Hi everyone!

appointment on Thursday and I now have a date. I will have my surgery
on March 19, at Carraway with Dr. Laws performing the surgery. Any

appreciated.

I would not recommend pigging out before surgery, in fact its best to lose a
little weight according to my Dr. When they go in (laparoscopy) a lot of
people have fatty livers and it is hard for them to maneuver around those
livers to get to what they need to do, when you lose weight, you lose it from
the inside out, around the abdominal cavity which is better for you and your
surgeon. We are already Morbidly obese, why complicate the matter, you want
to be in the best shape you can for surgery. That is why it is also good to
exercise too. Just my opinion, and advise I followed which had me out of the
Hospital in 3 days, no drains and feeling pretty good.
Thanks, Louise
Hello, I was at my 12 week on Jan.25,2003. I went to the Dr. office
on Jan.22,2003 and found out that to this day I have lost 110 lb.
since my surgery. I have been eating mainley turkey, chicken, tuna, and
veggies. When I went to the Dr. I asked her if I could start eating
salads. She said yes so I have had a small garden salad for lunch
w\Kraft Free Zesty Italian dressing it has the lowest carbs then any
other dressing perserving that I have found. My surgery was on
Oct.25,2002 I've went from a size 12 in a ring to a 10,and I went
from a mans size 10 in shoes to a 8 1\2. I feel so much better then I
have in a very long time. But I don't think my Mother likes it to
well because instead of her getting my old cloths that are to small
for me I can ware her cloths, I've went from a 6-7X in sweats to a
3X, and now I can raid her closet instead of her raiding mine God I
love this!!!!! Well my hubby just call and needs me to pick him up
from work so I'll let you all go but good luck to all of you!! God
bless Teresa from IN.
Has anyone read any of the books offered at the WLS
site? If so, which would you recommend?
are my emails not going to yalls boxes caus eive sent everal emails and have not received any replies
Are there any peps that have had the surgery done in Rochester,NY?
I would like to talk to you about it. I am thinking about haveing it
done and would like more info. thanks
Hi,
I am brand new to this news group. I am going through Duke Hospital
and will hopefully get to have the lap gastric bypass. However,
since we know I have hepatitis C, they are sending me to a liver
specialist to make sure my liver is healthy enough for the surgery.
(I see the specialist on Wednesday, Jan 29th.)
Just wondering if any of you know of anyone who had Hep C who has
had the surgery? If so, were there special problems? (By the way,
previous liver biopsies - the last one in 1998 - showed only problem
with liver was "chronic hepatitis C and fatty liver". My doctor
recommended weight loss.)
Thanks,
Carol
Hey everyone, here is a site I think you should all check out. For those of you that are pre op and are getting nervous or worried and for those of us that are post op that wants a little reassurance. Bring your tissues. www.bigpete803.com
HELLO,
I AM A MALE CURRENTLY ABOUT 265 LBS, 41 YRS OLD,AND IN VERY GOOD
HEALTH.HAVE BEEN TO WEIGHT WATCHERS MULTIBLE TIMES, AND ALSO FAILED
AT OPTIFAST. I LOST WEIGHT AROUND 1986 (ABOUT 100 LBS) AND WAS ABLE
TO KEEP IT OFF 10 + YRS, NOW I'M BACK UP. NEW TO THIS GROUP FULL OF
QUESTIONS. ANYONE FROM CENTRAL KENTUCKY HAD EXPERIENCE WITH THE
GEORGETOWN HOSPITAL AND BYPASS PHYSICAN?
DOES ANY ONE HAVE BLUEGRASS FAMILY HEALTH INSURANCE, AND WHAT HOOPS
DID YOU HAVE TO JUMP THRU TO GET APPROVAL.
I was wondering how your families react to the changes in the food
that you prepare. I know that I am not going to cook two different
meals......one that I can eat and one loaded with fat and sugar for
everyone else. Also how did you all give up soda? That is a big
thing for me, I drink diet but I really like it. Also my husband
drinks a lot of soda and I know I will be tempted but I won't want
that pain so maybe that will help. Do you think that people treat
you differently because you had WLS instead of "going on a diet and
exercising?" I would love to see the people who suggest that try it
but ya know.
Teresa
I was sitting here this morning making my daughter breakfast and I
got to thinking. I am going to have to change the way I eat and
live. This means I will change the way I cook and be setting a
better example for my child. By having this surgery done so early in
her life am I a saving her from a life where food controls her and
she obese by the time she is in the sixth or seventh grade. Will she
be able to see old pictures of me and then see me after I have lost
all the weight and know that I look and feel better without the extra
pounds? I pray that I can save her from the life that most of the
women in my family have led. Any thoughts?????????/
hello my name is jennifer and i to am waiting to go to my first appointment which will be on the 31 of this month. i already did the group that you have to go to before your first appointment. i live in missouri and i am going to a doctor ali is anyone else in the group around this way. and for the post op people what kind of results have you had.....
Is it true that you can never have more than two ounces of food after your surgery for the rest of your life? Also can you have cheese?
I HAD 2 EMAILS TONIGHT THAT HAD VIRUSES. I ONLY HAD TO OPEN THE FIRST ONE AND IT DOWNLOADED AUTOMATICALLY.
DON'T OPEN ANYTHING FROM ME WITH A DOWNLOADABLE FILE ATTACHED. I DO NOT SEND ANY.

