finally home from surgery now need eating advice

2006-08-31 00:38:15

Well friends, my surgery date was October 16th, I finally got out of the hospital on November 3rd. I had so many complications it was a very scary experience, but I am home finally and trying to begin to be on the mend. I am having a lot of problems with what to eat, when and how much, can anyone who is post op give me some idea of what your eating is like on a daily basis? I am worried i am not eating enough, but then sometimes I think I may be eating too much, I just need some help and guidance. Please help..I am glad to be on the other side but right now it is hard to see the shining light.

Hi everyone, I have to admit something, and please, dont flame me I dont like my surgeon. He is not personable, he makes me feel dumb when I talk to him, Im just not really happy with him. I also dont like the diet he has me on. As I talk with others, and hear the diets their surgeons have them on, I feel like there is a much better plan out there for me. So please, dont feel like you are giving me medical advise or anything. But I would really like to hear from everyone,

1- What are you allowed to eat, i.e.: how much, how often, and most important what are you allowed to eat. Briefly explain the diet plan you are on.

2- What type of surgery did you have done. RNY, lap band ect,

3- When was your surgery, and how much weight have you lost?

Thanks everyone, your help will be very much appreciated!!

I AM A NEW MEMBER AND HAVE A QUESTION...

2006-08-30 18:56:34

I am still waiting on my INS approval...but
1. What is the life span of a gastric bypass patient? Do you guys
know of anyone who has had it 20 years ago and is doing fine? I
heard it was 15-20 years. Is this true?
and
2. Is this surgery good for someone who is only 90 pounds
overweight? I cheated by putting on ankle weights on during my
consultation and passed the 100 lb. mark. Will this surgery be safe
for me?
Thank you for your response..

Has anyone had to deal with a less the supportive work environment?
I guess I just don't understand how fellow co-workers whom I also
considered friends can say things like, "Well it's not like you have
to have it done. Yeah you'll be healthier in the long run, but you
don't HAVE to do it." This was said to justify denying my ability to
use short term disability or the Family Medical Leave Act.
I have to be back in 3-4 weeks. The 'or else' was never said, but it

FIRST STAGE OF POST-OP INFORMATION

2006-08-27 23:39:37

Hibernation Syndrome
FIRST STAGE OF POST-OP INFORMATION
After WLS, you may be feeling tired and become depressed. When you are several weeks post op, and are either on a liquid diet or you are eating many fewer calories than you were pre op, this depression and inactivity can become more pronounced.

All you want to do is sleep, you may have crying spells, you may begin to believe that the surgery was a mistake, or you may think 'what in the world have I done to myself?
All these feelings are completely normal and, to a certain extent, are to be expected. The low number of calories you are eating produces what many of us call the 'hibernation syndrome' and your depression and feelings of despair, are a direct result.
During the weeks immediately following surgery, our body starts to notice that we are not taking in enough calories. It doesn't know we've had WLS, or that it's the year 2000. Our body is missing food, thinks this is a famine, and struggles to conserve our energy. The human body reacts like it always has in a famine; it makes us depressed--so we don't have the motivation to do anything, and it makes us tired--so we don't have the energy to do anything. In this way, we will conserve as many calories as possible and remain alive.
You can see the practical value of this as our bodies have been living through famines, snowstorms, and other periods of unstable food supply for centuries.
This stage can last several weeks. Our discomfort is compounded as we are, at this same time, trying to recover from major surgery, adopt new eating habits, and deal with a liquid or soft diet. To get out of this stage, our body has to say to itself 'gee, this famine is lasting a bit too long. If I keep conserving my energy with inactivity, I will starve to death. I'd better use my last store of energy (the remaining fat and muscles in our body) to hunt up some
food'. At this point, our body will switch from getting energy from food, to getting energy from our fat (and muscle too if we don't eat enough protein) and that is what we want.
In order to deal with this difficult transition period, tell yourself that you're right on track; this is exactly what is normal and to be expected.
Tell yourself that, in a few weeks, this will pass, and you will feel like a completely new person. We all seem to turn the corner about 4-6 weeks post op. Then, your mood will lighten and, with your weight loss starting to add up, you'll feel more positive and have a better outlook on life. Just keep telling yourself that you will not always feel this way! You WILL be back to feeling like your old self. Just give it time!

depressed

2006-08-27 07:18:18

Hi everyone,
I will be 2 weeks post-op tomorrow, and I'm dealing
with a lot of feelings. I feel very left out and
alone. I feel like I'm not a part of my family because
I can't eat dinner with them. I feel like a freak, I
want to be able to eat one normal meal! I don't care
what size it is; even one bite of a normal meal would
be great. I have been on solid foods for a week. But
my surgeon does not allow any carbohydrates for the
first year. THERE IS NO MEAL IN THIS WORLD THAT DOES
NOT INCLUDE CARBOHYDRATES!!!!!! I didn't expect this
to be so hard. I feel hungry most of the time, and
when I'm not hungry I'm nauseous. I really doubt if I
did the right thing. I think part of my frustration is
I have not lost anything in the last 6 days!! I lost
almost 30lbs in the first week, but nothing since
then. It is really depressing. I feel like I have
ruined my life for nothing! I know I'm exaggerating,
but this is how I feel. I have had a very hard day.
How long until you felt you had made the right
decision? Did anyone else go thru this? I feel like
I'm going to fail, and will never eat normal again,
but will stay fat, and not lose any weight. I know
most people on this list say they would do it again in
a heartbeat, how soon until you felt that way????

