morning! I've been approved!!! I thought it would
take longer because it took a while for them to even get the
paperwork. Dr. Grove's office faxed the info to BC&BS on April 25th.
I call around May 22nd to see how the process is going... well, it
can't go if they don't get the paperwork!! BC&BS said they didn't
have anything on me! So, Dr.'s office sent it again on the 23rd...
STILL DIDn't GET IT! Sent it a 3rd time to a representative I'd been
talking to and she made sure it got to medical review and she marked
it Priority... I just knew I'd be a month behind on everything since
they never got the paperwork back at the end of April. BUT it looks
like things may just work out so I'll have at least that month of no
lifting over 10 lbs done before the first day of school... teaching
preschool special ed... I DO A LOT OF LIFTING.
On Cloud 9!

IMPORTANT!!

2008-01-25 20:20:33

Hi All,
Just to let you know that Chan and I are going to be on the news tonight at
10:00 on Channel ABC 33/40. They are doing a story about a gentleman in Walker
County who weighs 900 pounds. He is not a patient of ours but they wanted some
information on surgical weight loss so they called and asked if they could stop
by and get some info. Chan happened to be here so they interviewed him too!
They interviewed us for 2 HOURS and said we could expect to be on camera for 15
seconds or so. ha ha ha ha ha Chan was awesome. I wish they would show his
whole interview. It was so touching - he was a rock star!!!!
Take care all!

Fwd: LAP-BAND VS GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

2008-01-25 07:02:19

I NEED SOME INFORMATION, I HAVE A FRIEND IN FLORIDA
WHOSE DOCTOR HAS SUGGESTED THE LAP-BAND SURGERY
INSTEAD OF THE GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY, MAINLY BECAUSE
SHE EXPRESS CONCERNS ABOUT THE BYPASS SURGERY BEING
IRREVERSIBLE AND ABOUT BEING OFF WORK. I TOLD HER I
DID NOT KNOW ANYONE WHO HAD USED THE LAP-BAND - HAVE
ANY OF YOU? I HAD MY SURGERY WITH DR. CHRISTOPHER AT
SHELBY AND HIS OFFICE DOES NOT RECCOMMEND THE LAP-BAND
PROCEDURE. I GOT SOME INFORMATION OFF THE INTERNET
BUT I WANT SOME PERSONAL INPUT FROM YOU ALL!! THANK YOU!!

Just got appointment

2008-01-25 00:45:00

I've attended a couple of the seminars and am really
excited. I attended one last year and let co-workers
talk me out of it. (I then tried one more attempt at
WW and lost a few lbs., and gained a few.) After
attending the meetings, I carry the information packet
around with me like it's the Bible. I've researched
on i-net and talked to several who have been through
the surgery already. I couldn't get an appointment
for initial evaluation until Nov. 10. I'm kind of
anxious about having to wait so long, but good things
come to those who wait. I plan to attend some of the
support group meetings in the meantime. Is there
anything else I should do while I'm waiting? I keep
hoping to get a call saying someone canceled and get
offered an earlier appointment (Dr. Schmitt). Not likely!

The CROSS

A young man was at the end of his rope, seeing no way out, he dropped to his knees in prayer
"Lord, I can't go on," he said. "I have too heavy a cross to bear."
The Lord replied, "My son, if you can't bear its weight, just place your cross inside this room.
Then, open that other door and pick out any cross you wish."
The man was filled with relief and said, "Thank you Lord," and he did as he was told.
Upon entering the other room, he saw many crosses; some so large the tops were not visible. Then, he spotted a tiny cross leaning against a far wall.
"I'd like that one, Lord," he whispered. The Lord replied, "My son, that is the cross you just brought in."

Funny how you can send a thousand "jokes" through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about passing it on.
Funny, isn't it, when you go to forward this message, how many on your buddy list will not receive it because you're not sure they believe in anything?

I've Got A Date!!!!

2008-01-24 19:13:12

Hello Everyone,
Drum Roll Please!!!! Dr. Schmidt's office called me yesterday
with a surgery date of June 2, 2003. Can you believe that! I was in
the support group on Monday really just thinking about all of the
people that were waiting for a surgery date and I was thinking that
it would probably be about the end of July before I got the surgery
and I was keeping my fingers crossed for that. Well, I guess it just
goes to show what prayer can do.
Anyway, you all please keep me in your prayers that everything
will go smoothly with no complications and I will see you all on the
other side. God Bless You.