Hi all, I am new here. I signed up for the surgery back last April, but
due to distance to doctor I missed too many appointments so he dropped me.
I had gone through the Psych and Nutritional eval, so hope I can cut the
process short next time (if there is a next time). Actually, things may
have worked out for the best as I learned later that the Doctor I chose was
not especially good and many of his patients either died or had to have
another surgeon correct his mistakes.
I am currently looking into the procedures again and trying to find a doctor
who will take Medicare as the sole payment. I think it would be easier to
find a Doctor to do it free.
About a month ago I heard about a surgery that is similar to the R-N-Y (or
whatever) but instead of creating a pouch and re-routing the Small intestine
the stomach is stapled along the long side to form a cigar shape, keeping
the pyloric valve intact. This is supposed to reduce the side effects of
the pouch and stoma. The small intestine is still shortened as needed.
Does anyone have any info on this surgery? I lost my bookmark and now can't
find the information again. Due to several previous surgeries, Lap is
probably not an option for me and this seems less traumatic than most other
Gastric surgeries.
Also, how much exercise is required after the surgery? I have severe back
and arthritis so movement is very limited, although I can walk about 5-10
feet at a time if the pain pills are good enough.
Thanks for any help.
Also, for all the people going in for surgery I have a tip. Most of the
time you are required to cough a lot after surgery to keep the lungs
functioning properly and keep fluid from building up. After stomach surgery
this can be very painful. I found by trial-and-error that holding your bed
pillow over your stomach, crossing your arms over it and pulling in toward
your stomach gently as you cough helps a lot and reduces the pain to almost
nothing. The amount of arm pressure you use depends on how much you can
apply without hurting your new stitches while still lessening the pain.
Hope this helps.
Also, best of luck for the short-timers, will be waiting to hear results and
what to expect.
Thanks again,
Rudy
Does anyone know if the Herbalife protein drink is a
suitable post-op choice? Any other suggestions re:
protein drinks and other groceries or other items I
will need post-op will be greatly appreciated.
I WAS approved will have DS in JUly Pray for me
GOD bless all!!!
My wife had Gastric Bypass done on Mon 1/13 this evening she took a
shower, dried off and got dressed, she had a small cough and a
reddish/clrae fluid started drippimg from her incision. Seh has no
fever, there is no reddness around the incision, and the fluid has no
odor. Has this happened to anyone else?
How long did you have to wait before you had the surgery after your first meeting?
I have been waiting three months for my first appointment with the doctor. I have been pigging out, knowing that I will not be able to eat the things I'm use to eating. Well, my first meeting has been snowed out. They have rescheduled for next month. I was just like a kid at Christmas. I was ready to get the ball rolling.
Did y'all pig out before your first appointment? Or should I watch what I eat now?
sorry about the last email about the maltese it was sent to the wrong group

Hi
I just joined. I'm scheduled for surgery Febrary 7th at Boston's New
England Medical Center. I can't wait to read allthe back posts and
get all the info i can. I'm getting really nervous. And i really
don't know why. I'm very excited to get it done. And all the
doctor's say is that since i had an emergency C-section for my second
daughter 4 years ago, it will be a lot like that.
Sugar free fudgecicles are yummy too. and highly recommended by my
nutritionist team.
I'm psyched to have found this group. I'm only 4'11" and around 200
lbs. but that is over 100 more than i should be with my tiny bone
structure. So i kind of feel funny though when tlking about it to
some people who have way more weight to lose, even though the
percentage is the same. ( i do just barely qualify b the hospital
standards for initial consultation, but after my interviews and
initial medical analysis, i have been assured that I more than meet
requirements)
Thanks for listening. I'll be reading away.
hi all i just wanted you all to know that i was approved
for the duodenal switch procedure in which my pyloric
valve will stay intact hence no dumping syndrome
hoorah!!!!
I get Straight MA no Hmo STuff no 10,000 dollar cap
so i got approved in minnesota!!
My insurance will not cover any part of the WLS, although my doctor will
probably help me get the pre-screen/tests done. I have enough other health
concerns to justify them.
Has anyone out there found a good way to finance self pay? I am thinking
about trying to refinance my house if needs be.
Thank you for any input.
Welcome to our happy little group Brian. I am waiting
to hear from the surgeon's office so I can have my
first appt with them so we can get the stuff with the
insurance company rolling. I have a 2 year old little
girl and I chose to do this for her so I would have
the energy to run and play with her like I want to and
so I can live a long and happy life. Good luck. How
old are your children?

nervous. Any last minute tips would be great!

I saw a doctor on The View this morning from a consumer protection group discussing doctors and malpractice. I think that the site would be important for all of my friends and people that I know, so I am including the link. It is:
www.questionabledoctors.org
It only includes 27 states, I believe and the site explains how it does it's reporting.

Obviously, I need to forward an explanation to all the groups that I sent the original email to. Sorry if you have a problem with information.

I have been reading the stories on the website and a lot of the
things that these people are dying from could be caused by any other
surgery in the world. It just happened that it was after WLS that
there problems came to light. Some of these people were probably
doing things that they were not supposed to be doing in the first
place. I think this site is just set up to scare people. I keep
noticing the same Dr. and same hospitals mentioned in each article so
I don't think this is the norm. This is one ladies way of trying to
make problems.
Teresa
Thanks everyone for your great information. I will talk to my dr.
the next time I see her and see what would be best for me for my
rash. Frank thanks for explaining IR. My Dr. mentioned glucophage
and then I mentioned WLS and she didn't say another word about it.
Teresa
I am from Bakersfield CA, near Fresno, and I have a friend there that says that there is a group of surgeons who will perform this surgery on anyone..............even people wanting to lose 50 lbs. of baby fat. It is sad that they are doing this to make money, and not being more careful. I do think this is a last option, but one that thankfully is there for us. Do the research, become informed and find a good reputable surgeon! I am ready to go!

