Avis-Connie-Matt's Graduation Pics...

2007-03-30 19:41:03

Picture 1: Avis Marie (Pop Tart) Davis and her hubby Ronnie as Joy and
I caught them cruising the block.
Picture 2: When Connie goes, she goes all the way, out the door, down
the elevator, into the car and all the way home! Ain't nuthing here but
the sweet aroma of bowel preps gone by...
Picture 3: Matt's Graduation Picture, L-R, Matt's sweettie, Jane
Cornelius, Matt Suggs, Wes's squeeze Tara Miller, and our little boy Wes.
Hospital updates from MCE:
Avis Marie: Doing much better, each day better and stronger, met her
husband Ronnie, might have to get him on our fishing team guys! And we
may have to dress Avis up like a man and try to sneak her on our team as
well.
Connie: Gone like the wind! Hooray for Connie!
Nikkia: Was zonked when we got there. Ain't Versed a wonderful thing?
I did loan her my hand again, gladly. And Joy and I even brought her
a baby Poo bear that wiggles it's arms up and down to help cheer her up
about having to undergo some quick surgery tomorrow to improve blood
circulation to her belly button. She's a sweetie!
Dave "The Mule" Odem: Brother Dave is not doing well, when Joy and I
were there we spoke with Sylvia and she said they did surgery Wednesday
night to take care of some problems. He may have a head and a hide like
a mule, but he really needs our prayers. And Sylvia needs our support
as well. He's in the SICU unit, so no visitors, but you can stop by and
let Sylvia know we love them both.
Tim.

Mule Update

2007-03-30 15:10:33

Dear Friends,
Please keep Dave in your prayers as he is recovering from emergency surgery. He is at Medical Center East and his family and loved ones are there with him. He is still in SICU so can't have any visitors but please keep him in your thoughts.
Thanks,
Debbie Estep

Hey, Karen--thanks!

The way I did was take the soda straight and then have water to wash it down with. That way I did not have to keep tasting it.

Dave "mule"

2007-03-29 18:55:51

Most of you know me as Regina. I had my surgery last month and my
husband Gary, had his surgery on Tuesday. I want to get everyone to
pray for Dave. He is back in MCE and in the SICU. I work with his
wife, Sylvia, and spoke to her tonight by phone. Daves condition is
serious and he's on the ventilator. He and Sylvia need all our
prayers. Hes a great guy and we wish him all Gods strength and love
in this critical time.

Updates on Dave (Mule), Avis Marie, Nikkia, Connie

2007-03-29 15:15:49

Hello all, here are today's updates:
Dave Odom-Folks Dave and Sylvia need your prayers.
Dave went back to the hospital last night, continued
w/severe nausea and vomiting, went back to surgery
last night where they found an umbilical hernia,
intestinal obstruction and a leak (per his wife). He
is in SICU and is expected to be there for 2-3 days,
condition is listed as serious. He is on a vent and
his incision has been left open. She says she was told
this is normal at this point. Please remember them in
your thoughts and prayers.
Avis Marie-looking good today!!! she was cruising the
halls when we got there, stated she was wore out and
hurting but she looked great and was in good spirits.
Her sweet husband Ronnie was there with her and said
today had been a much better day. You keep walking
girl! She hopes to be discharged tomorrow if she
continues at current state of wellness.
Nikkia-Nikkia was not feeling well, very nauseous
after having some broth earlier. She will be going
back to surgery in the morning for them to clean out
some infection around her belly button (per her mom).
She said Doc said it should only take 15-20 minutes.
Connie-when we got to her room it was empty. That
sassy woman was doing so well she had flown the coup
and gone home!!!! What a woman. Now that is the kind
of recovery we all pray for.
Please remember our friends in your prayers.
Joy

2007-03-29 02:53:27

Hi Everybody!
Just wanted to stop by for a quick second and let you guys know that I'm home and doing really good. I had one "bumpy" night after surgery but other than that it was much less painful than I expected. The drains are frustrating but hopefully they'll come out this Friday and I'll feel much more normal.
I want to thank each one of you who visited, called and said prayers for me. I am so fortunate to have such a wonderful group of friends. I'm so proud of you all for working toward good health and well being - it's worth every step of the journey.
Thank you again for being true, genuine friends!
Love,
Rona

20 lbs-You go MULE!!!!
Mule, I have bloat, swelling AND gas everytime Joy cooks! But she's
worth it, especially if she'll let me buy the Corvette I have been
drooling over for a week as I drove by it every day to and from the City
Stages warehouses.
Tim.
You will have some "bloat" in your abdomen for a week
or 2 due to swelling and the gas, it should improve
dramatically after that. The majority of my weight was
in my belly and I have lost the most inches there, but
it is still my "largest" asset. Give yourself a good
month to 6 weeks to feel "normal" again. Stay active
but don't overdo it. Remember, our lap incisions heal
quickly externally but internally it takes 4-6 wks to
heal, just like if we had had an open surgery.
God bless,
Joy