hey, I'll be seeing you all on the Other Side! Best wishes to all

experienced in weight loss surgery, and best of all because he is
just opening his practice, those who are in the stage of looking for

Hi Everyone!
I was just approved Thursday for my surgery. I've asked for a date
in late December or early January (even though they have earlier
ones) because between my PCP suggesting the surgery and getting
approval from my insurance was less than 2 weeks!! Not a very long
time to come to grips with a life changing decision like this one.
My mom is cautiously supportive. 5'7", she has weighed at or near
120lbs her whole life so I don't think she quite understands why I
would want to do something so drastic. My fiance' is extremely
supportive of my decision as long as "you're doing it for you and not
for me. I love you just they way you were, are and will be." Remind
me to get him that riding mower for Valentine's Day. :)
I have a couple of questions I haven't seen answered though.
1. I love swimming. How long until I'm able to swim again? I'm
having open RNY, but I heal pretty quickly. Freak that I am, I love
protein powders and mix them with my Cream of Wheat in the morning.
I hear that getting a good amount of protein will help you heal
faster.
2. I know exercise will also help you heal faster post-op,
especially walking (which I hate, but whatever it takes, y'know?),
but what about pre-op? I have two months at least and I was thinking
if I can get my stomach and pectoral muscles in a least better shape,
that might speed up the healing time.
Sorry for the long message, but I'm kind of nervous about this
especially since it's happening so fast.
Thanks,
Tracy

CREAMED SOUPS, PLUS THEY DO NOT HAVE MUCH PROTEIN. AND ANY ADVISE ON
PROTEIN POWDER, AND WHAT TO USE IT WITH? SHOULD I TRY PEANUT BUTTER,
OR IS IT TOO SOON. I AM AFRAID IT WILL CLOG UP MY STOMACH. I STILL
AM VERY TIGHT IN MY STOMACH BY THE END OF THE DAY. I EAT LESS IN THE

YOU ARE IN PAIN. I SLEEPED IN MY RECLINER FOR THE FIRST WEEK AND A

Hello everyone. I will be having my surgery on December 18th. My
mother had the surgery in April of 2001 and lived with us for a year
afterwards. She has done very well with the procedure and has had a
successful weight loss. Never could I have ever imagined that
someday that I would also need to examine the possibility of having
surgery. I am 36 years old and about 150 pounds overweight. I have
severe sleep apnea, acid reflux, shortness of breath....you know what
Im talking about. I am currently a nursing student and have had
enough with the limitations being overweight have put on me.
Although I currently work in the medical field I am starting to get
the jitters about the surgery. I feel absolutely comfortable with
the surgeon and his staff performing the procedure. I have a
positive outlook and I believe that this type of attitude will allow
my recovery to be a speedy one. Thanks for listening and I look
forward to meeting new friends.

Please help this poor woman by sending this letter! Terrible!

2006-08-24 06:55:03

Please take a moment to read this letter and visit the website- tiff
Hi everyone!
Please take a moment to read this You may have seen
the commercials..
Last Friday, the Oprah show covered a story of a
Nigerian woman, Amina Lawal, who has been sentenced to death by
stoning because she had a baby out of wedlock. She has tried to
appeal the decision but has been unsuccessful, thusfar. The head
of Nigeria disagrees with these stonings but has so far done
nothing--partly because of the fear of not being
re-elected. I should also note that the father of the baby denied
fathering the child and, hence, has escaped any form of punishment.
Amina Lawal's stoning will occur as soon as she is finished
nursing her child. She will be buried up to her neck in dirt and
townsmen
will throw stones at her head until they kill her--which has been
known to take hours.
I send out a plea to all the women receiving this e-mail and to
all the men raised by women to join me and many others to help
prevent this
horrific and inhumane event from occuring.
All you have to do is visit the Oprah website:
http://www.oprah.com <http://www.oprah.com
click on the Amina Lawal pop up screen
or search using Amina's name and you will see a pre-written letter
addressed to the Nigerian Ambassador. Just fill out your information
on the bottom of the
page and send it.
It's as simple as that.
You can even go one step further and forward this e-mail
to your friends so they can be part of the mission to save Amina
Lawal. It's your chance to save one woman's life. We can claim
ignorance when doing nothing to stop vicious atrocities that we
know nothing about from occuring but there is no justification if we
standby and allow these events to take place when we are fully
aware of them.
Thank you very much for reading this....now the ball is in your court.

Hello Group,
I am new here. I am a 30 year old male from Buffalo NY.
I will be having the surgery done in February because the only doc in
Western NY that does this procedure does not accept my current
insurance so I have to switch. That does not go into effect until
February 1. I am doing all the pre-liminary stuff now through my
Primary doc.
I suffer from Sleep Apnea and also have a Neurological
illness that sometimes limits my physical activity. I was on
prednisone (steroid) for over a year and gained 90 lbs. I am tipping
the scales at 400lbs right now.
I look forward to talking to you all and reading up on
your stories and adventures.

post opt nine months update

2006-08-22 05:20:30

Well folks

This is my ninth month update. My blood work was fine the doctor says I have to increase my iron a little. All is well no problems. I am feeling fine. I have lost a total of 120lbs. It is amazing I went from a size 28 in pants to a 10-12. in shirts I went from a 24-26 or 3x to a large\medium or 12-14 depending on the style.

