I've created a survey on pre and post op support. If you are
interested in taking part in it, please click on this link:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=16062160875 and answer the 10
questions. It's pretty quick.
The information you give is **completely private** and I will not use
your email information to send solicitations or ANYthing like that.
It's basically an informal survey on support methods.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Coahing for gastric bypass patients
Hi Monica, My name is Kami, and I live in Utah as well! What surgeon are you going with? I live in West Valley, where do you live? I'm 25 years old, and I have a wonderful supportive hubby as well, and I have one little boy. I would love to hear from you,
Kami

Hello! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Monica. I'm 26 and live in
Utah with my ever supportive husband (who I think is already a member here)
and 2 kids. I'm looking into having the gastric bypass surgery. I'm in the
process of gathering all the paperwork to submit to my insurance for
coverage approval. I'm really looking forward to "meeting" all of you! I
can't wait to hear everyone's experiences!

Hi all,
I am new here. I have seen the surgeon and am waiting on insurance
approval. I have all kinds of reasons to have this surgery
(diabetes, high blood pressure, constant upper respiratory
infections, pain in joints..... I could go on and on).
I am 5'10, 325 lbs. I live each and every day ashamed of myself and
wondering if God will let me live through this.
Here is the issue (one of many).... I am afraid of the pain after
the surgery. I am having the open procedure (not laporoscopy) I read
in someon's journal that her doctor would not control her pain and I
am scared to death.
How bad is the pain? How long does it last? Do you suffer for a long
time? Can you really go back to work pretty quickly or will I be
suffering daily at home for 6 - 8 weeks?
If I do not have this surgery I am probably going to die at a young
age... I am 40.
I am just filled with anxiety and cry daily.
Anyone have any advice?
Thanks!
Julie
Hi to you all.
This is not diet related, but being a part of the group, I wanted to ask a favor of you all. As you all know, I had my surgery 12/19 and came home from the hospital on 12/23, as my youngest son, Cody, who is 17, flew home that evening to tell me he was being deployed to Kawait. We had a great visit, in spite of my recovering from the gastric bypass. Cody has been one of my biggest supporters and encouragers to lose the weight, not because he is embarrassed of his mom, but because he wants to see me live a long healthy life, (so I can babysit for my grandchildren he will give me someday).
Anyway, Cody will be turning 18 next month, while he is in Kawait, "fighting the war on terrorism". All of his life, I have looked forward to celebrating his 18^th birthday with him, and now we will have to put off the celebration for six months when he returns. I am asking anyone and everyone I know, if they would mind dropping Cody a birthday card in the mail, to let him know that he is thought of. I hope that it is not too much to ask, but I would appreciate it so much. Cody's address is:
PVT Cody D. Force
A/1-30^th IN BN (M)
Operation Enduring Freedom
APO, AE 09303
It just takes a normal stamp, and if you can't afford a card, just a quick note would be perfect.
Thanks so much.
Cody's Mom.....

Hello Guys,
It's been 26 days since my operation.
I have had what they call a Cappela operation without the silicon
ring - done by video .
Everything was fine except one thing, my doctor before the surgey
told me I was going to be able to eat ANYTHING AFTER SURGERY!!!THERE
WAS NOT GOING TO BE ANY DIET AT ALL, AND THAT WHAT COULD HAPPEN WAS
THAT SUGAR COLUD CAUSE ME DUMPING, BUT OK, I'M NOT INTO SUGAR
ANYWAYS...
But now, after almosst a month drinking juice and having soup, when I
was ready to eaty regular food, tiny bits and small portions- of
course - HE TELLS ME THAT A HAVE TO EAT HALF A CRACKER A DAY WITH ONE
TEA SPOON OF CREAM-CHEESE, A SMALL FRUIT TWICE A DAY, TWO SPOONS OF
CHICKEN AND THAT IS IT?!?!?!?
AND THAT I WILL HAVE TO KEEP THIS DIET FOR THE REST OF MY
LIFE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Do your doctors tell you this too????
Please advise me here in Brasil!!!
Best regards and thanks to all of you!
Golda.
Hi everybody!
Well, I attended the Pacific Bariatric seminar last night in
Riverside (SoCal). It was VERY informative and the doctor that did
the lecture was Dr. Rumsey.
When you go in they weigh you and take your height measurement and
hand you a folder/packet of info. I've lost 4 pounds since I last
weighed in! But I'm an inch shorter than what is on my driver's
license and I was even wearing my "tall tennies". LOL
They also had one of their patients who was 18 mos post-op and she
looked GREAT! She had also had surgery for excess skin removed about
2 weeks ago. She was adorable and a little on the shy side and
everyone had lots of questions for her. They finally had to stop so
we could go on with the rest of the seminar.
Dr. Rumsey ran us through the whole thing from start to finish and
what to expect. The packet they handed out consisted of the
following: Do's and Don'ts and what to avoid the first year; A page
asking if you really want this surgery and be sure to fill all of the
paperwork completely that is included in the packet; an application
with your insurance info (which you turn in afterwards); a 54
question written exam that you submit with all your paperwork; list
of all required lab tests; x-ray request for the gall bladder ultra-
sound; 9 pages questionaire with personal and family medical history
that MUST be completed in as much detail possible; info about the
protocol at PB including the history of both Open and LAP; Pre-Op
prep program of a high protein, low fat diet including protein
supplement, excercise and vitamins (this helps you to get
into "shape" - not a diet per se but they have found this actually
helps folks heal faster); and insurance info, support group info,
local accomodations for post-op/discharge.
The cool thing is that even if you're still in the pre-mode with
everything (like me), you fill out all the info in the packet and
send it to PB. They will actually contact Kaiser and your PCP to
work with them on getting your requirements out of the way.
I've also seen lots of posts in various groups regarding the B-12
(pre/post-op). Dr. Rumsey said it is not necessary to get the shots
(some folks asked about this). They recommend Trader Joe's B-12; they
come in a small tablet that you put under your tongue and it
dissolves in about 5 seconds.
I hope this info helped some folks!
Angie
Ok, I've got some some questions that maybe someone here can answer. The first is just something I was curious about - can you be a vegetarian after having gastric bypass surgery? Seems like you'd have to eat too much bulk to get enough protein. (Like I said - I was just curious - I'm not vegetarian nor do I plan on it, but my sister is so I always wonder about that aspect)
Now for something that's been haunting me..... Just *how* much can this surgery work? I mean, I understand that it will make my stomach a teeny-tiny portion of what it currently is - and so physically the food intake is greatly decreased. But what about psychologically? I mean, I don't always eat because I'm hungry. So what's going to stop me from "grazing" or tricking out my new stomach? I am SOOOO looking forward to this as a tool that can work for me the rest of my life - but I'm also scared of myself. Obviously I don't want to go that route, and I plan to make this step one that will change my life forever and give me the chance to make all those life-changing behaviors. But what is the worst-case scenario? I'm 5' 2" and 245 lbs. What if I lose the weight and then in 10-15 years I gain it back? At that point, what are my options? I'd already have a smaller stomach, so how does an overweight post-RNY person lose weight?
Also, what is a day in a typical 70 year old post-RNY patient like? I mean, I learned about how careful you need to be with the smaller stomach - including any prescriptions. Does this just mean the pain medications or what about Prozac, Tagamet, Allegra, etc? Don't seniors typically eat less anyway? Does the absorption issue ever cause a threat?
Again, please don't get me wrong! I am so excited that a friend clued me into this even being an option for me and I am anxiously awaiting everything I need to get insurance approval (in fact I had a weird dream about that last night ... anyway .... ) But I am worried that maybe my problem isn't "physical" enough and that it would all be in vain. Help!
=) Monica
Hi. I am also around 230 at 5'7. I am probably at 236 now. Just to
let you know, you have to be at least 240 to be considered 100 lbs.
overweight for this surgery (your doc at consultation will tell you
the same), but there are ways around it. I got approved two weeks
ago and am scheduled for my surgery on February 16. I can't wait. I
understand this is a major decision, but I prefer the surgery to
living the rest of my life unhappy with myself. Good luck to you!
I am having my surgery on Tuesday the 14th. I would like to meet and
chat with any other Colorado or Denver area RNY patients.
i am still deciding if i even want to start this process to have the
surgery, you all sound like its more of a hassle than dieting, and
you have about the same outcome, some are successful some aren't!
some one asked about having this after c-section, well august of '01
I had a c-section for my twins (i Was huge to begin with and after
that i am massive) but after they took the staples out of my incision
it popped open in the doc office and about a quart of broken down
blood and water poured out of it, then they wouldn't restaple it and
it had to heal on its own. they told me it was because of my weight
that the skin couldn't heal right. ok now that i have all the gory
details out of the way has anyone had any problems like this with
their insicions from the surgery because lord knows i DO NOT want to
go thru that again! (i could actually look down my stomach and see my
layer of fat). And is anyone from MOntana, i am over on the eastern
side and was wondering if anyone knew who i could contact about even
a consultation.
thank you in advance for your answers