Updates-Connie, Avis Marie, Nikkia,Mule

2007-03-28 13:00:21

Hi all!
Updates as follows:
Conniehunny-our precious Conniehunny had her surgery
today, lap, did awesome. She was sore but stated she
felt much better than after her C-sections and looked
great! She had already been up and walking! Her hubby
Joe was with her.
Avis Marie (aka PopTart)-our precious PopTart is still
having some pain and nausea issues, as you know she
had her procedure open so more pain is to be expected,
she too has been up and walking as well and is looking
forward to better days!
Nikkia Craig-Nikkia has a brand new FLAT tummy!-today
was tummy tuck day for her. She also had a bouncying
baby hernia that was HUGE, apparently also unexpected
so her surgery was more extensive than she had
anticipated and when we got there she was in some BIG
pain. She was precious though and they were working on
getting her a pain pump. We checked back in before we
left and she was sleeping with her sweet mom at her
bedside who said she had gotten some pain medicine.
Gotta love those drugs at a time like that! LOL
Mule-Guys, our friend Dave is having a rough time. He
is unable to keep down any fluids and is very weak and
obviously discouraged right now. He has been in touch
w/his PCP and Dr. Miles thru out the day and evening
and may go back to the hospital tonight for IV
hydration and some further eval. I spoke w/both him
and his lovely wife Sylvia tonight and they know we
are praying for them.
Please keep our WLS family members in your prayers and
let them know they are loved!
Connie is in room 677, Nikkia 668, Avis 659
Hugs to all!
Joy
By the way-Pinky forgot the camera so no pics of our
friends, sorry!

My appt today

2007-03-27 13:08:05

I saw Dr. Miles today. Maybe it was just me, but I
felt like he was kind of rushing me and didn't want to
answer my questions. I guess he feels that, if you
attend the seminar, you shouldn't have additional
questions. He didn't really look at me or my chart,
but told me he could probably do the surgery lap. I
thought he would probably examine me or something! I
guess that's what the internist appt is for, though. I
have to go for that and the nutritionist 6/11.
Meantime, I'm going to call and set up my psych
evaluation with a doctor here.
I went by and saw Avis afterwards and she was in a lot
of pain. I'm kind of nervous about the whole thing now.

Update on Avis

2007-03-25 22:07:57

Went by to see Avis today after my appt. They have
moved her to a room (#659). I didn't stay long because
she wasn't doing well. She is in a lot of pain, and
her blood pressure is up, she thinks because of the
pain. She is disabled due to chronic pain and has a
high tolerance to pain meds. Her husband was with her.
Let's keep her in our prayers! Maybe she'll feel more
like visitors/phone calls in a few days.
BTW, Joy I gave her your love, but I'm not sure if
she'll remember anything I said!

Avis' surgery

2007-03-23 12:13:40

I just spoke to the volunteer in the waiting room at MCE. Avis is
out of surgery and is in Surgical ICU, which was expected because of
her medical conditions. Her husband had gone back to see her, so I
didn't get to talk to him. I left a message for her husband to call
me, so I will post later when I find out more information.

CS2002 is HISTORY!

2007-03-23 01:19:51

What a day! 8AM to 5PM, then 8PM to 1AM. That makes for a very long
day. Luckily, the place was so packed, I couldn't even get the truck in
except to one stage, so we just broke the others down and stacked them
on the sidewalks for me to pick up over the next few days. We did get
the Sampler Stage down and loaded on the truck and carted off to the
warehouse. At least we got something accomplished. Another problem we
ran into was no one else could "get-in" to load out their equipment, or
the tent tops that were over our stages, so everyone had no choice
except to sit and wait until their trucks could get in, with all their
stuff sitting on our stages.
I think the place filled up about noon. The people got so thick that I
had to stop driving my golf cart. I basically hung out behind the
Children's Stage from about noon until 5PM, then headed home, got a
whopping hour's worth of sleep, then picked up Joy at UAB, stopped off
at Brunos for our weekly "letting of the money" ritual, then headed back
to the warehouse, grabbed the big truck (mine's the bigger one in the
pictures below), and attempted to find a street that wasn't clogged with
cars and drunks. 6 blocks was the closest I could make it to the site
on the west side, and I found a place within 3 blocks on the east side,
so I walked in and helped tear everything apart. They were still
selling tickets at 10:PM, but then there were a couple of big acts that
were going to close the show.
I'm fixing to do some snuggle time, so here's the pictures...

CS2002 Day 1 and 1/2...