OK. OK. Has anyone besides me read this horrific document? Somebody posted the link several days ago. I sat up until 1:30 am reading. Now this article appears to be anywhere between 10-13 years old. So I am assuming that it's premises are not current. But these 3 groups have a combined membership of over 500 people. I was not looking for any horrible post surgery war stories and don't put a lot of stock in things I read on the Internet. Time has taught me to not do that. However, still being pre-op I would be most assured at hearing some comments from the post-ops on this subject.
Susan
You should go to AMPLESTUFF.COM
Amplestuff Online
and request a catalogue. They do not sell via the web. But they have a booklet on hygiene (even though that is not the problem) that will address this issue with rashes and also they sell a Betadine Cleanser that will take care of the problem most likely. You need to stay dry, and cornstarch is a no no...........it may help *feed* the rash. I only had this one time but it was so awful (and I had it only in a very small area) that I wanted to make sure it never came back. One suggestion I remember is to put something absorbent ( clean towel strips) in the folds of skin where you get the rash. Until you get the book and cleanser, try some hydrogen peroxide, and KEEP DRY. God bless you, I hope this helps.
yeast infection but I don't know for sure what it is. I know that it
is very painful. It starts out as small red dots and soon spreads
becoming a solid sheet of infection. It gives off a discharge and
horrible smell. I get it on the folds of my belly, under my breasts,
in my belly button and under my arms. I bathe daily so I know it is
not because I am dirty or because of any soaps. I use a blow dryer
on the sensitive areas and then put baby powder with cornstarch on it
to try and control moisture. Even this does not help sometimes.

Well all I went to the Dr. today. I am insulin resistant and have
high blood pressure. I also meet the other criteria because I have
sleep apnea and joint problems. I told my dr. that I wanted to have
WLS and she was super suportive. I let her know that I had been
researching it and was on these online lists and she said that was
good. She gave me the referal to a surgeon in Columbia, SC and I
should be hearing from him by Friday. I called my insurance company
and all they need is a letter of medical necessity and the surgeons
stuff and then it only takes 10-15 days for them to decide. Keep
your fingers crossed or pray or whatever you do that I soon be x
amount of time pre-op. I am excited and a bit scared at the same
time but I want to be healthy and live to see my baby grow up so I
think it will be worth it.
Crossing Finger, toes, and send lots of prayers.

I had a doctor tell me when I was pregnant with my baby that it was a
yeast infection but I don't know for sure what it is. I know that it

horrible smell. I get it on the folds of my belly, under my breasts,

not because I am dirty or because of any soaps. I use a blow dryer
on the sensitive areas and then put baby powder with cornstarch on it
to try and control moisture. Even this does not help sometimes. It
can be very embarassing and I have even gotten fired from one job and
quit one job because of it. It can make working in a close
environment very difficult. If you don't have this thank God because
it is awful.

Hello everyone..... my name is sinna and I am in Virginia. I am
waiting to have my surgery any day, just waiting on the office to
call me for my appointment.
anyways on to my question:
I am in search of the Gastric bypass awareness lapel pin/ribbon
it looks like a tape measure folded in the loop (like the aids pins
and breast cancer pins)
does anyone have ANY idea where I may find them to buy... I want one
for myself.. but I also work at a hospital that is searching for them
also... to give to their patience when they have the surgery.
thanks for all your help

Hi everyone, after a little while lurking I thought I'd "come out" and say
hello.
My name is Sian (pronounced Sharn), and I'm 42, female and live in South
Wales, UK.
A brief(ish) history - normal weight baby, then within 18 months was gaining
weight way out of proportion to my food intake (subsequently it appears I
had some sort of inherited diabetes which didn't get diagnosed at the time).
Usual story to many of you - continued to gain weight hand over fist,
bullied at school, although I was reasonably intelligent, once I was working
and earning my own money, food was much more easily obtainable and the
binging began in earnest.
Various diet failures, fad diet sheets, slimming clubs, powders, shakes, you
know the score. Eventually had to give up work due to both physical and
mental health problems. Of course, then shut myself away and ate even more,
becoming virtually housebound.
In July 1999 I had a Swedish gastric band fitted by Alberic Fiennes in
London. Struggled almost from the word go - I fought against the
restriction at every opportunity. I lost about 80lb in 18 months (about 1/3
of my excess weight) before the binging returned with a vengence, I ate
round the band, stretched my pouch and started to put on weight.
We (me, surgeon and team psych) came to the conclusion that I panicked at
losing the weight, at the increased attention even though I was still obese
and my reaction was to "sabotage" my band and go back to my previous state
(better the devil you know).
I subsequently had a lap R'N'Y in London last July. The op had a hitch, I
developed a leak and had a couple of crises during recovery. About 6 weeks
later I had a pulmonery embolism that required emergency treatment. By this
time I was wondering why on earth I'd put myself through all this as I had a
small weight loss the first month after surgery, then nothing for two
months. (But quite a big loss the 6 weeks leading up to surgery).
However, I am now losing steadily, not the huge amounts in rapid time that
some report (which scare me to be frank), but I think that I am the sort of
person who needs time to adjust mentally to the process of becoming a
different person, and being treated differently by others, both friends and
strangers.
Something I've noticed - having been on lists for both the band and the
bypass - is that the main pre-op worries for US patients seem to be post-op
pain and the mortality rate, whilst for UK patients it's losing the capacity
to eat any food they want and how quickly they can lose the weight. (I'm
certainly not saying that these concerns are exclusive to one continent or
the other BTW, just the way it appears from the people I've had contact
with).
The only thing I would say with regard to the first is that as a morbidly
obese person my lifespan was almost certainly being drastically curtailed,
and what I did have left was going to be painful as my joints and vital
organs gave up the fight to support my weight. I was scared of the op, I
didn't want to die, but if it was to happen during surgery at least I'd done
everything I could to help myself.
As for the second, I hope that everyone has some access to counselling as
well as these fantastic lists, coz it is a major mental change as well and
sometimes our friends and familes don't understand that part. As my surgeon
said in my initial consultation - I can help you lose weight, but I can't
make your life perfect or guarantee you happiness.
OK, you can all wake up now, I'm going back to lurkdon. LOL
Sian
I just found out that my Insurance Company will not pay for gastric
bypass or any other weight reduction surgery. I feel like the rug
was just pulled out from under me. Apparently the policy I have
from work does not include any weight reduction surgery. I have been
through all the tests and all that goes with that. Has anyone had
this same problem and has been able to convince their insurance
company to pay?
I was all ready and now feel really stuck...
Thanks for any advise...