Whether you are pre or post op. I have found a book that is a must
read for changing you old habits. It is called "Self-Talk for Weight

less than $10.00 used.

Hi everyone. I am Heidi. I am planning on getting LaparoscopicGB done
sometime this spring at Alverado in San Diego. Luckily this is my
hometown. As time passes and I get closer and closer I find myself
very nervous for my future health. I am only 21 years old. I have
spent my whole life very large and in charge. I hit my max when I
stepped on the scale a few months ago and it went just over the 300
lb. marker... I flipped out. I am only 5'6 and no matter how big
boned I am, that is so very unhealthy. I also have smoke cigarettes
for 8 years now but just quit as my new years resolution. I am doing
very well so far. I know cigs can have a huge impact on post-op with
complications, ulcers and what not. So, I had to quit them, they are
nasty anyways... Okay I blabbing.. this is my first time posting
here. I just joined. Does Anyone have any comments... words of
wisdom... advise... horror stories... please dish me all and any
information you have time for that could benefit me. I need it.
Thank you all and I look forward to getting to know you.
Heidi
John: I, too, probably like many of us, am a "stress" eater. I eat
when I'm bored, lonely, upset or sad. I also eat just because it's
the weekend, when I'm happy, or to celebrate. So, I know exactly
what you're talking about. I had my bypass this past November 5,
and I've lost 45 pounds to date. I'm thrilled about that, but, in
all honesty, I must say that some days are a struggle. As my
daughter said, "Mom, the surgery did nothing to change you mentally
or emotionally, just physically." So, all the issues that make me
an overeater in the first place are still there. What I've learned
is to keep busy. I've already crocheted two afghans and I'm now
working on cross stitching a couple of pillow cases. I take long,
hot bubble baths, and I read. But, I'll tell you: there are still
plenty of times that I'd like to hit the kitchen, if you know what I
mean. Yes, physically you get fuller much faster. But, if you have
the time and patience, you can spread a meal over an hour and really
put some food away, I have found. I have concerns, also, about the
long term (10 years or more) effects of this surgery. I also know
that it's not any kind of magic bullet, and that we still must
exercise, watch food portions, and keep the fat and calories down
related to our food choices. The surgery is a major medical
procedure and alters your body forever, and it's certainly nothing
to enter into lightly. Good luck to you. Laci
Hi my name is Mary. I had RNY in dec of 1999 and lost 265 pounds I
have now regained about 60 has anyone had to have a revision. I see
the doctor on jan 20 bto check my staple line and all of that.
My surgery date has been scheduled to February 16. I was so scared
at first and paranoid and changed my mind every five minutes about
this surgery. But now, I am okay with everything. I can't wait. I
can think of nothing but this surgery. I am 236 pounds at 5'7.
Right about now, my self-esteem is so low, that I don't even wear
make-up anymore. I want to look and feel good again. I have decided
to tell everyone that I'm going for a gallbladder removal because
everyone has all sorts of negative feedback when I tell them that I'm
thinking about the surgery. I guarantee these are going to be the
same people 6 months from now ringing my telephone off the hook to
get information for themselves :) Thank you all for your support and
continuing supporting words. I know of seven women personally who
have had this surgery and every one of them says that they would do
it again.
Went for my PATs today. Tuesday is my big day, I can't wait. I am
alittle nervous, but more excited. I have a really good mental
outlook on the whole thing. I know i will be in pain, but i know a
few weeks of pain will not measure up to a life time of happiness.
i wanted to know if someone knows of any websites, books etc to help
with meal plans, meal suggestions, and so on..
thanks christine
p.s. any central or northern jersey people who are looking for a

Greetings All!
I just joined the group. I have made the decision to have Gastric
Bypass surgery. I am pleased that my Primary Doctor is 100% behind
me, and now I head into the process of getting approved.
I have a great deal of concern, since I just had to switch over to
an HMO (Aetna/USHealthcare). Does anyone have an experience with an
HMO? I called them this afternoon to let them know I had decided on
the surgery and wanted to know if they would be able to guide me
through the process of getting approved. They literally said, "Why
are you calling us? Have your doctor put through the request".
Does anyone have any ideas on how to ease the process?
Sheila
United Health Care as well. My primary Dr. set me up with my
surgeon, my surgeon approved me having the surgery - my surgeon
contacted my HMO - my HMO contacted me 3 weeks later with full
approval.
The whole thing cost me out of pocket $30.00. $10.00 for my first co-
pay visit with the Surgeon, and another co-pay $20.00 for subsequent
tests with two other doctors before surgery.
It was remarkably simple and painless. I've been feeling almost
guilty reading on these boards the problems that people are having.
GOOD LUCK!!
They have actually overturned my denial for the consultation!!! They
approved it! I don't know what to do with myself!
The girls I work with seem to think that if they approved the
consultation, and the surgeon feels this is medically necessary, that
the actual surgery will be approved. Does anyone have any thoughts
on this?
I want to thank everyone who sent me your words of encouragement! I
have them all saved!
Stacy
I am a married guy (for 10 years...yipee) with 4 children and I am
what my doctor calls Morbidly Obese. I am 6-1 and weigh around 380 (I
havent weighed since before Christmas). I have tried diet after diet,
pills from phen-fen to anphetamines. My last (successfull) weightloss
attempt was in 2001 when my doctor told me to consider gastic bypass.
I was at my maximum of 410 in 2000 when he told me this, by August
2001 I weighed 336, but alas... as much as I was excited about the
loss, it just stopped leaving and started coming back.
With the piece about Al Roker on Dateline, Ive begun thinking about
it alot. I had done some research in 2000 and all I found was all the
scary stories. I am hoping to hear some success stories here... how
does it go when youre not a multi-million dollar earning weatherguy.
And what is the REAL long term effects? What happens with the monster
cravings when your stressed? I look forward to talking with all of
you Ive really appreciated what Ive read so far.
God Bless.... John in Oregon