2007-03-21 18:05:43

I was SO tired when I got in last night (Friday night) that I don't even
remember coming home. We started the day (Friday) off with two stages
left to be built and a deadline of 12:Noon. With only a few minor snags
we made it with plenty of time to spare. If any of you caught the
picture that was on the front page of the Sat B'ham News that showed a
bunch of people dancing on a red stage, that would be the Dance Depot
stage and was built by yours truly (and a lot of others too).
After the place opens, we just ride around in our little golf carts
doing sort of a "rolling check" on our stages, or position ourselves so
we can respond to where ever we're needed to nail/screw stuff back
together. We had received constant weather briefings throughout the day
and had been warned of high winds coming that evening so we tried our
best to lash everything down. We had one 48mph gust before I left that
was an oman of things to come.
We had sandbagged or tied down all of our stuff before I left at 6:PM,
but this morning our stuff looked like a nuclear blast test site. Tents
reduced to shreds, sign boards that wouldn't budge had their signs
ripped away and blown to God knows where, our decorative picket fence
panels that go with the Sampler stage were blown all over the city. I
even saw one on Southside this morning as I was heading in, it had
traveled over TEN blocks from where I had screwed it to the front of the
stage the night before.
We had a lot of clean up and repair to do. I think we got most of the
damage control done by about 10:30AM. A lot of the venders tents and
displayed didn't fare so well. Their merchandise was scattered all over
the site when we got there this morning. I secured the perimeter
fencing in an effort to keep everyone out while the rest of our guys
loaded golf cart after golf cart with merchandise that we took back to a
central "dump" for the vendors to sort through. And the 45 degree
temperatures and 20mph winds all day long made things miserable. I was
fortunate enough to have taken Joy to work earlier this morning and
realized it was to cold for the shorts I had on. I did put some pants
on, but was counting on warming temps so only wore a T-shirt. Bad
mistake. I did manage to dig another T-shirt out of my truck box but it
didn't help that much. No sun, all day, just cold and windy. My entire
head is beet red from wind burn!
By noon, the people had decided to venture out and give it a shot.
Driving a "silent" golf cart amongst a crowd of people is no easy task.
We try our best to drive slow and not to "spook" the people, but with
golf carts that only run at idle, or wide open, it's hard. We had so
much trouble with the carts today, many ran out of gas, I towed 4, and
pushed 3 back to the "corral" that had broken down, none of them would
run except wide open which made for some "interesting" situations. Even
our radios took a nose dive today. We had so many that the mic buttons
stuck on that no one could actually use the radio net to talk.
BUT... All in all, I think the day was a good one, I saw so many kids
in the "Children's" area that were having a ball. They have a ton of
stuff for the kids in Linn Park. They have their own bands that really
put their heart and soul into performing for the kids.
We're all hoping for a record breaking Sunday tomorrow. If you come,
come early. AND I saw that they had plenty of wheelchair accessible
Port-O-Potties for the first time. The Hewlett Packard Technologies
display (2 tractor trailers) had one of the coolest wheelchair lifts on
it that I had ever seen (yes, I took pictures, see below). And
remember, I can be contacted on FRS Radio Channel 9.15 during the day,
or grab anyone with a Yellow Labeled radio on their hip and get them to
give me a holler by name on the "Site" channel (Ch. 2) and I can drive
my happy little butt over to see ya.
The down side of all of this for me personally will be tomorrow night.
I'll work something like 8-4 tomorrow, and then be back around 9:PM to
start getting ready for the shut-down at midnight. Then what took us a
week to haul in and set up, has to be off the streets by 7:AM Monday
morning. We somehow manage to do it year after year though. We usually
sleep Tuesday and then haul and pack everything back to the warehouse to
sit for another year the rest of the week. Between the heat last week
and the cold this weekend, my body is asking me why I do this every
year, and I really don't have an answer. I enjoy being a part of
"something", making it happen, watching the people enjoy the fruits of
my labor, working with my two sons and the rest of our bunch. Plus,
it's sort of like my "annual testosterone report card", can I move 600
concrete blocks by hand? Can I move 400 sheets of 3/4" plywood by hand?
Can I work 16/18 hours in a row doing physical labor? Well, it
looks like I get another "A" this year, but my joints are telling me I'm
not 20 any more, and I'm doing more damage than good. If I could learn
to "not help" and just drive the truck, I might do it again next year,
if I get the invite. And this isn't a job, you can't apply for any of
our positions, it is by invitation only, and I am proud that I have been
on that very small list for two consecutive years.
Here's the pictures, what few I had time to take today.
Tim.

I've got to change my appt

2007-03-21 02:10:08

My consult is Tuesday, but I'm going to have to change
it. Money is extremely tight right now and I just
don't have the $$ to pay for the appt. Not only that,
my husband got scheduled for days instead of nights
next week and he won't be able to take me. I could
drive myself, but I can't hardly see to drive at night
and wouldn't want to drive back from Bham by myself.
I'm going to try to get my appt for 6/4, only two weeks

all. She is here to help us along our journey. I am glad she was
there. I even let my guard down a little and had a few tears. She has
plenty of snot rags waiting in case we get a little emotional. She
was worth every penny........

updates on Rona, Dave, and Granmaw Peg

2007-03-19 11:36:30

Hi all, below are my updates:
Rona-beautiful as always, tired and sore but spirited
and determined. Room looks like a florist it is so
full of beautiful flowers. She appreciates all the
love.
Dave-having a tough time w/the nausea and a bit of
fever. He needs our support and encouragement. He is
in very capable hands w/wife Sylvia at his side.
Granmaw Peg-our beloved Granmaw Peg had her surgery
today. Hooray for her! Dr. Miles was able to do it
lap!!!! She was very sleepy but very beautiful just as
I knew she would be. She is happy to be on the "other"
side and she was able to go to a room! No ICU for her.
Rona is in 659, Dave in 651(my room in Dec!) and Peg
in 650. I am sure they would all appreciate well
wishers from the support group meeting tomorrow!
Please, everyone remember our friends in your prayers.
Love to all!