2008-01-24 07:08:14

hello everyone, how are you doing? i am doing very well. i went to the doctor today and i have never been able to be weighed on their scale. but today i did it. and found out that i lost two more pounds since the last time i weighed. i am now 80lbs down in 3.5 mo. i also wore a pair of jeans that my mom bought for me two years ago. that i never could get in. they do not have any streach or elastic in them at all. i have never been able to that. i am so very happy right now. i also am going on my frist realy date with someone i really like and who really likes me. you know not because i am settling. i know we are going to have a great time. oh and also started doing low impact areobic the first time i did it for 23 min and the second day i did it for 30min. and i was not worn out for the rest of the day. i felt so good. i was not out of breath and was not hurting at all. it was great. well i think i have talked i enough. sometimes i think i could talk about this all day.
since there are so many things that happen to me everyday that totally suprise me. the things i can do and the way i feel after i do them. the way people treat me now is wonderfull. it makes me kinds sad to think that just 80lbs ago i was not worth talking to but now i am. since i am the same person now that i was then just a lot happier and a little smaller. but oh well. that is life and it is great to be on this side now living for the first time in 24 years. well everyone have a great day.

Feeling a little blue

2008-01-24 05:35:10

I feeling a little sad this evening, but it's nice to have a place
to "talk" through things with poeple who've been there.
Because I know my tendency to focus on the numbers, I don't even own
a scale. I promised myself that I would only weigh at meetings;
however, I'm cat sitting at my mom's where scales abound. Stupidly,
I stepped on to a scale and was disappointed by the results. I've
not lost as much as I would have hoped. I don't even know how
accurate these scales are, but I've allowed these stupid numbers to
get me down.
I am really trying to remind myself of the real reason I went through
with the surgery -- my health. These ten weeks since surgery, I've
had such energy borne from my awareness that I am doing something
profound to improve my life. How easily, though, I've managed to
lose that feeling. Okay, so what if I have hit a plateau? I've not
been doing all of the things I should be nutritionally or physically;
perhaps I can take this a lesson on the importance of taking
advantage of every moment of these first months post-op.

APPROVAL!!!!

2008-01-23 03:07:03

Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that I called BC&BS today and...
(Drum Roll Please)...I AM APPROVED!!!Yeah!!!YIPPEE!!! God is so
good. I have been trying to have this done for the last six years
and there seemed to always be some sort of stumbling block placed
before me, but I just thank God that he is more powerful and mighty
than we can even imagine. And He is faithful and just. He will
never leave us nor forsake us.
I am anxiously awaiting a date now. Debra is out of the office
until Monday which I think they meant Tuesday since Monday is a
holiday. Can anyone give any insight as to how long after you're
approved does it take before you actually have the surgery?
Also the lady in Mobile that posted, Debra sent my paperwork off
on May 1st and BC&BS approved it yesterday, May 20th. I've heard
that they have approved people in about 2 weeks, hence I was
beginning to worry, but I guess it just depends on how busy they are.
But good luck.
Take care everyone, I think I'm going to attend the meeting on
Monday so I hope to meet some of you all then. God Bless You.

PCOS help

2008-01-22 07:23:05

I am new to the group and am researching WLS. I have Poly-cystic
ovary disease, and insulin resistance. I am 230, 5'4". The
information I have uncovered about PCOS is that there is no cure, and
symptoms can only be "managed". One of the most disturbing symptoms
of course is weight gain, and the difficulty with loss due to insulin
resistance. Like many of you, I'm sure, I've gained and lost the
same 50 pounds at least 50 times. I would love to hear from anyone
else who suffers with this disease, and how the surgery has affected
their symptoms. Looking forward to hearing from you!

I'm a new member and all the info I've been reading on line is very
informative. I have been worried about being approved by blue cross/
blue shield, but it seems like more people are approved through them
than any other insurance. They also told me at Dr. Miles' office
everything looked good for being approved. They were suppose to mail
my papers today, can anyone let me know how long I can expect to wait
to here from BC/BS? I'm going to the meeting on Monday. I live near
Mobile but prefer to have my surgery done by Dr. Miles, I think it
will be worth the drive to have it done right!I hope you all will let
me know about all the "good" protien to eat out there. I think that
is the only thing I really worry about after the surgery is eating
the right food, and getting enough vitamins and protien.

Good Monday Morning all!

2008-01-21 01:24:33

Hey gang! Monday morning again.... fun, fun!! I just wanted to say
hello to everyone and see how you guys were doing! For those of you
who didn't get a chance to go to Saturday's meeting, it was super
informative. Dr. Kim Schmitt is so nice and explained all about sleep
apnea. I don't have it so I had never met her and I didn't know how
bad it was on some of you.
Anyway, I just wanted to give you guys an update. I forgot to say how
many inches I had lost at the meeting. It's like when you stand up
you forget everything because so many good thoughts and feelings come
rushing to your brain and it just has a system overload... LOL.
Anyway, today is my two month anniversary. WOOHOO! I have lost 51 lbs
and 25.75 inches. For me the weight loss is great, but the inches
lost let's ME know I am changing!!! I feel just wonderful. Sometimes
I get disappointed in my lbs lost, but then I remember that muscle
weighs more than FAT and I AM GAINING MUSCLE!! Well I just HAVE to
be. I mean I do water aerobics 4 times a week and ride my bike the
other days vs. NO EXERCISE pre-op so some of this has to be turning
me into a lean mean machine. LOL- hey don't laugh at me, this is my
way of dealing with this. Just kidding!
Anyway, I know I asked this a couple of weeks ago, but I like it when
everyone shares their milestones. I found a new protein that is
GOOD... I had to laugh because Rona made me announce that as one of
my milestones... lol. She is so funny! But seriously guys, share your
joys with us!!