For anyone interested, this is the link to read about the judges ruling on McDonald's making Fat Children. Interesting reading and a must if you have kids.
Does anyone have any regrets about having had the RNY surgery done?
Finally I got my surgery date on Feb 11th. I am excited, but a
little nervous at the same time.
What are some things that I should take to the hospital, will they
let me wear my own gown?
What are some things to eat to stay hydrated in those first few months
also, are there any support groups in upstate New York in the
vicinity of Middletown?
Thanks,
Diana
Well, the day has arrived! Yesterday I received a letter from my
insurance company saying that the surgery has been approved.
You would think I would be happy, but instead I cried all night! What
is WRONG with me?
I called BTC this AM to see about scheduling and ran into some
more "red tape".
Does anyone know how long it takes until someone will schedule
surgery after the insurance company has approved the claim?
Why am I so upset? Am I CRAZY?

Hi,
It's difficult for me to keep up with the huge volume of e-mails,
that's what makes this list so great, it's so active!
I know you all talk about protein powders, shakes, bars, etc., can
you send me via e-mail the names of the best protein shakes, bars,
powders, etc., so you don't have to re-clog up the list with
repetitive stuff.
I, too, am having a problem with hair loss. Will be going for my 1st
consultation for the surgery next week.
Thanks!
hi, i'm new at this i had my surgery on 12-26-02 this thursday will

Hello everyone..... my name is sinna and I am in Virginia. I am
waiting to have my surgery any day, just waiting on the office to
call me for my appointment.
anyways on to my question:
I am in search of the Gastric bypass awareness lapel pin/ribbon
it looks like a tape measure folded in the loop (like the aids pins
and breast cancer pins)
does anyone have ANY idea where I may find them to buy... I want one
for myself.. but I also work at a hospital that is searching for them
also... to give to their patience when they have the surgery.
thanks for all your help
sinna
Greetings :)
I am new to this group and am thinking about this surgery. Am
absolutely terrified at the thought of pain as well as any
complications that might arrise from the surgery. According to the
research there is about a 1 to 2 percent death rate due to the
surgery, and this is also, terrifying to me as this percentage seems
very high. I am 33 and weight about 350 lbs. Am in good health
although I do have asthma and am just getting over a 1 1/2 month
bout of bronchitis. Any thoughts? Also, can one have a child after
having this surgery? Do the staples/stitches eventually heal?
Many thanks for any and all feedback!
Caroline

Hello all. I am a 23 year old SAHM. I have a daughter who is going
to be 2 in April. I have decided that I want to have the surgery and
now have to go through the process with my doctor. She wanted me to
try xenical first but I feel that it would just be more wasted time
and money on something that is not going to work. I want to live to
a nice old age and see my daughter married and bounce my grandbabies
on my knees. I would like to get rid of this horrible infection I get
on my skin. I want to be able to go outside and really play with my
daughter without getting tired or winded. I would like to be able to
go to wal-mart and buy clothes without having to go to the largest
sizes they carry. The most important thing for me is feeling
better. I am tired of being tired all the time. Can anyone tell me
what to expect and what are some things I can start doing to make the
process a little easier. I am open to all suggestions. You can
email me at usafcowboyslady@..., I am on YIM as usafcowboyslady
and on AIM as SMSMommy040701. BTW we will live in South Carolina.
Thanks,
Teresa
I am about 6 weeks pre-op and was wondering if anyone knows of any
non doctor related support groups in the NYC area. I am interested
in meeting other pre and post op persons who are in the same boat.
Thanks for any info!
Mark
As you all know, after surgery we can only eat small amounts.
Resturants give HUGE portions which we take home. Believe me when I
say I have had more stryofoam in my house than I know what to do
with. That is why I liked going there. I would pay for a 5 year old
($2.75) and enjoy dinner with my friends who wanted to eat more.
They had a varaity of food to choose from and if something didnt
work, I didnt feel bad about it because i only served myself a few
bites.
But now Old Country Buffet (they have resturants all over the
country, go to www.buffet.com for listing) will not honor any WLS
surgury card given to you from your doctor for reduced price meals.
If you are a young person under 62 you can not order from
the 'senior' menu. I have shown my card at many places and have never
had a problem UNTIL NOW WITH OLD COUNTRY BUFFET.
So if any of you feel the same way, go to the website and drop them
a line. Or call them at 800/871-0956 or 800-7BUFFET. The 871 number
will get you a real person M-F during normal business hours.
Please help me change their policy on WLS patients. I really enjoy
the food there but paying $10 for a chicken leg and some low fat
sugar free vanilla soft serve (and it is good and doesnt cause
dumping in me!! :-)) is a bit much on the pocket book. Especially
since new clothes are much more important!!
Being out and in a social enviroment is part of our well being. We
are a part of society. And like it or not, We can take our business
and those of our friends and family elsewhere.
you all can reach me at biggirl_63@... if you have any
questions...
Thanks!!