I see my surgeron on January again. I told my pcp that once I am one year out I want him to do a bone densitiy test to be sure I am not loosing calcium from my bones. Which I don't think so but better safe than sorry. I make sure that I take all my daily supplements. I write them down and make sure that they are all crossed off at the end of the day. Don't let me forget Protein daily.

Well folks to all the newbies welcome and the post opts thanks for helping me along in my journey. And God keep you all.

because this sense of helping and conforting each other is unique and
something no other country could ever do!
I lived 3 years in Wellesley, MA, and a couple of years in NY, but my
english is lousy - so forgive me.
I am now between 2 different doctors here in Brazil, choosing between
two surgeries - one with a silicon band, and the other, that costs a
litle more and says it's better for me - without it.
I have been reading through the internet to find out wich is best -
but all the information is so technical!!!
Has anyone any knowlodge on this?
Best regards from Rio,
Golda.

Proof that exercise is the KEY

2006-08-21 08:41:20

A little story for you all...
I eloped and got married on Sept. 3 of this year and my husband and I
gave a celebration party this past Saturday night. Lot's of dancing
and karaoke, which I LOVE!!!
I sat for a total of 2 minutes the whole night, danced my butt of and
sang the rest of the time. I woke up on Sunday, got on the scale and
in one day lost 4.5lbs!!!!!!! Needless to say I was floored. I was
wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I can honestly report
that I have not been faithful in my exercise routine up to this
point. But I was thinking that if I exercised every day, instead of
twice or three times a week, I could be invisible really quickly!!!!

Real hunger VS head hunger

2006-08-21 05:56:17

Hi everyone,
I sent an e-mail out, asking about hunger at less than
a week post-op, and it seems a lot of you think it
could be head hunger, I thought I knew the difference,
but maybe I don't, so let me explain what I'm feeling,
and you can tell me! One to two hours after eating, my
stomach feels very empty. By about 2 hours after
eating, I'm getting pretty bad hunger pains, like
before surgery when I had not eaten all day long. I
don't want to eat, because most of the time I feel
nauseous, but when I finally do eat, the hunger pains
go away. Does this sound like it could be head
hunger??

I'm Hungry!

2006-08-20 14:03:15

Hi everyone, I'm 6 days post op, and recovering from
surgery well. I have a few problems though. The one
I'm most worried about is I'm hungry. I have heard
this is not normal for this stage after surgery. When
I eat I feel full on 2oz of food, but it only lasts
for an hour or so, and then I'm really hungry again. I
have not been eating, and doing everything that I
should. Today I went from clear liquids to more solid
foods, (yogurt cheese, ect) I thought that would help,
but an hour after eating, I'm still hungry. I have
also been getting really bad headaches, and I feel
nauseous a lot of the time. I would like to know how
much of this other people have experienced, and what
(if any) is going to get better with time. Thanks
everyone!
Kami

No one has answered..........

2006-08-20 12:37:13

I asked a question that I am hungry at only 6 days
post-op, an only 2 people wrote back, can I assume
then that I am very weird, and none of the rest of you
have had this problem. It is not head hunger, I have
had that as well, and I know the difference. I am
already on a "full liquid diet" which includes,
yogurt, cheese, cereal (cream of wheat) and tomorrow,
I will start on solids, lunch meat, ect. I'm going to
call my nurse tomorrow, and talk to her about it, but
I would really like imput from all of you. Buy the
way, I have been VERY successful my first week, I have
not been giving into my hunger, and (Assuming my scale
is right) I weighed myself before I left for the
hospital,Monday morning and I was 262lbs, this morning
I weighed again, on the same scale and I am 240lbs!!!
I can not belive I lost 22lbs in the first 6 days, I
am in shock!! I'm going into my Dr. office tomorrow to
weigh, so I will see if that is right, but this is on
a brand new digital scale, so I hope it is right! (the
reason I'm doubting, is my hubby has lost quite a bit
of weight in the last week as well)
Thanks, and PLEASE give me your imput in the hunger
thing!!
Kami

Almost there!

2006-08-20 10:20:29

All I can think of today is the fact that in a little over one week,
after working on it for 8 months, my life will change forever when I
have my gastric bypass on November 5. I've been a mass of emotion,
worried that I'll be sick afterwards, that I won't be able to choke
down enough protein (I hate that powder), that my hair will fall
out. On the plus side, my wonderful 24 year old daughter has already
made plans for the shopping trips we will go on, I've been receiving
encouraging words from family and friends, and my 14 year old son
says, "I'm your Number One Fan, Mom!" How lucky am I? I want, so
much, for this to work, as do (did) we all. Is November 5 my new
birthday? Would you all do it all over again? Is being thin as
wonderful as it looks? I guess I'll find out! Good luck to us all.

What is the deal with co-pays?