Surgery date

2008-01-20 15:31:13

Hello everybody! I'm a newby. This is my first post. I don't get to
spend much time online, so today I have been reading 94 emails. I
love the support out there. I have a surgery date of May 27!! Dr.
Schmitt. I am so excited. I am making 2 great changes in my life at
the end of this month. After 14 years I am transfering out of the
Post Office I have been working in and moving to one closer to home.
They are willing to wait on me until after the surgery. Big changes
but I have a lot of support.
I'm adding everyone of you to my prayer list!
God Bless!

vena cava went downhill

2008-01-20 10:35:32

Hi all. Well, I went through with the vena cava filter procedure, but
it didn't work. Dr Miles tried but apparently my artery didn't want
to go along with it so he couldn't get it in. So after I made an
idiot out of myself in recovery by bawling like a baby, we came home.
Now we wait to see what happens. Dr Miles told Stan he wanted to do a
vena cava gram ( I really don't know what that is--but o.k.) and see
if there is another artery to use. What has me bothered is why it
didn't go through. Maybe mine turns sideways or something. Oh well,
I've come to far to turn around now. And even if I wanted to I don't
think Chan would let me. He was at the hospital before we were and
stayed til we left. So I'm thanking you buddy for sticking with us.
Your the best!!! When he asked me last year if he could be my angel-
he really meant it. And I thank God for him.
To make a long story short-I guess my surgery is probably cancelled
for Tue 5/20. All things happen for a reason. So I have to keep
telling myself that. It'll happen someday if the Lord's will.
Everyone stay encouraged and keep loosing!
Kathy

Help :(

2008-01-19 23:12:51

I saw the Dr last Monday and says I am doing really well and losing my weigh in the right pace. I have at least 40 more to go. I am really excited. [INLINE]

However, I have found myself getting weak at the ballgames with their "coke and crushed ice" I was doing soo good over a month and this week I have been, oh let me have a sip here and there. I sure hope I don't blow up my pouch... What am I doing to myself?? I feel like a failure. Of course, I didn't GULP the drinks just SIP.. but still [INLINE]

I keep telling myself stop here thats it.. no more losing weigh, but hey I want to go down 40 more lbs and want to feel thin, feel good and be able to do more than I have ever done in my life.

Am I just going through a Phase ( temporarily)?? Help!!!

We are compiling a list of songs and particpants will be able to choose the
song's they walk to on a first come, first served basis.
It's time to start getting excited and start looking for that beautiful "after"
outfit. Make sure you have a "before" outfit as well.
See you at tomorrow's meeting where Dr. Kim Schmitt will be speaking on Sleep

2008-01-18 18:52:57

Hey everyone, and Happy Mother's Day to all you moms, step-moms,
grandmoms, foster moms, and those who have ever been like a mother
to someone.
I've been a little down the past week. Everything had gone so
smoothly until now. I had my approval from Blue Cross less than 2
weeks after my initial consult! But now my WLS doc is telling me
that I haven't been compliant enough over the years
with my diabetes doctor. I can easily see their point. They're
worried that maybe I won't be compliant with my post-surgery doctor
visits or maybe even my diet. I'm not sure now, however, what
they're going want me to do. I already have my next appointment
with my diabetes dr in 3 months in July, so maybe after that if I've
been as good as possible, my WLS doc will schedule me for
before Christmas.
Thanks for listening. You guys are just awesome.

Plateau

2008-01-17 21:57:44

Hey I need help I had surgery on 4/18/2003 and have lost 25lbs but I
have not lost anything in over a week. Can somebody tell me how to
break this plateau. I am starting to get real discouraged. Please
help. Thanks Kathy

can't seem to get back on the protein

2008-01-17 13:34:04

Hello All,

I read all your post but have never posted before. I was doing well after my surgery 1/22/03 but then my life came tumbling down around me. My two teenage girls had a horrible car wreck and after 5 days in ICU, I lost my 14 year old daughter Amber. My 16 year old Alecia was driving the vehicle when they wrecked and had a lot of major problems as well..she is home now and I am taking care of her 24/7..Of course after all of those days in ICU and long days in the hospital and through the funeral,etc..I have gotten totally off my plan..I did continue my vitamins and drank Atkins shakes some in the hospital but I just can't seem to get back on track..my hair is thinning really fast..I was down 73 pounds before the accident and am down 95 + now..

Any suggestions on what to try ??