Hello everyone,
Well I am 11 days pre-op and getting the jitters. I feel like
there is something that I am forgetting to do. Any suggestions on
things i need to do or take to the hospital? Thanks.
Ginger K.
My biggest anxiety before my surgery was how to get my backside
cleaned after taking a 'you know what'. I brought the big plastic
kitchen spoon and the proverbial back scratcher but I loathed the
idea of struggling with these things.
The solution I discovered was simple: you just ring for the nurse and
ask for assistance in cleaning yourself. I was surprised by how
accomodating they were about it.

hi,
i just got back from making the first step towards Getting this
surgery. My husband and I met with our doctor, he has to refer us to
the surgeon and we will have to drive a long way for that
appointment, since we live way out in the boonies!!! He was excited
that we came to him! he didn't say it exactly but he has been
thinking about it for my husband for a long time. He didn't feel like
it was his place to bring that up though LOL. I realize its early
but I am just so happy to get such a great response out of our doctor
and he said he will work with us and our insurance to get whatever we
Erica, so glad you came through your surgery so well, you are an
encouragement to me. I am going in tomorrow and feel a real peace, I know
God will see me through this and I appreciate the prayers of His saints!

I am new here and have been reading all of your posts and I just
love it I get online everyday just to see how people are doing.
So I would now like to get involved and I have a few questions. Well
I am now 5 weeks post op and have lost 43 pds but all of the sudden
the last 3 days no wt. loss how come? It scares me and I am not
eating very much. When I try and eat solids I throw up. I also want to
know if anyone is having trouble with gas. I have never had any
problems but now that's all I have is gas my tummy is bubbly all the
time??
Thanks a bunch and good wishes to you all.

Linda,
Where in Indiana are you? I am in NW Indiana, but I used to live in
Evansville as well.
I can relate to your fear. I do not even have insurance approval yet
and I cry every single day. I know what it is like to feel ashamed
and sad. That nurse that was mean to you should be shot! And God
bless the one who made you feel better.
I just keep trying to think how much happier and healthier I am going
to be as soon as the hard part is over with. Right now I am so
depressed I can bearly get out of bed and go to work in the morning.
I go home each night and I just want to get under the covers and hide
from everyone and everything.
I am crying just writing to you! Please keep in touch. If it helps
you to have a shoulder to lean on, then feel free to email me anytime
you like. Maybe we can get through this together....
Keep your chin up!

Now that the 'winds' have arrived, all the cramping has seemed to
disappear. That would be the last of my residual issues with the
operation. I never knew FARTING could be so therapuetic.

I see all kinds of information ( really good information) and ideas posted here, and I have no way to save ALL the emails. How about everyone sends me their advise/ideas about certain things and I will compile and post them so that everyone can SAVE them as just one email?
We can have the following different topics..............
1. Pre-op advise and lists of things to do and take to hospital
2. Post-op advise, ways to help with prevention of infection, etc.
3. Good recipes for protein shakes, etc.
Email me DIRECTLY at anniestamper@... and I will compile the information and post it.

This is what I think about...............
The surgery is dangerous, all surgeries are dangerous. But I have made a CHOICE to not let the fat kill me! I feel (for once) like I am in control. Remember, you most likely choose this option, so you are in control and everything will be alright! I would rather have made this decision, rather than getting really sick later with something else that I have NO CONTROL over.
My father died after a surgery (hip replacement) due to bad post care. He even lost 80 pounds before the surgery so he would be healthier going into it. As a result I am a little nervous, but knowing what I know, I also am going to make sure that I have good post care in the hospital. I will have someone with me all the time. That makes me feel better.
My date is in June and I am so anxious, it will be like a big birthday for me!

I am just starting this long process of fighting with the Insurance
company, and was wondering if anybody out there has heard of Dr.Emma
J. Patterson, with the Oregon Clinic in Portland Oregon?
I came home on the 4th day post op and believe me it is great to be
home. I had open bypass and I can't believe how good I feel. I am
very tired but that is to be expected. If anyone in the Denver area
is considering this procedure, Dr. Michael Snyder is da Man! So,
when does the wait come off?
Thanks to everyone on this site for the words of encouragement and
support.