Has anyone heard from Grandma Peg?

Peg

2007-03-19 07:36:01

Peg, I know you won't get this until you get home as you are
probably at the hospital already, I wanted you to know I am thinking
of you. We are going to stop by and visit you tonight but I am sure
you won't remember that, I don't think anyone remembers much about
their first day. To may zzzzzzz's happening. LOL
You will be in my thoughts and prayers today.
See ya tonight.

Update on Rona

2007-03-19 04:20:26

Hi all, well we went to see Mrs. Rona last night, she looked
wonderful. We visited a couple of hours and even helped her take a
trip down the hall, it was so good to see her up and moving. She is
in room 659 for anyone that didn't know that yet. She has received a
ton of flowers and well wishes. I kept telling her wow look how flat
your tummy is. She wants to see Dr. Eich's handy work but is all
bandaged up still. In due time. Well I won't keep rambling, hope to
see everyone Saturday.

Peg,
I forgot to give you this scripture. A lady sent it to me before my surgery. I hope it helps you and everyone else. She was from the Obesityhelp site. I don't think she really knows what she did for me.
I have heard your prayers. I have seen your tears, surely I will heal you.

Fruit & Nut Doc/Mickie

2007-03-17 13:03:10

Mickie, I know Dr. Miles prefers Dr. Sparks, but he
told me that we could use another doctor if it was
covered by our insurance. We have a facility here with
several doctors that is on our insurance with only a
$14.00 co-pay. I plan on using someone in that group.
If it doesn't go well, then I'll go with Dr. Sparks.
I think Dr. Sparks has a payment plan. Maybe that will
help.

I live in Centerpoint and Joy's suggestions on Restaurants are great

Milestones!!

2007-03-16 21:30:11

Hope everyone is well this week! Remember-Granmaw
Peg's surgery is tomorrow!!!
My Milestones-I wore a size 20 dress(loose)to my son's
theatre banquet last Friday. I was a tight 26-28
pre-op and couldn't wear 3x's from Penney's, Sears-too
tight. I bought 2 size xl t-shirts from Sam's week
before last. I have NEVER been able to wear anything
from Sam's. My shoe size has gone from an 11W to a 9M.
I can get in my husband's size 38 waist jeans from OLD
NAVY-can you believe that? Clothing from OLD NAVY that
will fit ME! Now mind you I can't sit down in them but
I can zip and button them w/o lying on the bed so that
makes me proud. Now for my weight loss-major milestone
here-I broke 200 this morning!!!!!! 197 glorious
pounds. I never thought 197 #'s could look so good.
Seriously, when I had the surgery 200 didn't even seem
like a realistic goal so this is just staggering for
me! That is 20 lbs gone-45 to be within a "normal" BMI
(25), about 10 to be "overweight"(29.9) and not obese!
I cut my grass today, the whole front yard. It is not
a huge yard but very hilly and tough to mow. I have
been doing the flat part and letting my husband do the
steep parts but today I just went for it. It wasn't
easy and I was wore out but very proud. I sure hope it
grows slow, now hubby will expect me to do that ALL of
the time. LOL!!!!
Love,
Joy

places to eat near MCE

2007-03-16 08:28:00

Hi, Karen! I giggled when I saw your question on where to eat near MCE. My husband and I drove to the area to eat at a place that apparently no longer exists. It is like 'all' the restaurants in the area have closed up. We ended up at a Mexican restaurante and enjoyed the food very much. A couple could eat there for about $20 (plus cost for beer/alcoholic drinks if you order them). It is caddy-cornered to the McDonalds, right next to the interstate, on the parkway. ~Sandy

"Karen G." <want2bslim@...

Are there any good places really close to MCE that are

Pop Tart's Surgery

2007-03-16 01:37:38

Well hi everyone it's almost that time for me. Monday is just around
the corner. I am so nervous it is unbelievable. Finding out that my
surgery will definitly be open plus removing a very large hernia and
possibly removing my gall bladder, has made me feel almost sick to my
stomach with anxiety. I know it is very common and very normal to
feel this way. I just want it to be over.
The bowel thing, no biggie there. I thought I was going to have to
drink a gallon of some nasty concoction so getting the news about
that was a relief.
I went yesterday and started buying all my vitamins and some protein
sources. I bought something nasty from CVS that you mix with 2 oz.
of water and drink-it has 16 grams of protein and is supposed to
taste like chocolate. Somehow I find that part a little hard to
believe. Im still trying to find some of the B-12 that dissolves
under the tongue. My pharmacist at CVS didnt have a clue about it. I
still have to buy my pill cutter, guess I will get that today too. I
will be so glad when I can cut half of my daily pills out of my daily
routine period....That will be a GOOD thing....
Well keep me and Connie and Granmaw Peg in your prayers. Im sure
going to need them.