2006-08-19 21:23:14

I have been researching a couple of surgeons and they all want to be
paid the co-pay before surgery. In my case, My insurance will only
pay 80% and that sounds good but there is no way that I can come up
with $4600 for the surgery not including the fees for psychological
and other pre-surgical testing. My husband is the only one working
in my home.( we have an autistic son and I physically can not keep up
with inmates anymore).
It is sad that there has to be a price on being (trying to be) healthy
Is this upfront method normal? What is the general price on wls (
specifically lap rny)? Is it more affordable to go out of state?
thanks for your help

Long Term Questions

2006-08-18 20:40:08

Hi everyone!
I am a 44-year-old weighing 250 lbs. and am scheduled for lap RNY
surgery in November. The situation I am in is that my husband is
REALLY worried about the long-term effects of this surgery (did I say
REALLY...REALLY). Can I hear from anyone that has had this type of
surgery more than 1 year ago regarding how the surgery has affected
their eating, like can you eat whatever you want but in drastically
reduced amounts? Have you ever resented having the surgery because
you were not able to participate the same way in special gatherings?
Any other psychological or physical effects of malnourishment or
difficulty adjusting to the new, inescapable eating regime?
I believe I have the resolve to overcome any of these potential
problems, but my husband (who is at a normal weight)is concerned that
after I lose weight and the "glow" of success has faded that I will
have other problems as a result of having WLS.
I want my life back, the one I had when I weighed 125 twenty years
ago. I can't believe how much my life has been restricted by being
overweight. Thanks for listening to my rambling and please let me
know if any of you have advice for me.

A good book to get before (and after) WLS

2006-08-18 20:17:06

If you want to read a good book in order to prepare for WLS, get
Weight Loss Surgery;finding the thin person inside of you, By Barbara
Thompson. I could only find it on AMAZON.com. Its about $26 with
shipping. Really great and informative. It covers much more than I
ever thought it would. It also gives great web sites, etc. Also I
found a recliner very necessary, I think you don't have to get it a
med. supply store, a rent to own place would have them, I think.
Also, after surgery you cannot BEND, LIFT, or TWIST. This means you
wil be unable to wipe yourself. I used a pair of long BBQ tongs (and
threw them away after). A good product is the toilet paper that is
wet. And one of the others mentioned a little pillow. I used a throw
pillow that was kinda hard and I had it with me constantly for the
first month-It's great in the car between you and the seat belt! Good
luck to us all and especially those who are looking forward to WLS!

Stomach Pain when eating Solid food

2006-08-18 09:03:58

HI everyone....
I'm hoping that some one can help me on this, if you can? I have
noticed over the last week that eating solids has been a bit hard for
me. It hurts after I swallow it. Like someone is pushing something
hard into my stomach. When I have liquids, such as juice or soup, ice
pops, and so on, I am fine. I do have an appointment next Tuesday,
because that is the only time my doctor is in the office close to me.
I feel I can wait that long. Anyway, has anyone else had this
experience? I was thinking that maybe it is because I don't eat much
from day to day, if at all or I just have liquids? And maybe my
stomach isn't use to the solids or has shunk back? Is that even
possible? I just thought I would ask, it wouldn't hurt, I don't think
anyway.
Thanks a bunch,
Denise

Did any of you lose any hair after the sugury?? I don't know what I
would do if my hair fell out. And how long were you off of work? I
work in a casino and I walk for my whole 8 hour shift and I don't
know if I would have the energy to do that right after my sugury.

[Gastric_Bypass] Another Question!!!!!

2006-08-16 20:43:08

LOL I have another question....Like I had mentioned before, my husband is having the surgery before me. Ok the thing I am worried about is, the insurance company. We had no problem what so ever getting Marc approved for the surgery, no, if, ands, or buts about it, we saw the doc and then the insurance approved it. But anyway, what my concern is, is do anyone of you think I will have trouble getting approved for the surgery, since my husband is having it?? I was thinking they may be a wait period on it, I don't know. I was suppose to see my surgeon on Oct. 11 but had to cancel the appoint, and really need to call and make another appointment. I will do so after my vacation in 2 weeks. But anyway, has anyone on here gone through the surgery right after their spouse had, and if so did you have any problems with the insurance company?????????????? Thanks again!!!!!.....Tonia & Marc

Hello Everyone... Questions for the Gang

2006-08-16 18:17:25

Hello,
This is my first posting and hopefully not the last. I found this
site a few months ago and have been reading some great things about
everyone. Ever since I decided to consider having the procedure (not
sure which one yet), it's all I think about. I had an appointment at
Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, California for a consultation, but was
too ill to make it. Now I have to wait until January. I am so
dissapointed. I live in Los Angeles, I am 44, 5'4" and weigh 277. I
have recently been diagonsed with Diabetis and I also have had Hep C
for 23 years. So you can see why I am considering this procedure.
It seems my health is starting to worsen.
I had a few questions that I was hoping some of you can answer? 1.
How do you deal with the hungry after the procedure? 2. Do you get
dizzy and weak from eating less?
I tend to get headaches and hunger pains a lot and was wondering if
that goes away?
4. Are any of you seeking any counsling for the psychologic effects
of losing the weight? I have never seen what I look like as an adult
thin, and to be honest that scares me, even though I want it so badly.
3. Also, has anyone had any procedures done in Los Angeles area.
Any Hospitals such as St. John's, Santa Monica Hospital, UCLA or
Cedars Sinai? What was your experience.
I look forward to hearing from you all. Have a wondeful life.
Sincerely, Joni

[Gastric_Bypass] A FEW QUESTIONS!!!!

2006-08-16 10:20:19

Hiya everyone its Tonia from Ga. I have a few questions.....I havent had my surgery yet, its still going to be a while before I do so. Fact being, my husband is going to have his first, then I will go for mine. I weigh close to 300 (OMG cant believe I just admitted that) LOL anyway, the problem with me is im big in my butt, hips, & Legs, I mean yes the rest of me is big too, but must of my weight is the lower part of my body. Now what I am wondering is, when I begin to lose weight from the surgery, am ima look goofy lookin? I mean is like the top of me going to be way smaller then the bottom???? Or will it all kinda even out???? I know im not doing this just for looks, I am mainly doing it for my health, but that was something I was just wondering about. Has anyone had the surgery who was built the same way as myself???? If so I would love to hear from you!!!!