Thanks, Tammy

For me it varies- alot. Some days are as follows:
ProCal shake with fat free skim milk (for the added protein) with
strawberries- awesome flavor and this starts me with 24 grams of
protein
I try to drink a lot of fluids before lunch.
For lunch I have been eating either grilled chicken or tuna. I did
try some deli meat and cheese the other day and it contained like 17
grams of protein (and is cheaper) so I might start eating this for
lunch. I also occasionally eat like refried beans. Sometimes I get
pintos and cheese from Taco Bell or a chicken quesadilla and I pick
the chicken and cheese out and leave behind most of the bread.
By the time I can drink after lunch, I feel like the day is gone so I
normally don't get in much fluid wise until after I eat dinner.
For dinner I am eating about the same things that I eat for lunch. I
have tried many things (pasta, rice, etc) but I find I do much better
just eating meat. This also helps me get in my protein.
I ate broiled fish from Captain D's the other night and that was
wonderful. We have gone out to eat a couple of times lately due to
schedules and I have found it easier than I had imagined. Most places
I have been (Chili's, OCharley's, Captain D's, Cracker Barrel, Back
Yard Burgers, anyplace Mexican) I was able to find something healthy
and WLS friendly on their menus. You just have to look!
Anyway, I drink the remaining of my fluids before I go to bed.
I hope this helps- but please remember that just because these things
work for me, doesn't mean they will work for you. It is a trial and
error process. And somedays I can't eat something I ate the day
before. It just depends.

Hello friends, I just wanted to share with you that I have lost total 55 lbs since my surgery Feb,6 2003. My closet is empty and have at least 4 outfits I can hang on to for the time being.

A wedding dress that I wore 13 years ago that fit TIGHT, now I can just pull over my head and it was loose. And I had gone to the space camp andknow that blue outfit (space suit), well I can just almots fit in it. THe zipper meets maybe 1 half inches. Cant' zip it yet, but it won't be long..

I have walked 2miles daily, and do a little jog here and there. No longer a diabetic.. Wow, feel soo great adn was looking at my high school pictures and I think I am down to that size ( in body). Except for the hang over belly I didn't have then, I have now.. But its shrinking as I walk etc etc. IT's amazing feeling. Eating good... takingit easy tho. but feel wonderful..

SOmething, I didn't notice til yesterday, that I usually have to get someone to help me reach to the bottm of the washing machine, and yesterday, I did it by myself. I could reach.. Isn't that strange?? Just wanted to share this with you guys..

My last TEST!

2008-01-16 07:40:50

I had my last test today... a stress test... that wore me out! Dr.
Groves' office sent my paper work into BCBS on April 25th. I hope to
hear something around next friday. They said they usually hear from
them in around 3 weeks.
HEY Rona or whoever... Do you give out goodie bags at your monday
night meetings? Just curious. Be my luck I won't have a date by the
May 17th meeting and hopefully my date will be before the June
meeting. Dr. Groves hasn't gotten too far up to his neck in RYN's
yet. :)
Well... I'm almost there... just standing waiting to CROSS OVER!! :)
Have a great day everyone!!

Trying Food Questions

2008-01-15 16:57:23

Hey All!
I KNOW I know all of these answers but currently they have escaped
me! So can someone give me time frames on trying the following foods:
1) Nuts- Peanuts are looking tempting to me, but I am not sure when I
can try these. They didn't upset me before surgery, so I was
wondering how they affect you post-op.
2) Also, do you guys know how long we are suppose to wait before
trying vegtables? I am CRAVING corn and didn't know when we could try
it. I did eat some Cantalope (spelling ?) last night and it was
AWESOME! No nutritional content but still a good occasional snack.
Hope all is well with everyone.

Hi All

2008-01-15 00:51:50

Amanda wanted us to share milestones so I thought I'd share this one. I walked
in a March of Dimes walk a thon for almost 6 miles and didn't really even get
tired. We had so much fun that my husband and I took the dogs and did almost
the same walk the next day! Then, today I started walking briskly for 30
minutes at lunch. I just want to be healthier and it's been FUN!
Another milestone is that Wade has a hernia and has to have surgery. For once
it's not ME being the patient. He's a little nervous but Dr. Miles is doing it
and I know he'll be just fine!

Milestone and stuff

2008-01-14 22:31:53

Hey Gang!
I hope everyone is doing okay and that May has been a great losing
month for everyone! :o)
I wanted to share a milestone with everyone: This past weekend I went
to the Beale Street Music Fest in Memphis, TN. We walked (my guess)
about 4-5 miles and I was not out of breath nor did I feel the need
to sit down. We walked down Beale Street onto Riverside Drive and
then stayed down there and walked around for about 4 hours- standing
the entire time because it was an outside concert- and then walked UP
A HUGE hill and back down Beale Street to get to our parking spot.
Anyway, I was laughing and talking while doing this and not laboring
for air. This was a HUGE step for me. I normally get out of breath
walking Walmart- well I did pre-op, so anyway, I just wanted to share
this with you guys.
Also, I am having problems getting my protein in, I think. I do drink
some of it and some I get from foods. I just need to know if anyone
knows where I can get a listing of what foods contain how much
protein. I think I maybe getting in enough, because I have been able
to eat chicken etc. But I normally eat out for lunch and I am not
able to find out what amount of protein these foods contain. Anyway,
help with this would be appreciated.
Anyone else have any milestones? I am thinking waiting for this
month's meeting is going to be hard- LOL. I miss chatting with
everyone!