I am scheduled for my surgery around the same time my period is to
begin. Is there a higher risk of a blood clot while on my menstral
cycle than if I were to have the surgery without being on my period?
I clot a lot while on my period and don't know if this is going to
have me at a higher risk of a clot in my lungs, legs, etc. This may
be a stupid question, but I'm a little paranoid. I have heard of
women who's periods took way longer than usual to stop after the
surgery because of them having the surgery while on their period.
Please advise!
I am having surgery in February, Does anyone self administer their B12 shots? What type of syringe do you use? I am not afraid of the insulin type needles but someone told me I had to use a 1 1/2 inch needle because it has to be intramuscular

Thanks for responding to my message so quickly. I found out the
next suport group at Lawrence Memorial is at 630p on 1/23/03. If
you're planning to attend, let me know so we can meet. It would be
good to have a familiar face to commiserate with post-op (but
hopefully not too much commiserating will be necessary!) In the
meantime, please feel free to contact me whenever you want. Donna

of us. We made an appointment to talk to our family doctor about it
on monday. I was wondering if you all could help me with questions
for him. Also are you all recieveing b12 shots? I do know of one guy
who had to get 2 a week and he was just miserable after the surgery
(a year later) so my hubby is worried about it. I am ready to jump
right on in!! LOL
Well gonna go now thanks you all for your help in advance
Hi everyone,
Well, I unsuscribed but now I'm back. I am 4 days shy of 8 months

would in a heartbeat.

click on "show photos". It's amazing still to me how much I've
changed.

After having my surgery Dec. 19^th, I got a stef infection discovered Jan. 12. I'm on antibiotics and my husband has to change the dressing three times a day. Did anyone else encounter this? I've lost 41 pounds to date, it's been almost a month. I was just curious how long it took to clear up. They had to open up the incision some to let it drain and it is very uncomfortable and painful once again. I'm just curious if anyone else encountered the problem and their experiences with it. It has me a little depressed and concerned.

I would like to tell everyone that I had a wonderful experience with my surgery. I actually had no pain after surgery, the nurses wanted to know why I wasn't using my morphine drip, but since I wasn't in pain I did't use it. I really lucked out, I did't need anything after I went home either. So please try not to worry, maybe you will be lucky too. Has anyone else done this? cindy
Does anyone know what the weight limit is for the

I am scheduled for gastric bypass surgery ( the traditional vs. the
laparoscopic procedure) but I have never had surgery before or been
in the hospital overnight for any other reason. I am looking for ad-
vice about what I should bring to the hospital with me ie., pajamas,
nightgowns, robe, slippers, toiletries, personal items, etc. Any
suggestions you may have I'm sure will be helpful. Thanks.
I am trying to prepare myself for surgery on February 21.. My doctor told me I should quit smoking, and I am diabetic..(I originally was scheduled for surgery for December but I did not get a response from the insurance company in time so I had to reschedule) I worry that I am not healthy enough to get the surgery, my sugars are high again and I am still smoking...has anyone had this surgery done with diabetes not perfectly controlled and being a smoker? My name is Ann, I live in Roanoke, Virginia, but was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. I was approved for the surgery last October, and will have it June 19. I delayed because I am a teacher and wanted to wait until summer vacation. It is getting very hard to wait! I would like to do it 6 months ago!
I am at 330 pounds, 5'5". I have no medical problems YET associated with the weight, but know they are coming if I do not lose it soon. I am 33 years old and hoping (fingers and toes crossed over here) that I can have a baby is a couple years after losing some weight. My infertility was disagnosed as inclusive and weight MAY have been the problem. I know the fertility drugs I took for 6 months made me gain another 120 pounds that I could never take off. I have two little boys that we adopted that are perfect, so if I do not get pregnant that will be fine too! :)
A lot of my weight is in the stomach area, so I have been told that I will have to have a tummy tuck after I lose it all too............anyone had to do that? I have learned a lot just from the few posts I have read, and am excited about my new journey to a NEW me!

Hi, my name is Melissa and I am a sahm to three boys ages 5,2 and 1.
I am currently weighing in at 280 pounds and I am 5'5. On Friday I
am going to meet with one of the surgeons at the BTC to see if I can
get a letter written up so my insurance will approve my surgery. I
am concerned that they wont since my only medical issue is my weight
which is high, I just had a physical two weeks ago and I fell within
the normal range for everything ealse. I have had two prior knee
surgeries several years ago which I am sure is linked with my weight
but beyond that, I am fairly healthy. I don't think of myself as
healthy and it scares me, because I want to be around for my kids.
Doing active activities with my kids is very hard and I so want to be
there for them and be able to participate in that side of there
life. I am tired of being tired all the time. I have tryed more
diets then I can count but always seem to not succeed. I was told
that my insurance company (BC BS- PPO )has one of the highest
acceptance letter rates but still scared because after doing all the
research I am sure that this is what is best for me. Well I will
love to hear everyone's stories thanks all for listening.

I HAD AN OPEN RNY ON OCTOBER 14TH. IT WAS VERY HARD AT FIRST.
PAINFUL AND MENTALLY HARD. I GOT DEPRESSED BECAUSE I ATE VERY
LITTLE. I WAS SO WORRIED AND SO WAS MY HUSBAND. BUT I KNEW BEFORE I
WOULD ONLY EAT A LITTLE BIT. BUT MENTALLY IT WAS HARD TO OVER COME.
EVERY WEEK GOT A LITTLE BIT BETTER. YOU NEED TO DRINK ALOT. I GOT
AN INFECTION BECAUSE I DID NOT DRINK ENOUGH. I THOUGHT I WOULD
NEVER FEEL WELL AND STRONG AGAIN. I TOOK OFF SIX WEEKS OF WORK.
WENT BACK PART TIME IN THE BEGEINING BUT NOW I FEEL REALLY REALLY
WELL. GOT INTO A SCHEDULE OF EATING AND DRINKING. NOW I CAN EAT
ABOUT 1/3 OF A CUP OF FOOD AT A TIME NOW. SOMETIMES MORE. I FEEL SO
MUCH BETTER. I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER FEEL GOOD AGAIN. LIKE MY SELF,
BUT NOW I AM OK. ANYONE WHO JUST HAD THE SURGERY HANG IN THERE. IT
WILL GET BETTER. YOU WILL HAVE GOOD AND BAD DAYS. BUT YOU WILL PULL
THOUGH IT. I LIVED THROUGH IT. I GOT THROUGH IT. I HAVE LOST 82
POUNDS. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA MOE
Hi everyone, I have a question. I had surgery 10/21/02 and have lost 50lbs. When I had surgery my Dr. took me off metformin, for my PCOS, told me to check my levels at about 3 months. Well I think my cycles are comming back, but I have tons of hair growth, and I'm also wondering if getting back on the meds would help my weight loss. What do you all think, is there any PCOSers still on their meds? Any advise would be great
Thanks