Hi everyone out there, my name is Gaynor, I live in Adelaide, South Australia and have been researching this procedure for about 6 months.
It is interesting to hear all of your comments, including approvals. Over here if you have private health insurance, this type of surgery is covered. I did not have to ask anyone for approval. I feel sad for those of you who have not been able to or are waiting for approval.
Anyway, I have seen the surgeon, had all of my pre-op tests and am due to see the dietician on Thursday.
I am at the stage where I am ready to "chicken out". It has been really hard to find other people in Australia that have had this done and even harder to find "long term" patients.
Does anyone know of anybody out there that has had this done for a while eg. 20 years or more???? I would really love to hear from them and how they are feeling now.
I am 40, have a great partner of 20 years and two wonderful children 10 and 8. I weigh 124kgs (woops I mean 272 pounds) the heaviest I have every been. Up until 10 years ago I was always around 75kgs (woops again 165 pounds). I have no other health problems at this stage but I know I have to do something.
Katie, I wish you all the best for tomorrow as it is alreayd the 7th here. Can't wait to hear how it all went.
Thanks for all of the support everyone gives to each other, I didn;t know you were all out there.
Gaynor
I will be 60 this week. I am scheduled to speak with the Gastric
Bypass doctor Jan 23. I am 5'10" FAT male. I have been this way off
and on all my life. I pray that I am accepted. I just found out that
55 is usually the cut off age. I was also told that some are even
performed on 60 year olds under special situations. I have breathing
problems and I have had three back surgerys and a spinal fusion on 4
vertabre. I also have had a heart attack. I have sleep abnea and
snore like a hog. I have had a throat operation to help my snoring
and it did not help.
I really want and need this operation. The only thing that bothers me
is I have anxity attacks sometimes. I know this operation would
really be stressful. I hope I can handle it. I had planned to move to
the beach and fish with my son who lives there after retirement. Five
years ago I had to take a early retirement because of my health. I
now live at the beach but can not go fishing. I have no fun except in
my woodworking shop. I would love to spend more time with my family
but I know they are ashame to be seen with me because of my weight. I
am ashame to meet their friends. I'm sure a lot of you can associate.
Please pray that they will accept me for the operation!
Thanks
1st of all Praise GOD !!!! and thankyou all who replied
with their help i called my surgeon's office about the
insurance reply of no action about the duodenal
switch surgery i and my fellow comrade thought it was
a flat denial come to find out it meant that the part of
service my Dr. asked authorization for did not require
authorization and that means i am able to get the
duodenal switch i applied for my DR. asked for
approval for long limb RNY cpt code 43847 and
duodenal switch related cpt 43633 the fist code was
approved on one paper and the cpt code read no
action but it said service may be provided without
authorization so by doing this medicaid approved me
in a round about way . They gave me my surgery date
IN JULY!!! i cant wait then again im in no rush to go
under the knife my case may not be the norm
because i have a bmi of 80.5 but then again i asked
the nurse are many approved with medicaid she said
yes as long as your MA is straight MA without a
10,000 dollar cap.

Well, I had my pre-op stuff this morning - all kinds of tests, instructions
on the spirometer, blood work, etc. I got my instructions which do not
include a big clean-out - yippie.
I'm all set for tomorrow morning at 6:45am. Nervous isn't the word for what
I'm feeling.

Hello All....
I am a 34 year old mother of 2 wonderful children. I am
approximately 5'7" tall and @230 lbs. (haven't been on the scale
lately). I have been on all kinds of diets and have successfully
lost weight on some (in my earlier years) but have always gained back
the weight. I am almost at the point with my weight when I was 9
months pregnant with my 2nd child...and I am not pregnant.
I have been looking into this surgery. I hope to get some feedback
and learn more through this group. I don't even know if it is right
for me yet...I just know I have to do something and soon!
Take Care,
Kim

Hi,
I'm having open surgery day after tomorrow (the 7th). Doc says I have to be
on a liquid diet for 3 weeks and then "blended" foods. Anyone have
recommendations or ideas for some good liquids - things that I should drink,
things that might be at least tasty, things that I can tolerate?
Thanks for the help.

Hello, I am from Fort Smith, Arkansas. I have decided to have the surgery done but I want it done laparoscopically. My primary care physician wasn't aware that it was being done like that so... she will be no help to me at all. I found a website and some names but I would like to talk to some one that has used them. I also have insurance coverage through Blue cross Blue sheild of Michigan.. They didn't pay for my consult with my primary doc to talk to her about the surgery...any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.
Who woulda thunk it? So now I have to go back to the sleep lab and let them calibrate the d*** CPAP machine. The tech said my oxygen saturation got down to 71% in my times of not breathing. Is that real bad? I have to say, while I complained about my surgeon requiring alllll these preop tests, I cannot understand someone not wanting to have them done. Just imagine if I went to the surgeon I originally had an appointment with. He requires only a pyschiatric test. I also had my EGD done on Thursday and no ulcer, cancer, or tears. So that's good. Oh well, at least I'm getting closer to a date.
Michelle
Greetings all, I am a 32 y/o female, and I am getting prepared to have
Gastric Bypass Surgery. I am 5'6 and approx 330 lbs. Has anyone out
there ever had the Laporoscopic type of bypass surgery? That is what
I am having done. Also, does anyone out there have Blue Cross/Shield
Insurance they are saying that this is "elective surgery " for me.
Just curious if they (BC & BS) have approved it for any other members?
I am not really concerned, as my parents can fortunately afford to pay
cash for the surgery (which come to find out is about $8,000.00
cheaper if you are not involved with the Insurance Companies. Dr.
Douglas Olsen in Nashville, TN @ Centennial Medical Center is going to
be doing the procedure on me. I have a friend that had the same
surgery done on July 14th and The day she went in for surgery she wore
a size 3x/4x or 26/28 (284lbs)...and this past Wed. She bought a size
14 and weigs in at 174! And she looks FANTASTIC! ARGH! I can not
wait to be skinny! Can anyone tell me expierences with this type of
procedure, pain, discomforts, etc. Input from ANYONE would be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks!!!
Alison :)
Hello all,
Well, I have the same problem as alot of folks here. I have Ohio
health and they will not budge on my surgey. My husband is in the
process of either going with another insurance at a super high price
or changing jobs.
I want to know what we can do to change the laws so that insurance
companines can not deny?
Any links?
Any addresses?
Any thoughts?
Thank you