Need help and support

2006-08-15 20:45:31

Hello everyone, here I am, one day, and one wake up before surgery. I'm feeling very depressed today. I didn't want to get out of bed, and I can't stop crying. I can't even pin point why, but I figure it does have something to do with the surgery. I have been very nervous these last few days. Yesterday I went to the hospital for pre registration, and testing, also to pay my money for my surgeons "program". I left feeling more ready for the surgery, so I don't know what is wrong with me today. Has anyone else gone thru this? My hubby is very worried because I couldn't stop crying for about an hour. I also feel it is hard, because I can't show any doubt or fear to anyone besides my husband, because no one else understands why I'm doing this, and they don't think I should, so I feel like it I show any doubt or fear, they will feel the need to talk me out of it. AND I DO HAVE DOUBTS AND FEARS! I still think I'm doing the right thing, (I think) I don't know, this e-mail does not
make much sense, I'm sorry, I'm just having a hard time thinking, and putting my thoughts together, because I don't even know what my thoughts are!! Thanks for reading this

Need some help

2006-08-14 12:14:24

I know this topic is discussed a lot and I have tried some of the remedies I've seen, but I'm hoping someone can suggest something maybe I missed. I seriously am losing all my hair. I'm 4 months post op, down 92 pounds and it is coming out in clumps with no signs of slowing down. It's been doing this for about 2 months now and I am starting to worry I'm going to run out of hair. Has anyone gone bald from this because I'm considering going for the short buzz cut look here soon if I can't figure something out. I've tried zinc but my stomach had a terrible reaction to it so I was told to stop taking the separate zinc. I take my vitamins, what else can I do? I truly need some help as I'm tired of waking up and seeing half of my hair on my pillow. Please send me some suggestions if you could!!!

[Gastric_Bypass] Question

2006-08-14 09:40:32

I go in for my pre-op tests tomorrow morning. My surgery is scheduled for
October 28th. They have decided I will have an open procedure due to a
previous surgery. I am so scared of getting an infection in the hospital. I
have had flesh eating bacteria in the past from group A strep. I am in touch
with others who have had flesh eating bacteria, some of whom have picked up
infections after surgery. I know this is a possibility. I wanted to ask
people who have gone through the open procedure about infection post op. I
also cannot have morphine, is the procedure painful or just uncomfortable?
Did anyone have any pain meds other than opiates?

New here and i need some help

2006-08-12 23:50:59

Hello to all.
I am 30yo female struggling with my weight for most of my life. I
currently have a BMI of 50.1 (297 and 5'4") I have been considering
having gastric bypass surgery (R-N-Y lap.)for the past 2 years. I
have researched and read and researched again and I am totally
convinced that this is the thing for me. After quiting my job in
febuary (physically working in law enforcement being so overweight
was taking its toll on my joints and overall well being). I lost my
insurance and just recently my husband finally got insurance through
his employer. According to his health benefit plan it covers initial
physicals exogenous obesity. What ever that means(lol). We asked
the Human resource department for a list of doctors that are on our
plan. They said any doctor but the plan conflicts with that
statement, by saying to go to a Primary Care Network. It continues to
say that it has Preferred Provider Organization. Sounds typical
right ...wrong My husband company is based in Colorado Springs (a
subsidary of emerson electric). Unfortunately, we live in a rural
town in western North Carolina.
I am having trouble getting started. Finding a surgeon. What steps
to take since I have not had a primary care physcian in almost a
year. If there is anyone that can help me I would greatly appreciated
thank you and I will stop rambling on (lol)

Help

2006-08-12 14:56:46

Can anyone please help me. I really need some advice right now.
Since I made up my mind to have the bypass, I have been consumed by
this fear that somehow it will be taken away from me. I worry that
because I have dreamed for a way to lose weight since I was a little
girl and because I want this sooooooobad, that something will go
wrong and I won't be able to have the surgery. we are enrolling in a
new plan in December and it currently covers the bypass, but my fear
is that they will exclude it for the new years policy or that I will
get denied. part of the problem is waiting so long. I can't even
get in for my consultation until Januart some time. Everyday I am
consumed by this fear and wondering what I will do with myself if I
get denied. I feel like I have no reason to live if i am going to
remain overweight and I can't imagine waking up for the rest of my
life this way. Has anyone else out there had this kind of fear
before getting their approval. If you had, please, I need to hear
from you. I need to know that I am not the only one who feels this
wat while waiting to find out if I am going to get the surgery or
not. Can anyone out there relate?

My 4 month post op update

2006-08-12 05:45:23

Hi all!

Well it's been 4 months and I can hardly believe it! I haven't done any new pictures since my 3 month ones because I don't see a great difference so I am afraid to and really not notice a difference, it's a psychological thing. I'll do some more some day I suppose! My 3 month pictures are so encouraging though that I use those for my inspiration.

Besides my complications that most of you know of I have had a good recovery. As for food, it's starting to get better. I can handle most things besides meat. I still have trouble making sure I chew enough and things get stuck once in a while, but that's ok it's much better then it was the first month post op. I was able to get some meatballs down the other night that stayed down, and ground turkey has gone down. I usually stick to cheese and yogurt and fish for my protein. I still never get as much protein as I should.