Hi my name is JoAnn and I had WLS in Wentzville, MO on Halloween of
2000. This surgery has been a true blessing for me and my family. I
am able to do all the things I dreamed about presurgery! I want to
encourage all of you to keep on making your dreams happen.
I was a very lucky person, my insurance paid for my surgery.
However, there are many people out there who are not as fortunate as
I. It infuriates me when an insurance tells a patient No. I do not
believe they should have that kind of power. As you all know, many
times this surgery is the difference between life and death.
I currently work with people to help them elmiminate their personal
debt (credit cards, business and personal unsecured notes, etc). I
do not help people consolidate and I do not help them to declare
bankrupcy - I help them learn how to legally ELIMINATE their debt in
a few months- no matter how high it is. Once they are debt free -
then having the money to pay for this surgery is easy. I feel this
is the way we can take the power away from insurance providers and
back into our own hands.
If anyone here is interested or knows someone this service could
help, please email me and I will be happy to give them more
details.
Keep on believing and working to achieve your dreams!
~Gentle Hugs~

Hi folks -
I attended the local bariatric support group last night and our
speaker was a great guy named Mitch. Mitch and a partner wrote a
cook book for folks who have had bariatric surgery. Included are some
ways to vary your protein drinks, making them more palatable.
He has a website (www.eatinghealthyforlife.com) where he sells the
cookbook and he is currently working on a second. We got to take a
peek at it and there are tons of recipes. The book goes through all
stages out: Week 1, week 2 and so on...
He has taken each recipe and also broke it down by calories, protein,
fats, carbs, etc.
Here's a couple of drink variations he gave as samples:
Hazelnut Mocha Cappuccino Shake
1 scoop of Pro Complex - Chocolate
1 scoop of Pro Complex - Vanilla
8 ounces of cold water
2 ounces of Torani or Divinci Sugar Free Syrup - Hazelnut
6 ounces of skim milk
1 teaspoon decaffeinated instant coffee
Place Pro Complex in a shaker or blender, add water. Shake or blend.
Add remaining ingredients. Process or shake until well blended.
Refridgerate until ready to use. Shake again just before drinking.
Serving: 1
Per serving: 310 Cal; 2g total fat; (5% cal. from fat); 59g Protein;
12g carbohydrate; 28mg cholesterol; 353 sodium.
Dreamsicle Pro Complex Drink
1 1/2 cups of Crystal Light - orange-pineapple
1/2 cup nonfat milk
2 scoops of Pro Complex - vanilla
Place all ingredients in a shaker and shake well until blended.
Refridgerate overnight for best results, shaking again before
drinking.
Serving: 1
Per serving: 301 cal; 2g total fat; (6% cal from fat); 57g protein;
10g carb; 27mg cholesterol; 283mg sodium.
(He recommended refridgerating overnight - like making before you go
to bed. But he prefers them nice and cold. They don't recommend that
you let it sit in the fridge for more than overnight though. Another
words, don't mix anything for more than one day in advance.)
Also included are recipes for chicken, fish, chocolate mousse, etc.

I had Roux n Y on June 20, 2002. I'm almost 7 months post-op. I
have lost 95 pounds. My starting weight was 303. Yesterday I bought
a LARGE sweater at Eddie Baur....WOW!
Last week my husband and I went on vacation, skiing, in British
Columbia. Whistler-Blackcomb, tough place,,,,,I actually enjoyed
it! For the last 3 years I've been learning to ski, it was sooo
hard, I was always out of breath, everything hurt, I hated it. Last
week I actually had fun, until I was stuck on a Black Diamond run, of
course he said it was an accident(yeah). I was never out of breath, I
walk fast now. I can stay awake after 4 hours of skiing and enjoy
some apres fun. I can freakin' ski for 4 hours!
I was on the plane for hours..could actually cross my legs and had
EXTRA seat belt!
Yup, blowin' my own horn here, but I've waited 20 years for this. I
love my life now. I would do it all again in a millisecond!
Sometimes it's tough, dumping and throwing up are not fun. But worth
it?? You'd better believe it!!!!!!!!!!
Cheryl :)
Hello, I'm new to the group. I had the open procedure about nine
months ago. I've lost 102 pounds and I feel so much better, but I've
noticed that since the Holidays I learned I am not one of those
people who dump on sugar or fat. I can eat anything I want to and it
doesn't effect me at all.
I'm wondering for those of you who are post op, how do you deal with
the head hunger? I notice myself eating when I'm not hungry or
eating more than I should. I do not want to be a failure after all I
went through to get here. I need some help or suggestions on how to
get back on track. I would appreciate any suggestions you have.
Hi everone,
This is going to be my first post even though I have enjoyed reading
past posting for about two weeks. I live in N. California and have
Kaiser. In late December I was approved for WLS. It seems I will have
orientation sometime in late March or late May. I am trying to get a
cancellation but that seems impossible. I am positive through all
this because I figure the WLS will happen.
~~Good luck to everyone out there.
Hello to all,
I am new here, and just beginning my journey on how to have this surgery. The more I search for information, the more I realize this might just be the opportunity I have been hoping to find. IT also scares me to death. It will be a real fight with my insurance also.
I hope to find lots of other wonderful people to chat with about their journey in to the WLS world.
A few stats about me.
I'm 40, married to a wonderful man of 22 years, Our daughter is grown and now has two sweet babies... We live on my family farm, here in Tennessee. I have lived in Tn. all my life. I love animals of all kinds, water gardening and flowers are one of my most favorite hobbies. My next favorite hobby is my horses. Due to my weight I had to give up riding a couple of years ago. my body just cannot handle it anymore.
I have always had a weight problem. Nothing ever seems to work for more than a couple of months. I hope I can find a way for WLS to work for me.
Have a good day everyone,
Suna