Well, here I am wandering aimlessly in appeal land. The girl
handling my appeal is very sweet, but doesn't think that I have a
chance in getting this approved. I am 5'8" and approximately 350
lbs. What is so hard to understand about this? The appeal girl
tells me that if if was based on weight alone it would be no problem,
but unfortunately they are looking for some sort of comorbidities
before they will approve. It is like they are waiting for me to have
a heart attack or develop diabetes.
I am a 32 year old single mother of a beautiful boy and I can not
die. I am all he has.
I am getting so depressed over this and am finding it hard to crawl
my butt out of bed and function every day.
Please, if there are any words of wisdom that any of you can give me
to help me along in this process, I would be eternally gratefull!
Stacy
He did my surgery - their clinic is WONDERFUL and he is a GREAT Dr.
I live in West Hollywood and I waited an extra two months for my
surgery, as opposed to going to UCLA, because there was no other
hospital or Dr. I would have to the procedure.
The best of luck to you - you are in good hands.
Cindy
Hi I guess I should tell you more about myself. I had my first consult on July 1, 2002 then switched jobs and had to change ins so moved my consult to August 1.2002 this is after waiting almost 7 months for my first apt. I was apv for surgery with Dr. V about 4 weeks latter for Dec 9th on nov 5 I gat a call from Dr. V's office saying that the ins Co retracted THE APV and are denying coverage because of group exclusion.
I began writing letters to ins and ins commissioner talked with the head of HR. As I was waiting for responses at work I was pulled into my employers HR office with my Director and was told on Nov 7th that they don't' feel I was trustworthy and will have to let me go, I failed to let anyone know how backed up my work was (such BS I told everyone they knew it) I was escorted out of the building with my stuff. I called Unemployment that day. I was finally apv my company did not want to give it to me because they say I caused finacial stress after I talked to the Unemployment lady she told me that she was going to apv my unemployment. (just more prooff that my company was in the wrong)
My phone got cut off and I stayed at my moms f axing information everywhere 13 news, Lawyer,Head of Hr etc......I got no where my mom and I begged and pleaded with B/C they said employer can waive it But the employer said no because it was for self esteem blah blah blah.
So I went into a deep depression. Now what was I to do. Luckily I read something about an open enrollment period for individual coverage that would cover surgery. I filled out the paper work and was denied coverage because of my weight and height ratio. I then found out I filled out the wrong paper work for the open enrollment this product did not ask medical questions. Well I was apv for the insurance coverage. It started jan 1, 2003 In the mean time I made another apt with Dr. V to get another letter sent to the new ins. My apt is Jan 15. My policy does have and exclusion on it. It states:
*medical or surgical treatment for obesity, unless otherwise specified in the covered services
*Medical or Surgical treatment or regimen for reducing or controlling weight, unless otherwise specified in the covered services
I called the ins company and asked what they meant by otherwise specified in the covered services They said if it is med nec it will be covered. I looked under covered services and it does say all med nec procedures will be covered.
So here I am now about to get on another ride. If this does not go through I don't know what to do. I hope that Dr.V can give me the surgery ASAP. I mean some lucky person got my Dec 9th date I can only hope to be so lucky. I already got a letter from my psychiatrist stating it is important for me to have the surgery and I understand it all. It has been a long journey I can't wait to start the next ride on the other side.
I don't know what to do about work I am now collecting unemployment I hope to have the surgery soon so when I am done I can go and get a job. Unfortantly a company I want to work for with a perfect position called me to set up an interview yesterday. I feel that I should hold on and see what dr.v can do for me........................
Any suggestions?
Well that is my story......

Hi,
I am a new member and I have found this site very helpful. Can anyone
tell me about how long the hospital stay is. I am waiting for my
appointment with the Dr. and they tell me it can be up to a 11 month
wait. Is this a long time to wait to meet the Dr.?
Thanks,
Kim
Hi Everyone!
I'm also new to the scene and have joined a couple of the groups. I
enjoy all the postings and have learned a lot from all of you!
I just recently started the ball in motion when I met with my PCP on
12/12. He didn't even bat an eye and said I'd be a great candidate
for WLS. I'm 39/5'4/350/BMI 60.1 (DOH!) I don't have any
comorbidities (that I know of) other than achy arthiritic/grinding
knees. I've already done my bloodwork and the referral has been sent
to the nutritionist. He had me also have a mammogram (something I
hadn't seen anyone else post about having to do) and the results from
that came back normal. I'm thinking I should call back or schedule an
appt with him to ask about the gallbladder ultrasound - as maybe he
doesn't know what all the requirements are? I plan to follow up with
the nutritionist portion next week (after the holidays)to stay on top
of things. I am also putting together my entire yo-yo dieting
history. Other than that, I forgot to ask my PCP if he had any other
patients that he had put through the motions for WLS and the outcome.
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to furnish him with as much
info as possible (providing the url for obesityhelp.com, etc) or if
that would be stepping on toes, per se. From those of you who have
gone through all the hoops, do you have any recommondations or
thoughts of what I should provide my PCP? Any info is greatly
appreciated!
I started out on the www.kponline.org site and it has also been
informative but I've had some questions that no one had answers for.
I'm finding lots of people in the NoCal area but few here in SoCal
(But I know you're out there!). I'm located in the Ontario/Rancho
Cucamonga area and would love to hook up with other folks in the area
for support. The main facility here is Fontana but I don't believe
they do the surgeries there.
I went through the Pacific Bariatric website with a fine tooth comb
and am planning to attend one of their seminars on 1/9 in Riverside.
I also see they have a support group in San Bernardino which I will
also contact.
I have a couple questions for ya:
1)Is there anyone here from the Inland Empire area
(Ontario/Rancho/San Berdo)that has gone pre-op procedures through
Kaiser - South (Fontana or have they been referred to UCLA or PB)?
2)Are there any support groups in the west IE (Ontario/Chino/Rancho
Cucamonga) area? I've been searching but no luck yet. However, I did
read a post on another group regarding going through a private center
to see if they have a local support group and will try that.
I really hope that WHEN (I won't say IF) I get approved I can have
the procedure done at Pacific Bariatric. They sound wonderful.
Nice to meet all of you (albeit cyberly) and thanks for a great group!
Angie
Hi everyone!! I'm Jenn just joined your group. I am 28 and had my open gastric bypass on August 21,2002 just 4 months in I have gone from a size 22 to a 14 from 236 - 176 so far.
I feel great! I also have problems with Eggs it is the only food I have a problem with!! I never get sick but my weight loss is slower than anyone I know of. I have been reading lots of the post on the site and look forward to being here! Thanks Jenn

Go with the RNY. I'm having it done Feb 5. I'm going with a surgeon
who uses an open approach, (so he can see what he's doing). You have
a very high BMI and it would probably be wiser to go with the surgery
which offers the best chance of getting the weight off and keeping it
off.
Tough decision. Good luck.
Frank
Hi all just joined the group
Hello everybody,
I wrote several weeks ago with questions about the surgery. I have another now
that I hope some of you can answer.
After many years of trying to conceive, my husband and I have a beautiful 11
month old boy. He was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, but that is a
whole other story. My question is, can you have a baby after having this
surgery, and if so, what special things do you have to do to have a sucessful
pregnancy? Has anyone here had a baby after the surgery? Please give me any
advice or information you have on this. We aren't sure we want to have more
children, but we want to know if we still have that option if I have the
surgery.
Thank you,
Denika Menis

Hi. I'm a 56 year old male, 375 pounds (BMI 50).
And I'm trying to decide between gastric
bypass surgery and the lap band.
Three out of three surgeons have strongly
recommended the gastric bypass surgery (laparsocopic Roux-en-Y).
All 3 also perform band surgery (Inamed, laparascopic)as well.
They all say that my likely weight loss with the band will
be less than the 150 lbs I need to lose.
Until I met with the third surgeon yesterday, I strongly
preferred the band. However, I think I need more info about
the weight loss and side effect that those who have had
RNY bypasses are experiencing. I would
very much appreciate whatever you can tell me.
I'm fortunate that one of the surgeons is willing to follow my
preference, whatever I decide. (He's not even ruling out the
possibility of taking out an ineffective band in a couple years
and then performing the gastric bypass.
Whatever you can tell me will be much appreciated.
I haven't heard of this but was worried about getting enough protein after
the surgery. Can I find this in a pharmacy? a health food store?
Thanks - Katie
Hello Susan,
I am new ...... but am very inspired w/your posted message.
Congratulatons, on your new outlook on life and on yoru achievements! My surgery is in 5 weeks and I am excited abou it! Keep up the good work!