My hair loss is getting very substantial to the point that people that haven't seen me in a while are asking about my hair and where it has gone. This is very discouraging to me. I hope it stops soon or I seriously am going to run out of it. My vision is getting worse. Some say it has nothing to do with the surgery, others say it does. I strongly believe it does.

I don't exercise. That is my next goal to accomplish. I used to until I had my complications and then I was told to stop and just have never started again. I would if I had time to go to a gym, but that isn't an option because of my hectic school schedule.

Speaking of school; I can officially fit in every desk in each of my classes!!! Woohooo! This is a huge first for me. I have cleaned out all of the clothes that used to fit and can wear most of them now. I've gone from a size 32 to a 22 and that is starting to be big on me. I wore a 1X sweatshirt this weekend and about fainted when it went on.

The mental part is getting a little easier but not much. I still have head hunger that I must fight every day but it's getting easier once I taught myself that it was ok to eat healthy things often. I'm so used to being yelled at for eating too often, but it was all junk. I only reach for healthy foods now. It's amazing. I never desire fast food, or junk, or candy. I have had 4 pieces of candy since my surgery and each were very small and each left me wondering what I was so excited about all those years when I would eat it. I have weird cravings now for things like salad and pickles and cheese. Non stop cheese, I could eat cheese for hours.

One of the hardest things I'm finding to deal with is just eating with people. My family watches how much I eat and watches me afterwards to see if it stays down and they are fascinated by the no drinking while I eat rule and it drives them nuts. They're weird. It's odd to go to restaurant and not eat anything and not drink anything. The waiters look at me funny but oh well. I think they think I don't like the food. I try and avoid restaurants, it just isn't fun for me anymore. Plus I don't like to be hurried when I eat as it takes me a while. I usually have to take a few "warning" bites and wait for these hiccupish/burpish things to come and then I can eat comfortably and get a few more bites down.

Well anyway, long story short, everything is fine. I'm out doing more things, I'm fitting in more places, I'm wearing better clothes, I feel better about myself. Still have a long way to go to get to where I'd like to be as far as my self esteem, but sure is easier to get there. I was down 82 pounds last time I weighed a few weeks ago so I'm doing good I think.

Anyone with questions please email me as I hardly can check these messages anymore J The3Richardsons@...

Healthily yours,

Julie

Protein

2006-08-12 04:57:08

Hi everyone...I'm less than one month from my surgery date of
November 5! I can't believe it's so soon, especially since I've
been working on this since last March. Of course, I'm getting
nervous, and one of the things I'm worried about is getting enough
protein. I've gone on "crash" diets in the past, and had a problem
with hair loss then, which I don't want to repeat! Does anyone know
of any protein drink that doesn't have that horrible taste? How
about other sources of protein for the first few weeks? Has anyone
used vitamins or minerals with any success? Thanks so much, and
good luck to you all, at whatever stage in this process you are at.

Sorry

It was Sept. 10th - of this year. About five weeks ago.
Sorry 'bout that.

What Chaps Your Hide!

2006-08-11 04:09:09

We are doing a lot here to support & encourage each other. That's
great. But what are we doing to let the outside world know what we are
doing & take a stand for it. It's so important to get our message out
on the benefits of this surgery & do all we can to rid the mindset that
we are either crazy or don't know what we are doing.
So, I'm sending you this email to answer the question - What Chaps Your
Hide? What out there has really bothered you that you've heard either
from people you know or from the media. I'll share a couple of things &
ya'll respond.
1) This may be considered controversial, but really think about this
for a minute. We are on a crusade that research is so vital towards
having this surgery. It's so important that we read up & understand
fully what we are getting into. Even those that don't support us in
this will say that too. But, why in the world can we not do the same
thing when it comes to abortion? Does anyone that goes in for an
abortion really know what they are doing? What the risks are? Do they
know they can become sterile or even bleed to death? These are both
surgical procedures so I don't really see the difference. I'm so glad
I'm in a state (Alabama) that passed the Woman's Right to Know bill into
law. I want to know just as much about the procedure for an abortion as
I do gastric bypass surgery. I think it's only fair.
2) I'm sick & tired of the game the media is playing on us! Have you
seen how often ET is pulling those attention getters? They lure you in
thinking that Carnie is gaining her weight back or Roseanne is having
severe problems due to stomach stapling. Then we see that not of it is
true. Carnie is just fine & Roseanne deliberately ate more than she was
supposed to to be the 170 lbs she is today. I don't think it's right
for the media to use scare tactics just to get viewers to see the story.
This just adds fuel to the fire for the nonsupporters.
Okay.......your turn. Have a great day! kd

Need some friends

2006-08-11 00:12:57

Well Im back from my cruise, very happy and 5 pound heavier!! But we had a BLAST and that is what matters. I went in and met my surgeon for the first time. He was very nice, he spend plenty of time with me, answered all my questions and put my mind at ease. I cant believe how fast time is passing; the 21^st is going to be here before I know it. Sometimes I am really worried, and sometimes I feel calm. Most of my fears are about the actual surgery. Im ready for the live style changes (I think) Im not worried about not being able to eat my favorite food, (or any food at all LOL) Im more worried about surgery complications, and the pain associated with the whole thing. My surgeon told me, as far as my risk, on a scale of 1-10, of the patients he deals with, he would say Im a 1 or a 2. That made me feel good, but still, things could happen. I try not to think about that. I want to give my son the best mommy I can, and I really feel this is the way to do it.