I am pre-op gastric bypass surgery scheduled for 2/12/03 and looking
for advice/suggestions for palatable protein shakes. Any feedback
you can offer would be helpful, including those shakes that would
not be recommended. Thanks.
Hello! My name is Jennifer and I am strongly considering gastric bypass
surgery.
I live in Colorado and am a single 33 year old computer programmer. I have
been over weight for 9 years. As I'm sure everyone has, I have tried
everything in the book to try to loose weight. My father and my sister
brought the idea of gastric bypass surgery to me. I went to my appointment
with the surgeon last week and I am a good candidate for the surgery.
I guess the only thing that fears me is the possibility of my being able to
screw it up. My sister referred me to a friend of hers who had the surgery
a year and a half ago. She eased my mind some by sharing her experience
with me. Basically, she told me that you don't have to be perfect. If
don't have the perfect diet, you are not going to gain the weight back.
Just pay attention to what you are eating and try to exercise.
I would appreciate any advice you all have.

Prepare to Soar!
They are wheeling me into surgery tomorrow and I couldn't be more
excited. This E-Group has made a big difference in my attitude to
this whole experience. Thank you all.
I am ready for the pain, discomfort and challenges ahead... but most
importantly I am so ready to play soccer and paintball with my son,
take scuba lesson, ride my bike from the top of Vail Mountain and
just be active again. THE SUPER OBESE ME IS GOING TO BE A THING OF
THE PAST.
BTW... this weekend was suppose to be the last binge of my life, I
just couldn't do it. This my friends will be my only failure in the
whole process. I found out that no food is worth remembering.
See you in 5 to 6 days.
Shrinking Brian
Barb,
I'm afraid of the surgery too but you put it all in perspective for
me! Thanks, it makes sense and your message is my motivational tool!

BY THE WAY I FOUND CASHEWS. THEY CHEW UP REALLY WELL. GOOD FOR
PROTEIN. A LITTLE BIT HIGH IN FAT. MOE
83 POUNDS FEELING REALLY GOOD. I MADE IT.. MOE
Barbara - I absolutely love your posts. You have a great sense of
humor (and quite a talent for writing, I should say). You should
seriously consider a memoir!
I too have had those torrid affairs with fast food. However, being
materialistic when it came to filling my belly it wasn't long before
I broke up with ol' Micky D and sought solice and comfort with Carl's
Super Star (with cheese of course). Bigger, badder. Double the patty,
double the love. And it was charbroiled so it had to be better,
right? Sure.
Well, those days are over. Though I'm still in the pre-stages of the
surgery approval process, I have not been through a drive-thru in
over 4 weeks. (Nor have I stepped foot into such an establishment,
using the excuse that getting out of the car and walking in was good
excercise and would burn those calories)
But I will not lie to myself or others - I did go through a drive-
thru yesterday. Yes, it was a hard break-up. But I had to do what I
had to do. No more Iced Caramel Macchiatos or Mocha Frappachinos for
this chick. My celibacy from Starbuck's began officially at 14:30 on
1/11/03. <sigh
laden, caffeine beverage, for krissakes! I know I can do so much
better than this and I'm actually one of the few that enjoy guzzing
water throughout the day and evening. So, there you have it!
Now - on to serious business and a better, healthier, longer life.
Has anyone ever posted a "Question of the Day"?
Just curious. I would be willing to post it if folks will answer them.
G'day all.

Hi,
My name is Kim and I have just started seriously looking into having
gastric bypass surgery. I live in NorthTexas (about 45 miles northeast
of Dallas), am married to Glenn (for almost 11 years) and we have a 7
year old daughter, Katelyn. I presently weigh in at 400 pounds, I only
know this because I had a sinus infection about an month ago which sent
me to the DR. The traditional DR scales only go up to 350 (as most of
us know), but they have devised a system where you put your left foot on
once scale, and your right foot on another, look straight
ahead.........move the weights where they are supposed to be, then add
the two together. The sum was a whoppin' 399.
I was doing weight watchers last year, and they have the digital scales,
I started at 399, lost about 40 pounds, then put it back on again. So
I'm pretty sure the 399 reading is correct.
I've only just now put in an e-mail to my insurance company,
BlueCross/BlueShield of Texas to inquire if they even pay for this
surgery. I don't know the first thing about finding a DR to do this for
me..........it's a very daunting task.
My husband is reluctant about the surgery, although he is reading
everything that I ask him to. There is so much out there on the
internet.........my brain is in overdrive. My parents are ecstatic that
I'm looking into this.....they are totally gung-ho.
Just wanted to introduce myself to y'all. I'm really looking forward to
learning so much from y'all.