Hi. My name is Patti and I'm fairly new to this list, just reading the posts while going through the approval process. I just found out that I've been approved and my surgery date is February 3^rd! Naturally, I'm scared, but I'm trying to do as much as I can to `get ready' for the surgery. Any suggestions you might have to prepare for surgery or afterwards are certainly welcomed!
I am in the waiting game also, like several of you. I am probably going to
have a revision to RNY due to strictures of my band. I have gone from 285 to
200 in 2 years and am stuck stuck stuck for I cannot eat correctly without
vomiting. The insurance lady said they'd approve me soon as my psych eval
comes in, have it next week. Can't believe I have to jump thru all these
hoops again. I am curious as to one thing, for a proximal RNY, is there an
"approximate" number of what percent of our calories we absorb? I forgot to
ask the doc.
Thanks !

Hi - I just joined. My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, the 7th. I
am very nervous. I have almost no support from people I know because they
think it's too drastic and risky. Oh well.
Katie
Hello, I am going to have my surgery in 2weeks. I am getting
nervous. I'm sometimes afraid to tell people, what if I'm one of
the one's that it doesn't work for? Anyone have any advise for me?
Thanks
I just found this group and I am finding it very helpful. I have
diabetes and I am insulin dependent. Has anyone had the surgery who
is insulin dependent? How long do you have to stay in the hospital
before discharge? What is the pre and post diets like? I am waiting
for an appointment at the Lahey Clinic in MA. Any information would
be helpful!
Thanks,
Kim
Hey I just joined here and wanted to say hello to all...I am 6 months

read about some of you and your success stories and support.
Hi everbody,
I was approved Dec. 16, 2002 and now I'am playing the waiting game, I belong to Kaiser In N.California and there seems to be a BIG demand for this surgery, so I will have a orientation sometime in April or May..a long wait. I just made the phone call to se if anybody has cancelled and nope everybody wants to keep their dates. Has anybody out there been able to get a orientation date sooner then later.
Hello!
I am scheduled to for my bypass Wednesday - 2/5/2003, I am very excited.. Any words of advice for me?
I have been overweight since 5 th grade, and am entering into my 40's, to be smaller would be something totally new to me!!

Hi all:
I found this wonderful group about a week ago. The information and
support that is found here is so wonderful, I want to thank you all.
I have posted a few messages under the name of DenverBri69 but I have
decided that I would create a new moniker for my soon to be new life.
So here I am as ShrikingBrian2003. My surgery is scheduled for
January 13th. It will be open and not laprascopically. I am
anticipating all sorts of pain and discomfort, but I have a high
tolerance for such things... afterall I was married for 20 years and
have a teenage daughter. Ha! Ha!
I use to be a chef, so if any of you would like some pointers on
adding taste to our limited menu selection, just drop me a line.
Hava a happy and healthy new year.

I keep on trying to post pictures, but i keep on getting a message
the that there is an error with the server. Am I doing something
wrong? Is there something more I should be doing? Can we even post
pictures still?

Hi Everyone !!!! I hope everyone is doing well. I just received a call from my Drs. office and they had a cancellation, so instead of having my surgery on Jan-22, it will be next Wednesday the 8th. Now i am nervous but still excited at the same time!!!! Everyone please keep me in your prayers!!!!!!!
Thanks........Marc
There is a picture(s)of Laura on the main picutes page. Has she
posted any more, that i can't see? She is such a beautiful person,
if she has any up to date I would love to see the progress.

well i called bc/bs they don't have open enrollments..............and they don't call a wright limitation descrimination.............what a bunch of crap..........(sorry)
What a crock...........just got off phone with insurance provider....and i cannot get insured on my own plan .......because i am too fat..........now if i go in under a group...it's ok.............what sense does that make???
Hello. I am new to the group and have been reading previous posts. I
have many questions.
I want to hear the horror stories of what post WLS patients have gone
through and then tell me, would you do it again?
I am not scared of the pain, or the change in lifestyle I will need
to make. My newly diagnosed Diabetes scares me more than anything. I
have a family history of heart problems and the diabetes does not
help. I am only 37 and would like to get the upper hand on any
potential heart problems before I need heart stents or by-pass. So
there are definite reasons to lose weight and get into shape.
I am allergic to soy and know there might be a protien problem post-
op. Any sources of supplemental protien other than soy for those post-
op protien drinks?
I have so many questions, I think they are better answered by
experienced 'professionals' who have had the procedure, not the one's
that make the money from it. I just want to know what to expect. The
little things the Dr. may not mention.
Thanks for any personal experiences you can help me with.

Christmas and hope you will all have a happy new year

i just joined the group because i am considering having this

for doctors to perform this operation....

Those of you that purchased insurance on your own, did you have any
kind of waiting period before asking for the surgery? Were you able
to get it approved right away? If so, can anyone give me some ins
companies that I can call and apply for? We currently have ins
through my husband's employer, but this surgery is an exclusion as
well as any other weight loss stuff. I tried to get them to approve
it twice. I even had letters from my doctor, my sleep doc, and
myself. I proved beyond a doubt that this surgery was medically
necessary, but they still won't approve it. They even admitted it
was medically necessary!! But they still won't approve it. They
would rather pay for everything that is wrong with me, so I'm letting
them. This includes Sleep Apnea (cpap), lower back pain (physical
therapy), heel spurs (cortisone shots and pain pills), depression
(more pills), and I just found out that I'm in the first stages of
degenerative arthritis in both my knees and hands to top everything
off. I feel like I'm falling apart. I'm only 34 years old and I
feel like an old lady. So now I would like to try and purchase my
own insurance. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I'm in
Michigan if that helps. Thanks.