Return of "The ChanMan"

2008-01-14 03:26:01

Hi Every Body,
This is "The ChanMan" letting everyone know that I am still alive and
kicking and getting better every day. My Tummy Tuck went off with out a
hitch and Dr. Eich removed 21 lbs.
My RNY was lap so I had no idea of the pain level of a large gut cut. I
am bouncing back just not quite as fast as I was anticipating, but heck,
I am only a week out. I will be very happy when the (3) drains and 115
(I think was the count) staples are removed. And if you are wondering if
it as worth it and if I would do it over...... YES, in a heartbeat!
Kudos to the Great Staff at MCE especially....
Rona, Dr. Miles, Dr. Eich, the O.R. Staff & 6th floor personnel for the
excellent service and for giving me back the gift of living a life of
normality.

down hill slope

2008-01-14 00:03:27

I thought I would let everyone know how things are going. My surgery
date is quickly coming upon me and I think I've hit the last minute
jitters. Most of me is excited and the other part I guess is scared
silly! Chan says that is normal so that makes me feel better.Knowing
that the other side is going to be so much better helps alot. I think
having the filter put in has un-nerved me more than the surgery--and
they say it's nothing to it. So I'm probably getting worked up over
nothing. But on the good side, I have lost 69 pounds pre-op and as of
the meeting Mon night I only like 17 more to be where Dr Miles wanted
me before surgery. I never thought I could loose 42 pounds in 2
months but it looks like by the Grace of God I will make it. There
are so many people who believed in me when I couldn't believe for
myself. After daddy passed away on March 24, I really thought about
just forgetting it all. But between Stan and Chan they pushed me on
and helped me see through my grief that this was for me--not daddy.
And now that I have 18 days left-I'm glad they did. Wes and Rona
deserve credit to cause they have kept a check on me and Wes has
pushed me to drink protein and water. It has really worked. Everyone
in the group has been so great to keep encouraging and making us feel
a part of. If I started naming people I'd miss someone so I won't
even try. But thanks to all of you. This has been a sorta long
journey, but worth every mile. (210 miles round trip--ha!) But the
best is yet to come.
Sorry this is so long. I hardly ever post, but this is the one place
that I can spill my guts and you all understand. I have to see Dr
Miles on the 9th--then have the filter put in and my last pre-op
visit on the 14th. Then the meeting is on the 17th and I have to be
back down there on the 19th for the pre-op class and surgery on the
20th. I think we should move down there. I wonder if Chan's barn is
still up--maybe we could share a room with the goats.
To everyone waiting for a date or a first visit--hang on. Already I
can say the wait is worth it. And the last few months seem to fly--I
promise!! Kathy

regarding when your new stomach can start trying new things?
Everything I have is so vague! What about breads other than toast,
crackers, i.e. noodles in some casseroles and soups, tops to pot
pies, etc. Is everything so vague because they want you to be so
careful and trial/error alot?

PANNICULECTOMY---TUMMY T UCK ( ? from POP TART ? )

2008-01-12 09:27:55

Hello Everyone--Believe me im not in any hurry to have a tummy tuck
at all. I have had all the surgeries I can handle for the past 9
months. I do however have a question? Does anyone know if United
Healthcare usually covers the tummy tuck?
I could get into another smaller size if I were to go ahead and have
it done but right now--I just cant handle the thought of any more
pain.
I hope everyone is doing well.
Joe and Connie I hear you two are doing so so great!! Im so proud
of the two of you. I never heard back from you after your little
vacation. I hope you two had a wonderful time.
Granmaw Peg thank you so much for all the love and concern you have
sent my way. It has meant so much to me. I have been down so much
lately but having friends like you, Jenn, Rona, Wes, Tim, Chan and
so many others has made this last hard road easier to bear.
Im still fighting to keep these seizures under control but one day
at a time is all I can do. I will come out Victorious!!! Just give
me a little time....LOL
Can you guys believe our little buddy Jenny? She has aleady lost
over 65lbs. Im so proud of her. I cant wait to see you again Jen.
One of these days I will be healthy enough to drive myself back up
to MCE for a meeting.
Take care everyone. Those of you still waiting for a date or
approval hang in there. Your day will come..the wait is well worth
it.
I went to my neices wedding yesterday. I had the best time mainly
because my neice, my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and many others
did not recognize me until I spoke to them.. I LOVED IT.....WOO

"Late Dumping Syndrome"

2008-01-12 03:02:29

Hey guys.....long time no speak, I am trying to get some information
on this since it seems that I am experiencing it. Seems that if I
eat anything that remotely has any type of carbs in it I have a
reaction about an hour or two later I have extremely low blood sugar--
-I have researched some on the web and know that it is called late
dumping syndrome where my body dumps insulin to take care of
the "sugar" but by the time it gets to where it needs to go the food
is gone already so therefore it reduces my boold sugare level (the
only time I have had it tested was last week and it was 55)----If
anyone has any info on this or can point me in some direction it
would be greatly appreciated.
ps. I have had nor have ever had any problem eating carbs like them
making me sick right off the bat like some people have..........and
have only recently started having this problem. It is occuring more
often and I am trying to get a handle on things and keep my blood
sugar at some kind of consistency.