CONSULT WENT GREAT

2007-03-15 12:59:28

I finally had my consult with Dr. Miles. Deborah has set up all my
appt for this week and next. I still have a problem with the Fruit &
Nut Doctor paying her $375.00 of money I don't have. PLus the
questionaire I have to file out for her I feel some things are not
related to my surgery and non of her business. I quess this is really
aggravating me. I am a single parent. I can see giving Dr Miles that
money but not her. SOMEBODY SLAP ME.....I DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE
THIS. I WANT TO HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE ALL THE WAY BUT THIS IS REALLY
GETTING ME DOWN. ON THE QUESTIONAIRE IT ASK ABOUT THE STRESS. WELL,
ITS MONEY... MONEY... MONEY... AND LACK MONEY THAT CAUSES MY STRESS.
My insurance does not cover this at all. It would to another Fruit
and Nut but she is not on our insurance plan. Dr. Miles prefer we see
Dr. Sparks. Well, I quess I need to just hush and suck it up and go
do it.

Rona-Mule Pictures...

2007-03-14 13:07:22

Joy and I went to MCE and saw Mule and Rona. Both are fine. And I got
the pictures to prove it. When we found Mule, he was hall cruising in a
cute little blue print dress number with his wonderful wife Sylvia.
He was moving pretty good for a mule. He was doing pretty good and
seemed to be pretty much right on track as far as I could tell. Great
spirits and was cracking jokes left and right. Can't wait for y'all to
see him at the next meeting, gonna be a "New Mule" by then. Oh, I
forgot... Dave is in the same room that Joy was in on Dec 10th for her
surgery.
Rona hadn't been out of the recovery room long before we snuck in to see
her. She too looked great and was semi conscious and was even smiling a
little. I snuck over to the bed and gave her arm a "huggy", she opened
her eyes and I told her we were all here to make sure she was ok. She
opened her mouth and said "Humphduofgew hsyuwepfj wuifgosd" Now, what
that actually meant, we'll never know, but I like to think it was a
"thank you and I love all of you". We didn't stay long and turned her
over to Wades capable hands. The kids were there too. We headed out
and tried to figure out where else we could go to get in trouble.
Chan's house was next... Wes, Lisa, Joy and I popped in on Chan the Man
and Wes did some wheelchair repair, wait till he gets the bill for that
house call. He was typical Chan, had that smug little all knowing smile
on his face that makes you wonder what he's been up to. There is so
much good and wonderful wrapped up in that package, and I can't wait for
WLS to set it free. Next we crashed Chan's wife Felicia's work place
and pestered her for a few minutes. She introduced us to her coworkers
as her's and Chan's friends from the support group. Almost brought a
tear to my eye since I've never actually had any one publicly
acknowledge I was their friend before. It was great to see her too.
She spilled the beans about Chan's sippy cup, but y'all will have to pry
the info out of him. It's a top secret sippy cup combo, so y'all start
pestering the heck out of him to tell us all about it.
After a potty break (2 for Wes), we both pointed our mighty Dodges South
and headed fer home. Tony and Pam were at the hospital along with
Rona's parents, doing the "waiting game" too.
I got to explain some of the pictures... I renamed them so you can
decipher the file name and you might be able to tell what was going on.
We were showing off our battle scars and I had my shirt pulled up
doing a "Robin" and Lisa said "Hey Tim, there's a lady over there
staring at you". Well, that's all it takes usually, so I grabbed my
nipple and gave it a playful little squeeze, but I never saw the lady.
And no, I'm neither pre, nor post op. Just a few too many Big Macs and
way to many hours sitting in front of this computer. So, with that
said... Here's the pictures.
Tim.

Update on Rona

2007-03-14 10:09:25

Just wanted to let you know she is doing good. She got out of
surgery somewhere between 5 and 5:30, We got to see her around 6:45
or so. She was really out of it, she would come to long enough for
you to talk to her and then back of to dream land. Hopefully
tomorrow she will be more awake, but the best thing for her now is to
sleep. So if everyone could just pray for a speedy recovery.
When we were going down the hall to see her we found Dave up walking
the halls and he had already been in to see her, no fair he got the
first peak of her. It was good to see him up and moving though.
Thank you all for the prayers for Rona today.

CS 2002 - The calm before the storm...

2007-03-13 17:32:49

I actually have the day off today. Of course I didn't know that until
9:am this morning or we would have been eating breakfast at MCE with the
Ronettes. Glad to hear Dave is over here on this side now! Yea Dave!
Hadn't heard a word about Rona so far.
I took the opportunity to recoup my lost mattress time, so I'm just now
getting things moving, but, Joy and I are heading out to the Whistle
Stop Restaurant for a late lunch, then we're off to find a nice quite
park to frolic in.
I have been too pooped to post the pictures I have been getting the past
two days, but it is fun to watch this mega event materialize around you.
Thursday will be a backbreaker for us old (but handsome and
debonair) guys as we loose our "slave labor" highschool students as they
study for their finals. And then there is FRIDAY... Friday is the
"got-to-finish" day, well could be "night" too. We have until 8AM
Saturday to finish all our stuff. And the closer to Saturday we get,
the harder it is for me to do my job because there are more and more
people/venders on "site" that I have to maneuver a really big truck
around.
There are other groups that are a part of the contractor group that
makes all of this happen besides the bunch I work with. I think the
electrical group got the axe this year because they switched over to
individual generators that eliminates a lot of the wiring that has been
strung before. Great for us, they shared our warehouse. Then there is
the fence guys, the tent guys, the sign guys and so on. We all work
different schedules, and a lot of them work their regular customers
during the day, and then do the CS2002 work at night, so it's not
uncommon for us to come in at 9:AM and not be able to get to our stages
because of "new" fencing or 100 tents that weren't there when we left
the night before.
Gotta run and chase Joy down, too much energy!
Tim.