Interesting few days I missed here I see. Of course
info is needed, but Ichibon it sounds like from your
postings that you feel the surgery was a mistake- you
didn't say that, but that came across to me.
Education and support is what this support group is
about- bottom line.
I used a similar group heavily when I started out.
200 pounds later I admit I don't use it that much, but
it's good to read through it all anyway. It's like a
WW meeting that way. We all have had challenging
points in our roads to the surgery but I think we do
not dwell on them which is why we don't see so much
about the negatives. You can go into shock from
having your tonsils out. Sounds like your daughter is
having a VERY atypical recovery- not the norm at all,
so of course there iplethoraing to be a plethera of
info here to help. At this point she is still in
recovery mode from the actual surgery.
At the time I had my surgery there was another
woman there who had the same procedure with the same
Dr as me. I had serious complications because my body
just seized up. I had emergency surgery that night
and was in ICU for 2 days. But as soon as I woke up I
got my ass in gear and did everything I could to get
back on my feet. I did 2x as many lapstationnd the
nurses staion as the Physical Therapist asked me to
and kept it up with the help of my family afterwards.
Even when I didn't feel like it, I did it.
Well, at my one month visit to the surgeon the
other woman was there too. She had a smooth surgery
with no complications but she was still using a
wheelchair since she was so "tired from the surgery."
I had lost 40 pounds and she 24.
If learn anything from these posts it is that we
have all had different experiences with our surgeries
and we all have the opportunity to post them. Lets
just not take out the frustrations we are having with
our own lives (or that of our loved ones) on the very
people we are looking to for support, aye?
Sarah
EGGS KILL ME. I CAN ONLY EAT BOILED EGGS IN TUNA SALAD. THEY MAKE ME
VERY SICK. MOE
I'm 6months post-op and I've lost around 100 lbs. (yeah!) I was wondering
how much more, if I keep on like I am, am I expected to lose? I'd like to
lose around 70 or 75 more pounds. Is that realistic? Can I if I keep up
the dieting (eating the right foods exercise etc...)?
Has anyone else had a problem just adjusting to the way people treat you?
Isn't it amazing the difference? It bothers me at times. People who just
almost didn't know I was there when I was (and I still am) overweight, are
so nice now, or at least acknowledging my presence...lol It's amazing the
adjustments you have to make mentally. Ex: I found myself waiting in line
for the BIG bathroom at Olive Garden and it dawned on me! I didn't have to
wait on it. I could actually use the regular bathroom and I was perfectly
comfortable. My point? The adjustments are physical AND Mental. Good
Luckto all out there.
I'm very glad I chose to do it. It is scary though and a major decision!
Happy Holidays to all of my online family and friends. I truely feel
blessed that weight loss surgery has allowed me to have a healthier
and happier life, and has afforded me the opportunity to meet some
of the most wonderful people. For those of you I had the privlidge
to meet in person or online, I thank you all for touching my life and
hope I was able to provide some help, inspiration or just be there to
listen.
Lets remember those who we lost in their struggle to improve their
health, and pray that their family and friends find peace and
stregnth. Also remember those who will be having surgery in the
coming year and those that are just beginning their journey. One of
the greatest gifts we can give is to offer support and encouragement
to others who are going where we have been. I will continue to
provide online information, advocacy and support via www.wlshelp.com
and will shortly be introducing a new website dedicated to providing
nutrition and fitness information just for post-op patients.
I wish you all Happy Holidays, and a great New Year. In 2003 lets
strive to be better people! better health, wealth, happiness, and
most of all kinder to those we meet.
visit www.WLSHelp.com for information, advocacy, and
support.....Prepare to soar!
Hi,
I am 1 mnth post op as of today. I have been reading the post on the
site a lot. I have had a bad time with my surgery. Let me rephrase
that....my surgery went great, I didn't. I am at the point now were
I cannot seem to keep anything down and the depression seems to be
getting worse. A close friend of mine is going to have the surgery
in March. I have been trying to get her ready for it, she thinks I am
trying to make her change her mind, I am not. I need to have the
surgery and so does she. I was not prepared for the "after" affects
of it though. I wish I would have been more prepared, now I have to
figure this one out. I wish you all a happy Holiday & I hope the new
year brings you something better.
hugs!

I have been trying to search every thing out on the by pass. Will my
time is now. I am 59 years old and march will be 60 and then they
won't do it. So I have started the ball rolling. I do need to know
more about some of the bad things and also How to get all the paper
work done right. I am a diabetic and have lung problems and had open
heart surgery last year which is why I kept putting it off until I
had my heart working better. Is their any one that would like to give
me their stories and information. My Doctor does not recomend Lap for
me as my weight is in my stomach and he said that when he would blow
it up it would put too much presure on my heart and lungs and they
could have a lot of problems on the table. He is reconmending the
regular way. He said they are both done the same way but I will be
cut from the belly up to my incision where they stoped for open
heart. He didn't act like he saw any problems with me getting
approved. I have fought my weight since I was 10 years old and have
went the route to lose weight a lot. I have been through nutra
system, weight watchers, Physician weight lost and low carb etc. I
hope you all can help me. Sandy C

IT IS WHEN SOMEONE CAN'T CONTROL WHAT AND HOW MUCH THEY EAT. THEY
EVEN EAT OTHER THINGS THAN FOOD. LIKE SPONGE, COTTON. HARMFUL
STUFF. MOE
Dear Group,
I just joined the group. I had the surgery June 23rd. I was basically
healthy, except for the weight. I have done really well I think, but I have
stuck to the diet pretty strickly. I have lost around 100 lbs (depending
what scale I step on). I feel so much better! I would still like to lose
70 lbs and hope I will be able to.
I am having one problem that I am a little concerned about. Around 3
months ago I started losing my hair. I've always had very thick hair
(fortunately), but it is still falling out pretty steadily. I read on the
internet and a few books that this is common and that it will grow back.
Yes, I have been to the doctor and they did all the test and nothing else is
wrong. I'm trying to eat as much protien as I can at every meal.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does it eventually grow back?

Hi. I have been researching this surgery since 1994. Saw that lovely
Bariatric Treatment Center commerical on TV and called. I got the
video and was horrified. 1995 someone I knew was thinking about
having it done, all I did was point out all the bad I have heard
etc.. They did their research and told me I should too before I say
one word. I did just that. I am to have surgery in March of 2003.
Some of the risks that made me put this off this long are as
follows...
1 out of 100 people die from this surgery, either during or after
from complications.
Lifetime of taking vitamins.
Pukeing
Dehydration
Vomiting
Bowel Blockage
Ulcers
Hernias
Possible staple leaks
and the list goes on.
One must truely do their research. Not only about the surgery itself,
but about the surgeon as well. check the medical boards for his
status and certifications, check the public records for law suits
pertaining to the surgery (some counties have it all online). Make a
list of questions to ask your surgeon, How many surgeries he's done,
how long he's been doing it, what type of pouch he uses, what diet he
suggests, ask to talk to other patients if possible, join groups
(like this one) talk to others, find chat area's, find support group
meetings in your area.
The diet and vitamin suppliments vary widely by surgeon. I think that
in itself is where a lot of the problem is. I have heard people say
their surgeons said eat baby food, ok to eat pureed food after only
two weeks. I guess it does depend on your pouch size, but one must
truely follow their diet exactly and be certain of what you eat. Make
note of what makes you sick and what doesn't. Listen to your body.
This WLS is a TOOL for us, not a cure.
I will be having my surgery here in Akron, Ohio. It will be the Open
RNY performed by Dr. Mark Jaroch. He uses the Micro Pouch RNY method
and has a very strict regimen he requires. He has a long wait before
the surgery is actually done and a great after care program. He has
grocery store walk thru's to teach his patients what to eat and how,
he holds monthly support group meetings to discuss eating issues.
The surgeon is the most important part of this surgery and your
dedication to let your body heal and listen to what it wants and
needs.
Ok, I'll stop for now. I just had to add my two cents LOL