T-shirts and stuff

2008-01-12 01:46:39

Hi All!
Just a reminder that our new F.A.C.E.S. of WLS T-Shirts will be
available for sale at Monday night's support group meeting. We have
4 different styles and 5 colors. They're $15.00. Hope to see you
all there! The group gets to keep a portion of the proceeds so it's
a fundraiser for F.A.C.E.S. in addition to just being alot of fun.
Dr. Kim Schmitt will be speaking at our Saturday meeting in May. She
specializes in Sleep Apnea which, as most of you know, affects MANY
surgical weight loss patients. It should be a great presentation.
We're gearing up for our Fashion Show in August - scouting locations
and such. This year we're hoping it will be a full scale gala.
We're looking at the Wynfrey as one possible location. Wouldn't that
be fun? Start looking for your "after" outfit because you're going
to make GREAT supermodels.
Thanks to all of you who donated at last Saturday's meeting. Wes and
I are going to the court house next week to file our non-profit
organization papers which will allow us to apply for grant money.
Once we can do that we can do more and more with the group without
always having to ask for money. I appreciate your support with this.
Happy day!

Surgery Date

2008-01-11 15:21:11

I attended Saturday's meeting at 3:00 and it was absolutely
wonderful. On Tuesday I received my surgery date. My surgery is May
14, 2003 and I am so excited and can't wait to be able to stand and
say I have reached my goal. Thank you so much for the support.

WLS Walk in Nashville...

2008-01-11 10:15:42

I got this off of another WLS group I belong to. Thought I'd pass it
along to all of you in case anyone wanted to walk around Nashville. I
don't know the time, or any other details. I have sent an email to the
address listed and I will pass along the details as I get them.
Tim.

Happy Easter!

2008-01-10 22:49:03

I hope all of you out there have a wonderful and joyous Easter. As I
rode the city streets this morning I saw so many families out doing the
Easter Egg Hunt thing and having a ball. Even Joy got up an hour early
to make an Easter Basket for Caitlin. She was munching the ears off of
a fluffy yellow bunny when I walked in the door a few moments ago.
As an Easter Thank You, I'd like to say thank you to each of you for all
of the wonderful things you have allowed me to share with you. As I
look back at the pictures I have taken, the friends I have made, the
laughs and smiles I have been a part of, I know in my heart that I am
truly one of the luckiest people in the world to be able to call all of
you, my friends. Thank You!
Tim.

VCR alert

2008-01-10 19:17:31

Everyone be sure and tune in or set your VCR for ABC tonight 7pm central
time for John Stossel's hour long special "Help me! I can't help myself!"
about "gambling, eating, and other 'so called' addictions." If it's anything
like that segment on 20/20 the other day it's going to be VERY interesting.
For those of you that missed 20/20 he made the comment that "Al Roker had
the willpower to get up at 4 am every morning to do the weather but had to
have his stomach stapled to lose weight." stay tuned..

Well, for those of you that made it to the GIANT TENT TOOL SALE, great!
For those of you that missed it, you'll have to follow their
taillights to the Atlanta Metro Area to see what you missed. Caitlin,
Wes and I were down there till 11:30pm last night and at 9:am this
morning helping them box it all up and stuff it in some tractor trailers
for the trip east. All of you will be super proud of Caitlin, she
worked like a man all day long and made her first $40.
Taking the 200 x 100 tent down was really interesting. We only had one
center pole out of 4, fall unexpectedly. Guess who it decided to head
for, that's right, little ole me. But I'm smarter than a pole any day,
so I just sidestepped it and got a canvas "overcoat" instead. I did get
a little overheated and was extremely sensitive to the sun. But this
was my first real outdoor workout since I started taking a BP med a few
months ago. So I'll just have to learn how to adjust, and to seek more
shade, and quicker than I did today. Thought I was going down for the
count folks.
All in all it was a fun day, I got the new experience of handling a
really big tent and working with 2/3 of my kids too. I got paid too,
no, not in tools! Think I'll buy a new digital camera...
What neat stuff did all of you do today?

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
(George Carlin)
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
Never let the brain idle. " An idle mind is the devil's workshop."
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.
Be ALIVE while you are alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9. Don't take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country,
but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

hello

2008-01-08 14:54:35

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I haven't been to a Faces
meeting yet. I am going to try and make it one of these days. I live in
Huntsville and attend WINGS of WLS locally. Anyway, I had lap RNY in
Birmingham at Carraway with Dr. Laws and also Dr. Roberts (Huntsville). My
surgery was 5/21/02 and I have lost 110 lbs. I did have some post op
complications. I had a leak that was discovered the day after surgery. I had
to have a second lap procedure to see if they could repair the leak (they
couldn't find it) and place drains and a feeding tube in. I spent 10 days
total in the hospital, 5 of them in ICU. After I got home, I had fluid on my
lungs that almost had to be drained, and anemia. I also came home with the
drains and feeding tube in place, and kept them for several days. But I
recovered, and am here to say I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Life is
so much better on the losing side. I can do things now I never thought I'd
ever be able to do again. I am about 35-40 lbs. away from my personal goal
weight, and 10 lbs. away from no longer being "obese."