Joy and I had a slight scheduling conflict tonight between eating dinner
with Ronna and the rest of the clowns, and attending our son Matt's
"Honors" ceremony. We chose to squeeze in both. And as usual, "Mr.
Camera" tagged along to capture the moment of friends in fellowship. I
lieu of my usual naration, I played with some new software I got the
other day and tried out what seems to be a very excellent "captioning"
feature and added my own version of what was happening at the moment the
pictures were shot.
Now I gotta tell you, those that are easily offended might choose not to
scroll on down to see the pictures, some of the images captured tonight
are extremely graphic and should not be viewed by heart patients and/or
small children. With that warning in place...

Upcoming surgeries

2007-03-08 11:54:52

Hi all,
I just wanted to take a moment and address everyone
having surgery in the upcoming weeks. There are so
many of you!!!
I know this is a scary yet exciting time for you. It
seems like only yesterday I was in your shoes but yet
I am already at the 5 month mark. It really is true
that time flies when you are having fun.
This is not an easy journey but the hard part for
those that are pre-op is the wait. Yes the surgery is
painful, yes you will fill like the dickens for a
short while. Yes some of you may even go thru the
dreaded "what in the world have I done to myself"
(thank God I skipped that stage!). Please if I can't
help you know anything else please, please let me try
to impart to you---IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT.
People tell us when we are morbidly obese that we
should "love ourselves" and "be comfortable in our own
skin". Well, hopefully we all "love ourselves" because
we should. God loves us, our families love us so we
should love ourselves, irregardless of size. But
folks, all of us who have stared morbid obesity in the
face know there is NOTHING comfortable about this
size!!! This is about our health, our comfort (mental
or physical or both!), our future!
Someone made the comment at some time or another that
"nothing tastes as good as thin feels". I have to say
that I agree. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy
yummy food anymore. Trust me, my taste buds didn't
have surgery. LOL!! It's just that this tool allows me
to have good sense and exercise judgement in choices
and portion control and the weight loss allows me to
have a level of physical activity that didn't exist
even in my thin days (believe or not those days do
exist in my way distant past!)
Thank you all for letting me commiserate. I wish
everyone a safe and successful journey. You are all in
my prayers daily!

FUNNY!

I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did! Have a
great week! Joy
Evils of WLS no one wants you to know...
That's right, I'm talking about those untold, hidden
"side-effects" of life after WLS. Those of you who are
pre-op had better not read on, as your dream of a
happy life may get punctured. While it's true many
things improve after your health returns, some things
we take for granted and have become accustomed to get
pulled out from under our feet. For example: (1)
Housework. When I was huge, my wife never asked me
help around the house. I guess she was afraid I was
going to have a Heart Attack if I tried to vaccum the
Living Room. Shoot, I didn't even have to take out the
trash. I used to spend all my time in front of the TV.
Well, now she's got me working like a dog. I might as
well wear an apron all weekend. (2) Yardwork. My
definition of Yardwork used to be whipping out my
wallet to pay some 12 year old kid to do it for me.
Now she's got me out in the hot sun trying to keep up
with the neighbor's yard. You know, Lawn Mowers
sounded much less annoying from the comforts of my
Lazy-Boy. (3) Privacy. When I was big, I always had a
seat to myself on buses and trains. Who in their right
mind wanted to squeeze in next to me. Well, that
doesn't happen anymore. Not only do I always share,
but my "neighbor" seems to always want to bring a
burger and fries with them. It's a wonder I haven't
murdered someone. My "mug shot" would show me with
Ketchup dripping down my chin. (4) Wardrobe. I used to
never spend money on clothes. I hate shopping, and
what was the point anyway?? Even if I wore the latest
fashions, nobody noticed - all they saw was "fat".
Well, now my wife wants to "show me off" all the time.
She's got me in stores that have names I can't even
pronounce. If this keeps up, I'm going to need a
second job!! (5) Bedtime. I used to sleep through the
night without interruption. My CPAP was purring, and I
slept like a baby. My wife never bothered me. Well,
now she's waking me up at all hours demanding
"attention". I guess when I was big, I was about as
sexy as a Michelin tire. She's acting as if I'm going
to add 150 pounds next week, and this is her "window
of opportunity". (6) Fathering. If I was watching a
ball game on TV, I never got disturbed by my kid. If
she tried to ask me to go play with her, my wife would
come to my rescue saying "Honey, your Daddy is
(busy/tired/some other lame excuse) right now. Go play
by yourself." Now, I hardly watch TV at all, unless
it's Cartoon Network. I've lost track of the pennant
races, but I can tell you "The Powerpuff Girls
rule!!!". (7) Buffet Restaurants. Talk about
frustration. While everyone else is "enjoying"
themselves, I'm pretending to enjoy a piece of fish
that had sat under a heat lamp so long it had turned
into rubber. No butter; no ketchup; no flavor. Worse
yet, I'm actually satisfied after this pathetic meal.
If I want to sample everything, I get maybe 5 grams
per dish, tops. So, I'm warning you - life after WLS
is not always everything it's cracked up to be. Jeez,
I need a vacation... ALONE!!! Disgruntledly yours,
Kevin