Hi i am scheduled to have my gastric bypass january 17th, and i am
worried to death about this, its all i think about. am i the only
one who feels(felt) like this prior to surgery? i was fine with it
until my surgeon set my date and i cried all the way home, im
terrified of this. i never imagined the emotional stress that i
would feel with this. is there anything i can do to relieve the
stress? thanks
Hi! wats up? My names Jenn. Im a 22/f/pa. Im lookin into gettin a gastric bypass done. Im still workin on the paperwork. Heres some info on me & my issues with my weight & stuff.
Im 4'11 & weigh over 330 lbs. so i need to loose about 230 accordin to my doctors.
Ive been on fen/phen, redux, other diet meds, boiled diets, atkins diet, chemical diets, fat free diets, 1000 calorie diets, TOPS, etc.
When i was born i weighed 5 lbs, puffed up to 25 lbs when i was 2 weeks old.
I was put on m1st diet before I was a yr old.
Im on synthroid, for hypothyroidism, Ive been on it since i was 1, so ive about had it with this weight, so im gonna give the gastric bypass a try.
They actualy dont know wats wrong with me.
Because i have something unknown like cerebral palsy. but its not a true CP, so i dont even know wat i have to begin with. They did several genetic tests a few yrs back. They took 6 tubes from each of my parents & 12 from me. they lost everything. then when my mom mentioned gettin lawers involved. everything came up negative. But just recently, they tested for Praider Willi syndrom. wich EVERYONE "knew" i had, well, results were negative.
So ya, I need to do something drastic cause ive tried everything else. So im goin ahead with the gastric bypass. My only concerns with that r that I never feel full, no matter how much I eat. Plus Im always thirsty. I drink 2 or 3 gallons of water a day. I dont have diabetes. Ive been tested for it COUNTLESS times sice I was little because of the excessive thirst. Any advice or tips?

TOMATO SOUP... I ATE SOME AND I GOT SICK.. TO MUCH SUGAR??
Lap is $21,300.00; Open is $18,550.00. "Does not include Pre-op. lab
testing, Post-op lab testing, prescriptions, consulting physician as
may be required for individual needs, additioonal surgeries if
needed, including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, etc, additional
fees for services and supplies in connection with complications
and/or cases considered "high-risk"." I copied that from the sheet
my doc gave me. He's Dr. Jefferson Vaughan and he is in Jupiter, Fl.
Minutes north of West Palm Beach. I went to him because my cousin is
a Nurse who works with him in his O.R. and she would not let anyone
else touch me! She says he's the best. I looked him up on
ObesityHelp.com and everyone who has filled out the info for how they
liked him just loved him! as well as the hospital, all rooms are
private. If you go to his web-site (SurgicalWeightControl.com) and e-
mail him he replies HIMSELF. I had a great experience. And this looks
like a great price. His office will e-mail you a video and package.
Good Luck! Shelly (not a paid spokesperson! LOL)
I am new here and am in the process of getting approval (at least
trying to) for this surgery. I don't know which one yet I will be
having, or better yet which one my insurance will approve, but I
figure I will start the process.
The ins company has already denied my request to go talk with a
surgeon, and I am now in the appeal process. I am hoping this will
not take forever. I am not expecting it to happen over night, but I
am hoping it will be less than 6 months. A girl can hope can't she?
Well, I am happy to be here and really enjoy reading all of your

Hey Kat,
This PPO Insurance you have with Blue Cross..... is that through a company that you work for ? I tried switching to Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Louisiana on an individual policy and they have a WEIGHT requirement... go figure,... I have to weigh 197 lbs to qualify. Right now I'm at 220... arrrrgh
I'd have to lose weight just to get the insurance,, then gain back up to 225 to have the surgery.
I'm sad, it's a never ending story......
I'm in Southern California, my insurance is Health Source and it's
an HMO of all things - and my out of pocket expense was $10.00 for my
original consult with the surgeon - and another $10.00 to another Dr.
for pre-op tests. $20.00 total out of my pocket from start to finish.
I only mention this because I'm so surprised at all the trouble I've
been reading about on this board.
I'm so sorry for all who aren't getting satisfaction and having such
extreme frustration. I wish you all the very best of luck in
resolving your situations.
I did not read it personally. I had the company http://www.neweighweb.com contact my insurance to verify my benefits. I'm assuming that because NeWeigh is the company that would put me in contact with the doctors that they knew the right questions to ask the insurance company. Maybe not... but there job is to verify benefits only....

Small world :-)
I too had my surgery at Sedar Siani, with Dr. Khalili. I had the
laprospocic gastric bypass (not the lap-band) and I live in West
Hollywood. I had my surgery on 9/10/02 - and have lost 50 pounds - I
hit a space of two weeks, after only 5 weeks, where I lost nothing -
I was terribly frustrated and dissapointed because I was comparing
myself to others, and kept hearing of people that had lost up to 70
pounds during the same space of time. It's okay though and realize
we are all different and that any weight I lose is magnificent and I
am making great strides. I started at 298 pounds, and I'm 5 feet 8
Inches - 40 years old.
Would love to know more about you, and would love to answer any
questions you might have - we could be a great support to each other.
There will be up and down days, and most likely mood swings after
the 'novelty' wears off.
Take care - and hopefully talk to you soon.
Cindy
I called NuWeigh, http://www.neweighweb.com it's a company that has recently started facilitating in the state of Louisiana for three doctors that will perform the surgery. They told me the cost of the Lapp private pay is $35,000 and the Open would be $35,500. I wanted to know just in case I had to pay for it myself. Is this about the same cost that most of you had to pay. If not, with insurance, what was the out of pocket expense for the surgery. I hope I'm not being too personal but I just want to make sure the cost is in line with other facilities.
Thanks so much...
Sandi