Last night, for the first time, I used my card (the one that says I've had the surgery and asks restaurants to give consideration...). I always figured it would be embarrassing and just wouldn't be worth it.

I used at Golden Corral in Centerpoint. Of course, the cashier read it and was clueless and had to go ask the manager. I watched them and fortunately he said "oh yeah, sure" and told her which key to press for me to get the child's buffet and he went on his way. I was thankful.

I was about to go to my seat when the manager walked up to me and asked how much weight I had lost. I told him 91 pounds. He smiled a big smile, shook my hand and congratulated me and said "that's great!". We continued to talk a little; he had a few questions, he was genuinely interested...It wasn't embarrassing and it was worth the effort and I saved $5.00.

So, if you haven't yet used your card, go ahead, it's not as bad as you may fear.

HOWDY ALL!!!

diabetes ?

2008-01-08 03:18:53

Does anyone have or does anyone know someone who has continued to
have diabetes after their surgery? I hear a lot about people who no
longer need their diabetes meds afterward, however, I know not
everyone is so lucky. I've been an insulin-dependent diabetic for
25 years, so I'm not sure if there's much hope of coming off of
insulin entirely (though my requirements should drop substantially).
Bright blessings to all,
Brenda

What a day...

2008-01-07 14:14:43

Well... And that's about all I can say too. After a long day of house
work and chasing down some elusive shrink wrap for pallets for my
friends at the GIANT TENT TOOL SALE, Matt came over and we headed off to
Huntsville to watch his friend Jonida Bego (pronounced "Yo neda")
perform in a one woman play that was fantastic! More about it later.
We stopped at the Cracker Barrel on the way home and had a decent dinner
at a backwards CB. It was set up in a mirror image of any CB I have
ever been in. Made me feel like I had entered the twilight zone. When
I cut the truck off, I noticed a funky sound from the engine as it "took
5". We ate, got back in the truck and it cranked up just fine and the
noise was gone. For a little while. We hopped up on I-65 South and
headed home. We had gone about 10 miles when I had to decelerate for
some slower traffic. The noise came back, and got louder and louder.
Sounded like a rod coming through the block, but it was hollow sounding.
Louder, louder, silence. Coasted to a stop right before a bridge and
tried to crank it. Engine turned over very fast and easy. I've heard
that sound before. I pulled the oil fill cap and had Matt turn the
engine over while I watched the valve train for movement. No movement,
so, that means, no timing belt.
Put out the "Man Overboard" distress call on my Nextel radio to all my
Jeeping buddies and my oldest Son Wes was the closest available rescue
ride. At least it was a beautiful night. Matt and I laid on the hood
and watched the stars and clouds as they drifted by.
So, in the morning I get to go recover my truck with a tow dolly or a
wrecker and park it in the "repair" line that is forming in front of my
house. Still have to put a transmission in The Mighty, Mighty GeoVan,
and the Bronco needs a fuel pump, and now the truck needs a timing belt.
At least the Montero is still chugging along. I'm about to run out of
vehicles!
Like I said, What a day...
Tim.

I have questions, and my date is sooon!

2008-01-07 11:12:55

Can anyone describe what the preop and post op procedures are like,
i.e. how many needles, tubes and when those are removed?

I GOT A DATE!!!!

2008-01-07 07:13:47

Hello Everyone, I don't post much, but I got a date for my surgery
(May 9th)and I wanted anyone who could to give me advice on ways to
stay healthy after my surgery. I am 5 feet tall and I weigh 330lbs. I
will possibly have to have open surgery as opposed to lap. Anyone who
has had the surgery open please email me with your experiences.
Thanks, Tamika

Hi Everyone

I'm new to this group, but so far it's been very interesting. I've
noticed lots of recipes and tips here, and now I have one too. I
receive a newsletter from CookingFreeDaily with lots of hints and
(sometimes)great recipes. Here's one from today's newletter:
Recipe of the Day: Atkins Friendly Cheesecake
2 8-ounce packages of Neufchatel cheese
12 packets Splenda
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 eggs
Mix cheese, Splenda and vanilla. Add eggs. Mix well with electric
mixer. Bake in pie plate at 350 F for 40 minutes. Cool three hours.