was told( by doctors) I would never have children. Well God knows
best. Anyway his name is Joseph and he will be in the 11th grade at
Clay-Chalkville. My baby is 6'1 and weighs 210.

City Stages 2002 buildup is underway...

2007-03-04 13:44:44

Day 2! I'm still alive enough to type! HOT-HOT-HOT! By mid afternoon,
I was taking handfuls of ice and holding them on my head with one hand
while I worked with the other just trying to keep my brain from
overheating. Today we started assembling all the tons of wood and block
we "set out" yesterday. Looks like we're doing ALL of the stages in
Lynn Park. We built a 40 x 40 platform that covers the flower bed in
the front of City Hall in Lynn Park, started assembling the "kiddy"
stage out of the steel I-Beams, assembled two different side stages, and
painted EVERYTHING! I'm pooped, my left arm quit working about an hour
ago, here's the pictures!

City Stages 2002 is in the road!

2007-03-03 23:22:41

Well, I survived Day 1! Good bunch of kids, working their butts off,
for you. Me, I never had a butt to begin with, matter of fact, I had to
borrow the neighbor's butt whenever there was a butt kicking just to
make sure I had one and didn't show up empty butted. We got all of the
"hard/heavy" stuff out of the warehouse today while everyone was fresh
and the "new" guys were still trying to show the "old" guys they had
plenty of muscle (they didn't). For example, we moved 50, 24 foot long
8 inch STEEL "I-Beams" out of the warehouse, onto the trucks, out of the
trucks and onto the sidewalks of downtown Birmingham. Each one weighs
300 pounds and each and every one was moved by hand. 10 guys per beam,
so that works out to be about 30 pounds each (thereticaly). And, let's
see what else did we move into place today... 200 concrete blocks,
200-20 foot 4x4's, 250-3/4" plywood, a couple of hundred 20 foot 2x4's,
100 or so 4x8 foot stage sections and 10 of the huge bleacher sections.
We dropped one of the bleacher sections on a guys hand last year and
let's just say there were enough broken bones to qualify for "crushed".
He had several surgeries, some rehab, and is back working with us
again this year with the only difference being he's a little faster at
moving his hands when we hollar "DOWN"!
Our little outfit hasn't forgotten the females either, and I think two
join up with us tomorrow. I worked with both last year and allthough we
try to pamper them, they usually pull more than their share of the work
willingly.
Tomorrow we start the "assembling" of all of the above mentioned pieces
into what will become known to you as things like "The Coke" Stage",
"The Sampler Stage", "The Dance-O-Rama" Stage", and quite a few more.
If you cruise the downtown streets tomorrow or next week, all the
"stuff" you see will be ours. We hit the streets first, and last. And
for those of you that are interested in watching all of this come
together, just check out the pictures below.
Tim.

Question for nuses or those w/medical experience

2007-03-03 16:55:01

Do any of you know how to interpret lab results as it
relates to pap smears? I got copies of my medical
records from my GYN and have questions about something
I saw on my lab results for my pap. Please e-mail me
directly, as this may be kind of personal! :-)

Questions for post-ops

2007-03-03 12:25:56

I was wondering something--how do you handle going out
to eat at different stages post-op?
I was also wondering about keeping weight off after
surgery long-term. Do any of you know how likely this
is? I'm sure it's a good percentage, but I was just curious.

I hope everyone will allow me a moment to do what
mother's do best and brag on one of my children. Matt,
our 17 year old will graduate from high school this
year. Tonight was the Thespian banquet where the
theatre students are honored for a job well done this
year, the senior theatre students are honored for
their tenure while the younger ones are encouraged to
keep working at their dreams. The theatre awards are
given at the banquet and include funny awards, student
voted awards and departmental awards. The departmental
awards are recognized again on Honor's Night.
Matt received 8 awards tonight. The funny awards he
received were-Best Kiss, Cutest stage couple and
Sexual Identity Crisis (he played a female in several
rolls, very funny!!). The student voted awards he
received were Best Supporting Actor, Best All-Around
Theatre Person, All Star Technical Crew.
The Dept awards were chosen by the Dept of Theatre
Director Roy Hudson. 6 kids received a new
award-Theatre Superlative and their names will grace a
plaque in the Theatre lobby. This award was for
dedication and committment to the dept and Matt was a
recipient.
The final award was the Dorothy Walker Award For
Excellence in Theatre. This goes to a senior who has
been in the program for 4 years and has given their
all to the department. Matt was this years recipient.
Dorothy Walker was my 10th grade English teacher and I
loved her dearly. She found the Thespian Society at
Shades Valley and was committed to it. She retired in
1978 and with her retirement the Thespian Society also
went into retirement until 1995 when Roy Hudson came
to the school and resurected the Dept and the Thespian
Society. This award has much personal sentiment to me
and is a coveted one within the school and the Theatre
Dept. Matt has truly ate, slept and breathed Theatre
for 4 years and is blessed to have a full 4 yr
scholarship to UAB to major in Theatre Arts. I am so
proud of him and just had to share this. Thank you for
allowing me to do so.
Love,
Joy

Updates on a couple of folks....