Hi everyone! My name is Jennifer, I am 31, and I just found this
forum today, and thought what would it hurt to come out and chat.
I had my gastric bypass 3 years ago next month, and had great success
with it. Since then, I married, and have popped out two babies in
two years. While this is fabulous, it is also my problem. With my
first baby I gained 23 lbs, with the second (unplanned surprise), I
gained another 24 lbs....that's nearly 50 lbs that I can't seem to
get rid of. This is devastating considering I went to such lengths
to loose the weight, and now I still can't eat much, and I can't
loose the weight either.
Any suggestions?
P.S...I also have hypothyroidism, and just submitted a blood test to
check it now that I'm 8 wks post pardum with #2.. I almost hope I
need more medicine so that there is a reason that can be fixed.
thansk. Jennifer
Hello everyone it's Teresa from Indiana. My surgery was on 10-25-02
and as of 12-13-02 I was 6 weeks post-op. I started out at 483lb. and
with in 2 day's shy of my 6 weeks I have lost 66lb. I did have some
problums after surgery. 1st thing was on 10-27-02 I was released from
the hospital. Then on 10-30-02 I was having problems with my JP Tube
and it was removed early. That very same day I was sent to the ER and
was admitted for a leak. I was in the hospital for 4 day's w\no food
or water allowed. I had a PTN & IV to help me get undehydrated and
give me the vitamins,Minerals,Protien, and fat I needed since I could
not eat or drink. Then on the 4th day they did a upper GI and there
was no more leak. 2nd thing happened on the following Mon. I could
not eat or drink anything when ever I tried to I would thow it up. So
for the past 5 weeks I have gone in as a outpatient for a EDG Scope.
That's where they knock me out and go down mt throat with a scope and
they use a balloon to streach my Esophagus so my food and drink can
pass through. The Dr. told me this happens to alot of people, and is
caused from where you can only eat liquids for the first 6 weeks. She
told me I could have it streached at least 12-14 times before it will
stop doing this. Other then that I've done pretty good. I don't
regret having the surgery I now have more energy and for the first
time in 7 years I out walked my mother at the mall and now when I go
shopping I don't need to get a mobile cart unless I have walked too
much earlier that day,but that is not that offten. If you or anyone
you know are wondering weather or not to have the surgery all I can
tell you is that it is your body you know what you use to be able to
do that you can't do now and you need to think of your loved ones and
think of how much better your life would be if you didn't have the
extra baggage to carry around every day. But most of all do what you
think is best for you and you only because only you can help yourself
get through what needs to be done mentaley. God Bless, Teresa
OP 10-25-02/ 483/417/goal weight 189-200lb.
I am new to the web site and I have been reading the other post and I
have a few comments and questions. I had my surgery 10/28/02 went for
my 6 week check up on thursday and I have lost 23 lbs. my doctor said
that the expected was 10%-15% and I was at 14% so that is good. But
now I am getting alittle afraid because of the huge wt losses you are
all reporting, or I am just paranoid. My next comment is that I am
not having any problems with any food--I feel guilty that some of you
are, I can tolereate anything (well haven't had fried food). My last
comment is that at about week 3 I started sipping Diet Coke, and have
not had any problems with it. It takes me the entire day to drink one
12 can, thats if I finsh it.
Ok, last thing, I am having trouble eating 6 times a day, so I have
been drinking protein shakes to increase my protein but I would like
to know if anyone has found a really good protein drink/shake? I have
gotten a few different kinds from GNC but wanted some new ideas.
Thanks for listening

First off I want to introduce myself. My name is Donna.
I have recently decided that I wanted to have the surgery. I have not
yet gotten past the want stage yet though. I have a friend who had it
last January and she looks GREAT!
I joined this group a couple of weeks ago and also had my Husband
join too. I have been reading posts and looking at profiles and so
many of you have web pages describing in detail your stages both
preop and postop. It has been very helpful to me and very intresting
as well.
For those of you who had the courage to take such a step, BRAVO!!!
And Bravo to your families for standing by you in your decision and
helping you through.
I have been married just a few short months. I am happier than I have
ever been in my life. My Husband tells me how beautiful I am and
always lets me know how much he loves me. He doesn't think I need the
surgery and says he loves me the way I am. But he will support me in
anything I decide. I tell him I want to look better not only for me
but him as well. I don't think he fully understands that but as I say
he will support me in anything I choose to do.
After the first of the year I am going to seriously start the process
of getting the ball rolling.
Thanks for having such an informative group. It has helped me make my
decison and I feel better about it with each and everyday.
I would appreciate any advice you all may have.
Thanks
Donna
This is an update on my days since surgery. Some of you (this IS a group
message going out to multiple groups and individuals) have asked for
details, so I'll see what I can do. Thanks for your patience...it's been a
long haul. Some of it may have already been said, but I needed to get it all
down on paper anyway, so here goes!
I had surgery on 11/5/02. While doing the surgery, they found I had a small
para-esophageal hernia, which they repaired. There were adhesions and some
scar tissue to work around, but all was completed laparoscopically. The
following day I went for my leak test. They found a small leak and put me
through the CT scanner to check as well. The leak didn't appear to come from
the staple line, but rather along the esophagus, probably related to the
adhesions from the hernia; just a weakened area. An NG tube was placed
(through the nose and into the pouch) to keep any and all fluids out of the
pouch and allow for healing. It was hooked to suction so that not even the
saliva I swallowed would remain in the pouch.
A few days later they tried another leak test with the same results. At that
point, they put in a central IV line and started me on TPN (IV nutrition).
In case I ended up back in surgery, they wanted my nutritional status to be
good. So I was getting LOTS of calories as well as protein, vitamins and
fats. Several days later we tried another leak test and the leak was still
there. They decided to wait a full two weeks before trying again rather than
irritating the pouch anymore. I begged to be sent home and finally got my
way, with suction, IV TPN and antibiotics. I went home the week before
Thanksgiving.
After 5 days at home I woke up with severe pain in my right chest all around
my ribcage. We went to the ER and they found I had a pulmonary embolism
(major clot in my lung) and re-admitted me. This was Tuesday before
Thanksgiving. I was on bedrest for a couple of days and then had a Doppler
ultrasound study of my legs and arms which did not show any clots, so I was
up doing laps around the floor again.
The following Monday I had another leak test and PASSED!! Yippee! I was
started on clears that morning and full liquids the next day. I went home on
Thursday morning (the nurses said to keep away and that they didn't want to
see me again for at least 6 months and then only to see how skinny I was!).
The whole experience was tough, being away from my 4 1/2 year old and
needing to run my business, but it was a learning experience, too. As an RN,
I've never been hospitalized since I was 18 and had my tonsils out (I had my
daughter at home, so was not even in the hospital for childbirth). I had
great care and some wonderful nurses. The doctors that were assigned to the
different aspects of my care were fabulous.
I had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Asbun last Friday and was cleared to
start on more solid foods (very exciting after having nothing by mouth for a
month and then pureed for 2 weeks!).
For you pre-ops with questions, fire away! I'm pretty much caught up on my
loads of email!
Hugs,
Laura

Hi everyone out there. This is my first message to
this group email. I am in the preliminary stages of
going through WLS. The doctors think that I will have
the surgery sometime in March or April. I would like
to hear any stories, hints, or suggestions that anyone
would have for me just starting out in this process.
My husband and I have a lot of questions, and it seems
that the majority of them are unanswered at this time.
Anyhow, I'm 6' tall, I have a BMI of 52, and I've
been overweight for my entire life (since the 5th
grade). I've been on every diet that you can think
of, all to no avail. I have determined to have
surgery as a last resort for getting the weight off.
Like I said, any suggestions that you have, please
send my way! I will be looking forward to hearing
from you all!
Regards,
Carla :)
JENNIFER, I THOUGHT HE WOULD WANT TO KNOW WHAT MY LEVELS WERE. SO
I CALLED MY PRIMARY DOCTOR AND I WILL SEE HER ON MONDAY. I WAS
SUPRISED HE DID NOT ORDER BLOOD WORK. I HAD A BUNCH BEFORE MY
SURGERY. I AM STILL STRUGGLING WITH EATING, AND FEELING WELL. I GET
REALLY TIRED EASY. I ONLY TAKE CENTRUM CHEWABLE. WHAT DO YOU TAKE?
MOE
MY DOCTOR TOLD ME HE WOULD NOT DO BLOOD WORK. ONLY IF I HAD A
PROBLEM. IS THAT NORMAL?? DID ANY OF YOU GET BLOOD WORK AFTER? MOE
Hello, my name is Tiffany and I had the Gastric Bypass surgery on
June 5th 2002. I am 22 years old, and I have alread lost 80 lbs and

the 140 mark. Any suggestions? Also, I was told that I could never
drink soda, or anything with carbination again. Is this true? I miss
my diet cokes!
If anyone has any questions for me don't hesitate to e-mail me or
post messages on the posting board.