I would really like to find a few friends I have things in common with. Im 25 years old. I have been married to a wonderful loving man for 6 years. I have a very active, fun 2-year-old boy. I love to travel. I have 2 jobs, I work for Jetblue airways as a reservation agent, and I own a salon where I am a cosmetologist. Im having gastric bypass in about 1-½ weeks, I weight 260lbs, and Im 55. I would love to hear from anyone, I really feel like I need some people to talk to one-on-one. This group is wonderful, but I need a little more!
Thanks
Kami

need your help

2006-08-10 13:13:12

Hi! I haven't posted in a while so here is an update. I have Attena
PPO, and they denied me because i didn't have a letter from my
primary care doctor saying that she knew I had tried a diet for at
least 6 months. But when I went to my initial consolation with
Bariatric Treatment Centers, I gave them the letter that my doctor
had written stating that I had tried Weight Watchers, had been
compliant and had not lost weight.(this was from July 2001-March2002
so it was over 6 months)
So then I get a call from BTC insurance department in Michigan (I am
in Ohio) saying Ohio didn't give them the letter, so now I faxed them
a copy. Also they said that I need copies of my medical records from
1997-2002 showing where I have been weighed by a doctor. I got copies
from 1997, but from 1998-2000 my records have been lost because the
doctors office I went to closed, and they sent my records to storage,
and the only one they could find was from 1997 where I weighed 250.(I
weigh 289 now)
My question is should I wait and see if BTC can get me approved now
with this information, Should I send the information to Attena on my
own to be sure that they receive it, should I write Attena a letter
giving them my history, or should I wait and see if I am approved
this time and save the letter if I get denied again? I am sorry that
this is so long, I hope that some of you that have been through this
can help!
Thanks,
Lori

Lisa- I think that you are already wise- and already know what is
good for you- I thought about the banding and went through the same
process as you did and came back to the bypass- there was a recent
death for the banding- it is also neww without the statisticsto
follow- the bypass has been around and they have made alot of
improvements since then - -and I agree like you said - possibly the
premorbid conditions were already a huge risk factor. Annie

Risk Factor Issues

2006-08-08 09:52:08

Good morning everyone,
I am a new member to this group, with my seminar coming up in mid-
December and an anticipated surgery time in March. I was talking to
my manicurist last night and she is having gastric banding in
November, and tried her best to talk me out of considering bypass,
because she said the mortality rate for bypass is 1 in 200. I have
read and researched so much in the past few weeks about gastric
bypass and I told her I felt the choice you made was as personal an
issue as political parties or religion, that there were pros and cons
in both procedures, depending on who you talked to. Still, I haven't
come across anything on mortality rates, and I have a hard time with
accepting 1 in 200. I told her I believed people who did succumb
after any type of surgery for obesity generally had to have major
health complications already which made recovery more challenging,
such as cardiac or diabetes, etc. Would someone please give me some
feedback on this? I am very anxious this early in the decision-
making process, as you can probably tell.
Thank you for your help,
Lisa

I did it! I had my surgery 10/03

2006-08-08 05:21:45

I just want to be added to the list of many people who have decided
to change their life forever and have gastric bypass. I had my
surgery October 3rd, and I'm home now recovering.
I've been reading the messages you guys send each other back and
forth, and I drew alot of support from it. I want to lend my
experience if anyone should be looking for answers or guidance.
Yeah for me!

2006-08-07 17:28:28

Hi this is Tina's daughter. She had her surgery yesterday. I left a message on her profile because I wasnt sure how to do it, but I finally figured it out. The doctor called today and said that her heart rate is up and they are taking her back into the operating room and they are going to open her up again. He said he thinks she may have a leak. Has anyone else experienced this? I just want to know shes going to be ok. Everything else has been fine, and now this. Please any response would be great. Im getting ready to go to the hospital now, and wait for her to get out of the OR. Thank you