2007-03-02 01:54:16

Hi Pals,
Two patients have asked me to post and let you know how they're doing........
Laura Colley is in room 661 at MCE. She had to have two hernias repaired this
week. She's doing well but was in alot of pain when I saw her. I know having
to have this surgery is discouraging to her so you might want to give her a call
to cheer her up. Michelle Hagan and I visited her for a while this morning and
she looks great but is disappointed about this setback.
Vickie Hildebrand had her surgery yesterday and is doing FABULOUS! She is in
SICU because her surgery was a revision but is talking, watching TV and looking
very good. She's hoping to go to a regular room later today or in the morning.
She said to tell everyone that she's doing GREAT!
Well, that's about it. I just wanted to pass on this info since Vickie and
Laura asked me to let everyone know.
Happy Weekend,
Rona

City Stages work starts today...

2007-03-01 21:58:34

For those of you that are avid City Stages fans, you can now start the
drooling and heavy breathing. Today marks the first official workday
and I get the privilege of selecting and picking up the trucks that will
do the hauling as we begin removing the ticket booths and "local" stages
that have been sleeping quietly since last year. The actual "work" will
kick off at 9:AM Saturday morning. We should have enough "redwood"
(official City Stages paint scheme) strewn about the downtown proper by
Monday morning that it will leave no doubt that the fun is almost here.
If any of you care to venture to the "City Center" (what bonehead coined
that phrase) this weekend, just look for the big trucks as we try our
best not to run over anyone. I'll be the cool looking "old dude" behind
those Foster Grants, and I usually wear my "living traffic cone" neon
orange t-shirt so people can see us a little better as we block roads as
we unload/load the tons of plywood and 4x4's that we construct the local
stages out of. Both of mine and Joy's Sons will be working with us this
year, so that will be cool for me. I love watching my children work and
interact with others as "adults". It's kinda like a living report card,
and I'm the one being graded!
Joy and I will check out of the "love shack" in a few hours and she'll
drop me off to get the trucks on the way home, and aside from tonight's
Thespian Banquet, and Honors Night on Monday, I probably won't see her
for the next 15 days or so. Oh, we'll be in the same bed every night,
but I doubt if either of us will know the other is there. I will be
sore, sunburned and probably injured in some capacity by the time I get
home every night, so unless she's applying cold packs, Band-Aids or
horse liniment to my butt, I'll be off in my own little mental world
soon after arriving home.
Tim.

I'll be at MCE for next rotation!

2007-03-01 13:43:24

Hey, folks! I will be at MCE for my next clinical
rotation. I will spend part time with post-op folks,
and part time with seniors in rehab. I hope some of
my clinical days coincide with your stays so I can
come say 'hi'! ~Sandy

something neat happened

2007-03-01 07:53:18

I've been dieting since right before I joined this
list, and I've dropped some poundage. My rings fit
again, and my pants are all loose. But that's not
what this email is about. Here is the neat thing. I
didn't get to eat today because I left in a hurry and
didn't have lunch change, so I want to the Purple
Onion Cafe (at UAB) to get an order of cheese fries,
my favorite. When I went up to the register I lost
all control and I ordered TWO orders of cheese fries
with extra cheese, and a big turkey sandwich. When
the waiter brought my food, it was on three dinner
plates. I was so embarrassed. He said, in a Spanish
accent, "Ma'am, I take back and you get one big
plate?" I said no, and he went away. I was ready for
my binge. I ate half the sandwich and a few fries and
I felt stuffed, and I didn't feel like eating the rest
of it. Now, the usual me could pig on for a couple
hours, but my stomach has shrunk down and I felt truly
satisfied after what was a prudent amount. Why is
this neat? Because it shows me I CAN, I CAN, I CAN DO
THIS DIET POST OP!!!!!! I have been worried that I
would not be able to not binge, but today I was able
to stop myself, and in fact, I didn't wish to binge,
and felt stuffed. It was worth the $13 for this
lesson. I am ready to say 'bye' to huge volumes of
food. I'm ready for the surgery. It is just a matter
of time :). I can get all the way down to 250 and
still get the surgery, so I will keep on a-trying.
Thanks for your attention :). Somehow, I think you
guys will understand. I like talking to others who
are/have been/ morbidy obese. I imagine that you have
all been in a similar place at sometime, and you
aren't snickering at me while reading the email.
Here, noboday says, "why can't you just put downt he
fork?". I'm glad to be here, and I'm looking forward
to meeting any of you in person at the next meeting!
~Sandy