Kidney Stones

2008-01-06 09:40:57

Hello to everyone in the Group...what a wonderful support and
informational group you guys have been. I don't post much, but I
read everyone's questions and answers--you guys are wonderful! So,
here I am eight months post-op from my gastric by-pass with Dr.
Schmitt at MCE (I have lost 105 lbs. and have gained my life back)
and I have a question...
I haven't necessarily experienced "dehydration", but have been
diagnosed with kidney stones from lack of enough water. I have read
on obesityhelp.com that stones seem to be an occuring effect from
gastric surgery. Has anyone else in the FACES group suddenly
experienced stones? Does anyone know how to keep them from
happening? The first time, I went to the doctor in exquisite pain
and the second time I took some pain medicine, drank water
and "waited it out" in pain. I know that water is the key, but what
is the cause? I have never had stones before in my life.
Any answers that someone could provide would be a great help in
trying to keep myself out of pain and in control!

Do we have a meeting Monday March 31???????

2008-01-05 08:10:46

Can someone confirm that we have a meeting Monday March 31 please?

Finally back online

2008-01-04 18:33:45

I wanted to say thank you for all the well wishes that I received
during my surgery. I go back to work tomorrow full time, I have been
working part time from home the last week getting ready for it. I am
not really thrilled about going back but it will be fine. I am doing
alot better and am tired of my binder, I will be ready to tell it
goodbye. I have to wear it 4 - 6 weeks though so I still have a
little while, it will be 3 weeks on Tuesday.
Hope to see all of you at the meeting tomorrow night. I need to go
through my closet and find some clothes I can wear next week, the
binder takes up so much room, I can't wear alot of my work clothes
that I was wearing before the surgery. I know it is just the binder
though because if I put them on without it, they are two big. I'm in a
catch 22, oh well. Never thought I would ever pull those knit pants
out again, but I think I will be looking for them in a little bit. I
have lived in shorts since my surgery, wish I could wear them to work.
Oh well, I will survive.
Love ya all,
Lisa

HELP !!!

2008-01-04 11:29:45

Does anyone know of a doctor I can get an apt. with on Monday to help me with a letter to show that my TUMMY TUCK is medically nessacary?
Let me give you some of the details. I am changing jobs and I will start my new job on April 21st. So If I have to have the tt done now before my insurance runs out and while I have the time off work. IF not I will have to wait a year to have it done. Doctor Eich has talked to the insurance company. And now they are saying that they need proof of rashes , treatment, and proof that it is medically necessary. I am scheduled to have the tt on Tue. if I could get in to see a doctor and them write me a quick letter and fax it over to insurance ... they will put my case in a expidatied review statues... do you think I have any hope of getting my tt???

Millie needs a ride for Monday's FACES meeting...

2008-01-04 09:52:06

Millie Slaughter needs ride for the FACES Monday night meeting. For
those that don't know her, Millie is blind, and I think it would be best
for all of us if she didn't drive to the meeting, although she'd
probably do a better job than most of the people I encountered on the
freeway tonight. She has to rely on her WLS Family to help her out on
meeting days usually for just a ride home, as she can usually find a
ride from someone in her building to bring her to the meetings. If you
can help her out, she would really appreciate it. She is a wonderful
person and a real clown to talk to. No, really, she's also a Certified
Clown and does parties and performs with a local Clown Troupe too.
I would be happy to give her a ride anywhere, anytime, but, The Mighty
Mighty GeoVan is still sitting in the street in front of the house
waiting for a transmission "donor" to meet an untimely demise, so I am
still in my little truck (which overfloweth with crapeth) and I can only
seat two (on a good day). Joy may or may not make the meeting as she
has a possible "surprise" inspection coming up and has been working late.
If you can help Millie out with a ride back to Southside (24th and
Highland) she would love you dearly. Call her at 930-9950. Thanks!
Tim.

I found a protein drink .........

2008-01-02 12:19:49

Maybe some of you already do this, but as I was desperate for a
protein source I created a tasty drink.
8 oz Fat Free Skim Milk - 9 grams protein (I forgot amount of carbs)
1 pkg of the Vanilla Protein Pro Cal 100 - 15 grams protein
2 cut up strawberries
Okay- we have this little hand held blender and it chops the
strawberries to NOTHING and well mixes the protein and milk and
strawberries. If you didn't know better, you would think this a drink
for people who didn't count fat grams, protein or calories. IT IS
AWESOME. I think it would be just as good without the milk, just use
water as I normally do with the Pro Cal 100, but like I said I needed
a boost of energy so I added the milk.
By the way today (Tuesday 3/25)I am 6 days POST OP. I can tell a
difference in my clothes but I won't weight until I go see Dr.
Schmitt Wednesday 3/26 to have my staples removed- AAAHHH. I will let
you know how it goes.

I had the unique pleasure of dumping all the work I had planned for the
day and going to watch ChanMan and Catfish tune up their bowling arms at
the lanes beside Target on 280. And I don't have to tell you how it
warmed the cockles of my little heart to see both Wes and ChanMan out
there bowling like pro bowlers. Wes even let me
bowl with his ball and take a shot or two at the pins. Now, I gotta
tell y'all I'm an Alabama Football man, so I just painted a target on
those little white pins and went for the "long bomb". From the way
everyone looked at me, I figured I had done it wrong. Wes whisp