insurance question

2006-08-06 12:31:32

I need some advice about my insurance. Our family is currently
covered under my husbands employer. When he first became employed 7
months ago, they offered two plans. We of course took the cheaper
plan. Then I decided to have the bypass done. So I wanted to begin
checking into my insurance to find out if it would be covered before
even going to the doc. I learned from this that for one, my husbands
employer is actually our insurance company as well as employer...they
are self insured. They have another company called spectrum,
administer the plan. This means that we deal with spectrum, but the
policy and terms are all written by the employer and when it comes
time to pay, the employer pays the medical bills. So here's my
concern. We are currently on the cheaper plan that does not cover
the bypass. The policy says it has a written exclusion for obesity
surgery and I hear it's tough to appeal that. However, the other
more expensive plan does cover the bypass as long as it's proven
medically necessary. We have to wait until open enrollment to get on
this new plan that starts Jan. 1st. But here's where I am
concerned. For one, we were never given any type of booklet or
written documentation that outlines our coverage and/or terms of our
policy and we will not be receiving one for the new plan. If I call
spectrum or the employer, they can read directly out of their info
about what is covered and what isn't, but they will not give me my
own copy in writing. They say that they are re-writing the policies
and don't have the book ready yet. But we have been asking about it
for six months. Isn't an insurance company required by law to let
you know what your coverage is and what your paying for in written
documentation. My fear is this. They say the more expensive plan
covers the bypass. Well, we have to go in december to fill out the
paper work to switch plans. What if by Jan 1st when the new policy
takes effect, they have made an addendum to the coverage and it no
longer covers the bypass. What if it covers it in Dec. when we sign
up and then by Jan. 1st they have made changes to the policy. I will
have no written proof that it covered the bypass when we signed up.
They seem to be dragging their feet and I am worried that when we go
in Dec. to fill out paper work, they will tell us again that the book
is not ready and they may even say that the new policy for 2003 is
not even completely finished and they can't tell me what will or will
not be covered for 2003. Does this sound weird to anyone? Whenever
I talk to spectrum, they tell me how this more expensive plan works
and what would be covered in regards to the bypass, but they always
remember to tell me that the info they are giving me is for this year
and things could change for 2003. So if they have open enrollment in
december, do they have to disclose any new changes to their policy at
that time before you sign up. If we sign up with the new plan and
then they announce they no longer cover the bypass, we will be stuck
on this new plan for an entire year paying quite alot of money for
health care coverage we don't need. We are willing to pay that
amount if we get the bypass covered in return, otherwise we would
just stick with the cheaper plan. I was also wondering if I should
keep my desire to have the bypass confidential to my husbands
employer, as they are the insurance company and will be the ones
paying for it. I am afraid if they find out, then they will make
changes to next years policy just so they don't have to pay for it.
BUt if I am keeping it from them, how do I find out if the bypass is
covered for 2003 if I don't get a book. I would have to ask them
directly about the bypass surgery in order to find out, and I am very
uncomfortable with my husbands employer knowing that I am having this
surgery. Does anyone have any experience with their employer being
self insured? Does spectrum have to keep our medical info.
confidential to the employer? I can't imagine that it's okay for
your employer to know all your medical needs simply because they are
also your health insurance company as well. This seems like a huge
conflict of interest to me. I hope that this made at least some
sense. I apologize for the long posting, but I am very worried. I
have wanted to lose weight my whole life and I, like all of you, have
tried everything and feel the bypass is my last hope. I am so afraid
that something will get in my way of having the surgery. Does anyone
have any expertise with health insurance or no anyone I can atleast
talk to about my legal rights in this issue. I am afraid that because
they provide no written documentation, they can make changes whenever
they want and deny claims and we have no way of proving they are
being dishonest because we have no copy of our coverage. I am
probably a little paranoid, but I am just trying to be prepared to
fight!!! thanks for you help

UPDATE!!!!

2006-08-06 04:50:10

Hi everyone! It's me, Melissa. I was so scared that i hadn't lost any
weight but the doctor confirmed--to my amazement-- that I had lost 16
pounds my very first week!!!I can't believe this! I can even see that
my ankles have real bones in them!!! :)

Nausea & tiredness

2006-08-05 12:39:13

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced some of my symptoms.
I had my gastric bypass July 15, 2002. Seem to be okay until the
doctor said I could have some solid foods. The day after I had my
solid food I had severe nausea and stomach spasms. I went to the
hosp. had test ran on my gall bladder and found out it was bad. The
dr. kept me in the hosp. for one week on antibiotics. I went home on
a Friday and came back that same night. I couldn't eat anything or
even keep any fluids down. The next day they took my gall bladder
out. They kept me hydrated by i.v. I went home and still had severe
stomach pain...such as labor pains but worse. I made it thru the
week end but had to go back to the hosp. I was dehydrated and they
ran more test to find another problem. This time my old stomach was
not discarding my bile it was putting it back into my body. I was
kept for another week then sent home. I take protonics, librex &
raglan. These things are suppose to help my stomach get situated.
I still feel some aching in my belly, some tiredness and even some
nausea. I am a big baby with nausea and very scared about it ever
going away. So if anyone knows anything close to my story I would
be so appreciative.
Sincerely,
Nauseated Cheryl

Time is flying!!!

2006-08-05 03:03:14

Ya know guys...4 months ago when I was given the surg date of nov
1st it seemed sooooo far away. As the date approaches, I have a few
days where I question my decision. I also have the "I'll never eat
it again....so I might as well eat it now" syndrome. I find myself
eating the things I would never have allowed myself prior to getting
a surg date. (I've gained 8 pounds since April)
Also, I have yet to tell my family. I really dont know that I
want to. However, if I don't they will never let me forget the fact
that I "left them out" of what was going on in my life. When I do
tell them the days before my surgery will be stress filled. They
have the "just cut down at meals and exercise" mentality.
I could go on and on....thanks for listening.

Hi, My name is Maureen,

I had an open RNY with ring on September 5th. I have lost 30lbs. Gagged a few times but haven't thrown up. I am just starting on pureed food and had my first cottage cheese yesterday. My problems seem to be not with eating but between my ears. Taking care of me has always been my last priority. Now that my kids are grown that's all I have to do is take care of me. The hardest part of this weight loss is the questions about what I like and don't like to eat, wear and what kind of excersize is the least repulsive:). See ya soon, Maureen

Hi All!!
All this talk about food sure makes one hungry, doesn't it?? I sure enjoyed
seeing everyone at last night's meeting. I've been reading all your posts
and it just gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. I love the way you all
keep up with each other and support each other and visit each other. I
almost feel like a Mommy sending my child off to his first day of school.
You just don't know how proud I am of each and every one of you. I also feel
so good in knowing that if, for any reason, I wasn't around anymore (no, I'm
not dying or quitting or leaving or anything - I'm here for the long haul and
that's a fact!!!!) but if I wasn't around anymore the group would still go
on. You've all given it life and a future. I know I say it a
